Top 10 Best Experiences & Things To Do In Normandy France. Attractions & Places To Visit

Destination Review: The Luxe Voyager's exclusive curated listing of the Top 10 Best Experiences & Things To Do as a tourist In Normandy France. With its wild beaches, rolling countryside, romantic chateaux & historical towns, Normandy is one of the most beautiful regions in France. Situated in north-west France, Normandy is famous for its medieval and 20th-century history, Impressionist art, regional cuisine, beautiful landscapes and picturesque towns. What makes Normandy different is its culture, the legacy of William the Conqueror, the historic scars left by the Second World War, its distinctive local cuisine and the rich cultural heritage.

With 350 miles of coastline and beaches, and richly varied landscapes, Normandy gives you a wonderful choice of scenery and culture: the stunning beauty of the cliffs of Etretat, the historic coastline stretching from Caen to Sainte-Mère-Eglise via Arromanches-les-Bains, the River Seine winding between wooded hills and chalk escarpments, the craggy hills of the Suisse Normande, the metropolitan excitement of Rouen and the fields and hedges of Calvados, punctuated with orchards and half-timber houses.

Mont-Saint-Michel and its Bay count among France’s most stunning sights. Enjoy Normandy’s unique blend of maritime traditions and rural way of life. Marvel at its historic towns and buildings, stroll down quiet country lanes, enjoy local dishes in picturesque villages, or sip a drink by the quayside of one of its old ports while fishermen repair their nets and seagulls soar overhead.

9. Pays d'Auge
The Pays d'Auge is an area in Normandy, straddling the départements of Calvados and Orne. The chief town is Lisieux. It is noted for its cheeses, especially Camembert, a place in Pays d'Auge, Livarot and Pont-l'Évêque, also names of villages.

8. D-Day Beaches
The D-Day beaches are the historic site of Operation Overlord, the Allied invasion of western Europe during World War II. A large number of reenactment groups attend, adding pageantry and atmosphere.

7. Deauville and La Cote Fleurie
Deauville is a fashionable seaside resort in the Calvados département of the region of Lower Normandy. 6. Caen
Caen is the capital of Lower Normandy and of Calvados département in northern France and has a population of 115,000. Caen is a college city and thus very active. 5. Rouen Cathedral
Rouen is the capital of the French region of Upper Normandy and situated on the River Seine, approximately 90 minutes drive northwest from the centre of Paris. It is where Joan of Arc was burnt at the stake, but the main reason for visiting is its incredible cathedral that inspired Monet to paint over 30 canvases. Rouen was the home of the author, Gustave Flaubert.

4. Abbaye de Jumieges
Jumièges Abbey was a Benedictine monastery, situated in the commune of Jumièges in the Seine-Maritime département in Normandy. In 654 the abbey was founded on a gift of forested land belonging to the royal fisc presented by Clovis II and his queen, Balthild, to the Frankish nobleman Filibertus, who had been the companion of Saints Ouen and Wandrille at the Merovingian court of Dagobert I.

3. Honfleur
Honfleur is a town surrounding a beautiful little 17th-century harbor in Calvados, Lower Normandy. The town has preserved many historic and traditional buildings and houses some interesting museums, churches and monuments. It is especially known for its old, beautiful picturesque port, characterized by its houses with slate-covered frontages, painted many times by artists, including in particular Gustave Courbet and Claude Monet.

2. Bayeux Tapestry
Bayeux is a small town in northern France within the region of Lower Normandy. Bayeux is best known for the remarkable Bayeux Tapestry that chronicles in visual form the conquest of England by William the Conqueror, Duke of Normandy, in 1066. Scenes include the Channel crossing, the Battle of Hastings (14 October 1066), the death of the Saxon English king Harold and the subsequent coronation of Duke William as King of England.

1. Mont-St-Michel
Mont Saint-Michel is a small UNESCO World Heritage site located on an island just off the coast of the region of Lower Normandy in northern France. The island is best known as the site of the spectacular and well-preserved Norman Benedictine Abbey of St Michel at the peak of the rocky island, surrounded by the winding streets and convoluted architecture of the medieval town.

Northern France: The best places to visit in France outside of Paris

France is the ultimate address for all the great pleasures in life - be it love or food, art or architecture, fashion or culture. No wonder it is one of the most famous holiday destinations in the world. Unfortunately, 95% of France remains largely off the tourist map. Travelling to France usually means a visit to Paris and French Riviera. However, just one hour away from the home of Eiffel Tower lies France's best-kept secret - Northern France. Here's why you should visit it.

For details visit

Visit the Beaches of Normandy // D-Day sites in France

Visiting the beaches of Normandy is easy to do, with some planning.

The beaches, like Utah and Omaha, all feature museums or monuments to the Allied Forces. They're all within a one hour drive of each other on the northern coast of France.

⏱ Video Timeline ⏱
00:01 Intro to Normandy
00:22 Utah Beach
00:39 Omaha Beach monument Les Braves
01:00 Mont Saint Michel
01:15 Etretat
01:34 Driving a rental car in Normandy
01:50 Directions from Paris
02:25 When to visit Normandy

I'd suggest flying to Paris and taking the train up to the city of Caen. From there, you can rent a car from the train station, or use a site like Viator to hire a tour company to do the driving for you.

It's easy driving through the French countryside. Aside from the cities of Caen and Le Havre, you won't encounter any traffic at all!

Many of us have grandparents who fought in World War 2, and I'd always wanted to go visit the sites in France where I knew my grandfather deployed. While he wasn't part of the Normandy invasion, he flew missions over other parts of France which we also drove through.

Granville, Normandy - France 4K Travel Channel

Granville in the Normandy, a climatic spa and seaside resort, lies in the southwest of the peninsula Cotentin. The life of this town was linked with the sea. It does not surprise that a fishing port and a yacht port determine the urban features. In addition you find spacious sandy beaches outside the town.
The name of the town derives from the noble family of Grant, who got their possessions from William the Conqueror. Due to missing male descendants, in 1230, the town was transferred to the Argouges family. There were always close relations between Saint Michel and Granville, since the churches of Saint Michel were built of granite originating from the neighborhood of Granville.
After the Kingdom of England had conquered the complete Normandy, with the exception of Saint Michel, Sir Thomas Scalles build a fortress. The defenders of Saint Michel conquered it and expelled the British from the land once and for all. King Charles VII of France expanded the fortress into a fortified city.
Jews expelled from Spain settled here in 1492. They worked as money lenders and produced gold jewelry. This helped the town to a major upswing. With the emergence of the cod fishery, life linked more strongly with the sea. The city has produced 15 admirals and corsairs.
In the summer month, the beach tourism determines the appearance of the town.
Festival des voiles de travail - Festival of the working sailing ships
During our visit to the idyllic town, a festival of working sailing ships took place in the harbor. Beautiful tall ships and frigates lay at the wharf and could also be visited. Knowledgeable staff explained the different activities on different ships and told of the everyday life of the crews.
A highlight was the 3-master Etoile du Roy (ex Grand Turk). The frigate is a replica of a 47 m long corsaires frigate from the eighteenth century. She was armed with 20 guns. Her home port is the old city wall of Saint Malo.
The festival was accompanied by culinary tastings, lectures and children's programs.
