Day Trip to Marble Falls ???? (FULL EPISODE) S6 E2

THROWBACK EPISODE - This episode originally aired on PBS in October 2014 as part of Season 6. Some of the locations may have changed. Check for the most up-to-date information.

EPISODE FIELD NOTES:
Most know this town as a quaint, laid-back Hill Country berg with one of the most-famous pie joints in all of Texas. While that’s all good and true, there’s another side to this Highland Lakes town -- an adrenaline-pumping adventure hidden just below the surface.

Back in the day, things could get rough. Outside of town there’s a limestone cave known as “Dead Man’s Hole” where outlaws dumped the bodies of Union sympathizers they killed during the Civil War. Legend has it, if you peak inside you might just find a ghosty or two…

If it’s art you’re looking for then look no further. Downtown is full of incredible artwork on every corner, galleries aplenty and lots of places to express your own artsy self. My favorite gallery is the Highland Arts Guild and Gallery full of the works of artists from surrounding counties.

Don’t miss visiting this gallery where Dan and his wife will show you his incredible bronze sculptures of towering horses and men so lifelike, it’s hard to believe he made them out of clay. Dan can take you through the entire process of turning works of clay into lasting metal works of art.

After taking in all the art and adventure, you’re bound to need an afternoon snack, and Blue Bonnet Cafe is the perfect place to grab a slice of oh-so-creamy homemade pie. And if you stop in any day between 3-5 p.m., you will get a slice o’ pie and a drink for $4! They’ve also got the best comfort food around.

Downtown you’ll also find R-Bar & Grill, the Southwest-meets-Mexican grill where they smoke their own fajita meat and pork that’s good on ANYTHING – salads, tacos, your arm… You can get all your Texas faves from Chicken Fried Steak and giant burgers to enchiladas and nachos — and it’s all AMAZING.

Then there’s Double Horn Brewing Company, an amazing brew pub with everything you need to unwind after a long day of trippin’: hoppy beers and hand-crafted food. Everything on their menu is good, but I really recommend the Bison burger topped with bacon, bleu cheese, and buffalo sauce.

JOLLY RODGERS PADDLE CO.
Unfortunately, this attraction has closed since we aired this episode, but you can still hit the lake and you jump in at Lakeside Park or Johnson Park.

For adventure junkies, the next stop should be Hidden Falls Adventure Park, a 2,700 acre outdoor playground with trails for jeeps, dirt bikes and ATVs. If you don’t have your own, don’t worry — they’ll rent you one and set you loose. It is AMAZING.

If you’re looking for something really really CRAZY – contact the folks at Fly Texas who will take you HANG GLIDING above Lake LBJ. You’ll be comfortably pulled up to 2,000+ feet by a boat, and then cut loose so you can soar down for a landing on the water. It’s one of the most incredible things there is to do in the Lone Star State.

Worst RV Campground Ever // (And How we Saved our Weekend!)

***SHADY GROVE CAMPGROUND, DENVER PA***

One of our biggest camping fears came to life this past weekend as we pulled into possibly the worlds worst RV campground. While the spots were tight, the sewer connections were not and we found ourselves in a bad camping situation pretty quickly.

After a confusing run in with some of the seasonal campers, we decided it wasn't worth the stress we had to save our weekend - and in this case we only had one option. To hook our Shadow Cruiser Travel Trailer back up and head home.

Currently holding the record for our shortest camping trip (19 hours between check in and check out) it taught us a lot about vetting campgrounds, when to call it quits, and what red flags to look out for when looking for a place to camp with our travel trailer.

The US State With The Shortest Coastline | America Over The Edge

The state of New Hampshire boasts the shortest saltwater shoreline of any American state, stretching from Maine’s border in the north to Massachusetts in the south. Nearby is the popular Isles of Shoals, a cluster of 9 islands just a few miles off the coast of the mainland, and a vacation destination for locals for the last 130 years, which also happens to be one of the earliest settlements for europeans in the region.

High Shoals Falls | The Best Hikes In Georgia | Best waterfall hikes in Georgia | Hiking Hiawassee

High Shoals Falls and Blue Hole Falls is a great hike right outside of Helen, GA in the Chattahoochee National Forest. The trail is 2.4 miles round trip with two of the most beautiful waterfalls to view at the end of the trail. There are camping areas along the trail. The trail and the waterfalls are all just beautiful. The trail is dog friendly. It is a relatively moderate hike. Our only two precautions are that once on the road to the trail head you have to cross a stream in your vehicle. We crossed it in a Nissan Versa and it was fine but the first time we went to this trail we did not feel comfortable crossing and walked the road to the trail head and that added considerable time to our hike along with the majority of it being straight up. Our second precaution is that there was a bridge to cross the creek but it was damaged by a storm so you will have to walk through the creek to continue on the trail.

Exploring the ABANDONED Redstone Granite Quarry (Conway, NH)

J-MASS INSTAGRAM: @jmassofficial

Join me as I explore the many ruins and remnants of a once thriving granite quarry town in the beautiful White Mountains of New Hampshire: Redstone Granite Quarry, located right in the picturesque town of Conway, New Hampshire! While walking along Redstone Quarry Trail, you will come across many old and abandoned remnants of the granite mining and manufacturing operations that occurred here. Founded in 1884 by the Maine and New Hampshire Granite Company as a company town, the quarry operations continued and prospered well into the early to mid 20th century. The granite that was mined here, known for its distinct pinkish hue, would be used in the construction of many iconic buildings across the east coast of the United States. Eventually, the Redstone Granite Quarry would shut down and cease operations in 1948, leaving behind the many ruins we see today. These old ruins range from rusted machinery and equipment to shuttered shacks and buildings, all deteriorating with time and overtaken by nature. There are also hundreds of unused granite blocks and slabs scattered around the property, alluding to the production of the past.

This was my very first time exploring the historic remnants of the Redstone Granite Quarry, and I absolutely loved it! I am a big fan of history, urban exploration, and nature, and this location captured all three of these interests superbly! To visit each historic ruin, you follow along the scenic Redstone Quarry Trail, located at the base of Rattlesnake Mountain, traversing through the thick, lush forests of the White Mountains. Each specific ruin has a historical marker detailing any and all information about it, allowing you to truly enjoy and understand how the quarry operated. To me, visiting the Redstone Granite Quarry felt like stepping back in time to the late 1800s / early 1900s, as I was able to witness such old machinery that helped shape our society today through building blocks of granite. If you are a nature or history lover who finds themselves up in Conway, or the White Mountains in general, definitely check this place out! If you guys liked this video, make sure to stay tuned for more exploration videos all across New England!

Shout out to GoXplr for their article on the Redstone Granite Quarry: it is incredibly detailed, touching upon the rich history of the location and its significance with urban explorers today. Check out GoXplr's vast array of articles on other abandoned New England locations!

Marble Falls, Texas: A Weekend Trip In The Hill Country

With the loss of Layla, Hubby really wanted me to get out of the house. I needed to free my mind for a little bit. I was a bit nervous about traveling during Covid 19 I must admit. But, we made sure to travel straight through to the hotel. We brought our masks, wipes, air purifier, and cleaners. We also picked a county that had very little Covid cases.

We booked a room at the Marble Falls La Quinta. This was one of the nicer LQ's that we've visited. The pool was made from natural stone, every room had a nice view with a balcony, most of the rooms have small living rooms and wet bars complete with a mini fridge and microwave. All of the staff & customers had on masks. When we arrived I went up to the room and sanitized all surfaces and high touch areas, removed the blanket from the bed & sprayed the bedding then put on our own blanket with the top turned over the sheets, put the remote in a zip lock bag, and turned on our air purifier that I had brought from home. We then left for a few hours to let the purifier get to work. It made me feel safer.

As a vegan it can be tricky finding places to eat out. After some research we found a couple of places:
*Ginger & Spice: Thai food, super helpful staff, many options. We ordered to go. We shared Tofu Soft Spring Rolls, & Fried Tofu with housemade Sweet & Sour Sauce (my fav dish of the trip), I had the Tofu Pineapple Fried Rice, hubby ordered the Pad See Ew with Tofu (I am 100% sure this had fish sauce or something in it - I took one bite and couldn't swallow it.) Next time I'll have just a double order of the Fried Tofu ;)
*Tea Thyme Cafe: Cafe/Diner food, nice staff, very clean, well spaced out tables. We ate inside. Hubby ordered the Classic Breakfast (2 eggs, no meat/sub avo toast, and hash browns) I ordered the Vegan Tacos (hummus, green onions, celery, tomatoes, carrots, cucumbers, sprouts, avocado,) and a side of hash browns with oil not butter - the taco shell was great.
*Double Horn Brewing Company: Nice staff, fast service. We ordered to go. Hubby ordered a burger / sub Beyond Meat Burger patty, Pub Chips (fried pickles), Onion Rings and I just had some fries.
*We brought some food & drinks with us like bread & chik'n salad, avocado, etc - things to make quick and easy meals.

Places we visited:
*Downtown Marble Falls - lots of little shops but everything closes very early. The only place open when we were down there was Ginger & Spice and Ms. Lollipop's Parties, Fun & Gifts. We ate at Ginger & Spice and shopped with Ms. Lollipop. Her store is full of old school candy and games. The landscaping was very nice and colorful. There are beautiful statues on every corner. Harmony Park is in the middle of the square. The park includes contrabass chimes, a xylophone-like merry, two other chimes instruments — a manta ray and a swirl — and lilypad cymbals. (
*Pottery Ranch - It's a huge gift shop. This place has something for everyone. Many one of a kind items, many locally made. We spent about an hour here.
*Falls Creek Park, Lakeside Park, and Johnson Park are all across the river from our hotel. This is a really nice park complete with picnic tables, bbq pits, bathrooms, canoe-launch, 12,000 sf skatepark, public swimming pool, lake swimming access, pavilion rental for up to 400 people, tennis court, basketball, boat ramp, amphitheater, volleyball court, bike & hike trails, and more!!
*Black Rock Park at Lake Buchanan - $5 per person for entry. We spent a few hours here swimming and just relaxing by the lake. It was kinda busy but we found an area where we could social distance. They have small cabins for rent, picnic tables, bbq grills, not many trees so bring a pop up tent if you're planning on camping. Oh yea, and they had those portable AC'd bathrooms!! That was a nice plus.
*Dead Man's Hole -
* Much of what we did was just driving around. It is beautiful. The Highland Lakes of the Texas Hill Country include 7 lakes!!
*We wanted to visit Inks State Park but they were at capacity. Longhorn Caverns State Park was by reservation only. We also tried to visit Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge but it is closed on the weekends.

We can't wait to visit again - next time we hope to visit Inks State Park, Enchanted Rock, and a local observatory. We'd like to rent a cabin and a boat next time.

Beautiful Blue Ridge Fall Foliage - Part 2 - South Mountains State Park Waterfalls

In part 2 of my 5-part series on the beauty of South Mountains State Park in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina, we visit High Shoals Falls, the most accessible of the high waterfalls in the park. High Shoals Falls is about 80 feet, shooting off a granite cliff and plunging into the Hickory Nut Gorge. Be sure to check out the other videos in this series to see awesome fall foliage and many more smaller falls.

Hiking a HIDDEN TRAIL at the Most-Visited Attraction in Georgia | Stone Mountain Park Hiking Trails

Stone Mountain Park is the most-visited attraction in Georgia, and there are a lot of great hiking trails here. My favorite of all the Stone Mountain Park hiking trails is a hidden trail that takes you around the mountain, and most people do not know about it!

When most people come to Stone Mountain Park, they hike the walk-up trail or on the sidewalk near the road, but the Stone Mountain Cherokee Loop Trail has so much to see, including an abandoned chimney and views of the Stone Mountain Lake!

You should hike up, down, and around Stone Mountain as well! Like, save, and share this adventure with your friends!

Marble Falls, Texas

Marble Falls is situated on a chain of seven beautiful lakes, nestled between wildflower-covered hills in the heart of the Texas Hill Country. While the rest of the Texas heats up, Marble Falls is the coolest place to be---from the refreshing waters of Lake LBJ to the relaxing verandas of local wineries.
