Grado - a tourist city in which we feel the atmosphere of Italy the least of all the places we have visited so far. The perfect order prevailing everywhere makes it more reminiscent of Austria than Italy. The hotel itself where we stayed in Grado brings back memories of Austria. Breakfast begins and ends exactly at a specific time, which is unthinkable for Italians.
Grado is referred to as the first Adriatic beach, as it is the first coastal town from Austria. The city was originally an island, with time a narrow, two-way road was built connecting it to the mainland, which allows you to get to it without using a ferry. The ride is a lot of fun, considering the fact that you are driving the high seas. And through the center of the old town, there is an artificial canal, leading to the marina in the very center of Grado.

So, not only breathtaking views but also art pearls such as the elegant and discreet cities of Friuli Venezia Giulia that have traveled the world, listened to different languages, known distant cultures and religions. To understand this, just look at the Audace pier from Piazza dell'Unità d'Italia in Trieste, or walk simultaneously in Italian and Slovenian territory in the Transalpina square of Gorizia. WHAT
Suspended between the land and the sea, Grado has over 1600 years of history.
Along the roads of the ancient Roman castrum, there are the Christian Basilica of Sant’Eufemia and the Basilica of Santa Maria della Grazie.
Enchanting scenery of indisputable beauty and extraordinary natural wealth, the Grado lagoon extends over 90 square kilometres and includes two natural reserves that safeguard its biodiversity.

HOW

Grado, Italy - walking tour
Grado is located in the middle of the northernmost lagoon of the Adriatic Sea, it's an elegant seaside town floating between land and sea.
With it's narrow streets and little squares bordered by picturesque fishermen’s homes, the town is a very unique view.
Grado is known as the island of the sun because its south-facing three kilometres of beaches are never in the shade, and thanks to the area’s macroclimate it is always sunny.
Come with me, first by bike, along the beautiful road that connects the island to the mainland, surrounded by the lagoon, and then by foot, walking around the town, along the promenade and in the old part of the town, with it's characteristic houses and squares.
(It was VERY windy during the bike ride, so sorry if the audio isn't the best!).

Die Stadt Grado liegt an der Nordküste der Adria auf einer Küstendüne am äußeren Ende des Golfs von Venedig. Die Insel wird auch Sonneninsel oder Goldinsel genannt. Sie liegt am Rande der Lagune von Grado.
Grado wurde vermutlich im 2. Jahrhundert v. Chr. gegründet. Der Militärhafen unterstand der römischen Flottenbasis Classis in Ravenna. Schon nach dem Markomannensturm (ca. 180 n. Chr.) wurde ein Castrum angelegt. Zwischen Aquileia und Ravenna bestand ein ganzjähriger Handel, der über die Lagunenkette von Grado, Caorle, Venedig und Comacchio abgewickelt wurde.

Grado is a historic seaside town located on a lagoon island along Italy's north-east Adriatic coast, in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region. The town, which has a population of 9,000, is in the Province of Gorizia and is very near the head of the Adriatic Sea. It is frequently described as a northern relative to Venice; at one time it was the more important of the two towns. Like Venice, Grado was populated as the inhabitants of mainland Roman settlements fled into the lagoons to escape successive invasions. After the sixth-century fall of the Roman city of Aquileia, an important early centre of Christianity, Grado became the seat of the Patriarch or Archbishop who was reponsible for the Adriatic lagoon islands and for Istria. After various fallings-out, including an occasion when the Venetians came here and threw the Patriarch off his palace tower, Grado came under the sway of Venice and the Patriarchs moved to Venice in eleventh century, with the Patriarchate being officially moved four centuries later.
Nowadays Grado is a working fishing port with a lovely historic town centre. It is also, and predominantly, a major tourist resort with miles of highly-equipped sandy beaches. For years this area belonged to the Austro-Hungarian empire, and during that time Grado was developed as a spa resort. The town is still very popular with Austrian visitors. Outside Italy and Austria, Grado is not much known, despite being an attractive historic destination with good transport links. The town is very close to Trieste Airport, and in easy reach of Trieste and Venice. It makes a nice overnight stop on a tour of this part of Italy, a base for visiting the extensive ruins at Aquileia, 6 miles away, or a good holiday destination for a trip which combines sun, sand, sightseeing and archaeology.
Although the little historic centre is pretty, Grado's expansion as a beach resort has obviously had a huge impact on the island's attractiveness. There are large areas of hotels and apartment blocks built in typical ugly modern Italian style, although central areas have had smarter make-overs. Grado is really a compromise between charm and practicality, and all things considered it doesn't really do too badly. Its multiple facets also make it a good compromise as a tourist destination: if your family holiday has to satisfy varied tastes, Grado works well.
