Gmunden (German: [ˈɡmʊndən] (About this soundlisten)) is a town in Upper Austria, Austria in the district of Gmunden. It has 13,204 inhabitants (estimates 2016 [3]). It is much frequented as a health and summer resort, and has a variety of lake, brine, vegetable and pine-cone baths, a hydropathic establishment, inhalation chambers, whey cure, etc. It is also an important centre of the salt industry in Salzkammergut.

Gmünd in Kärnten ist eine Landstadt im Liesertal in Kärnten, benannt nach der Mündung der Malta in die Lieser.
Von der durch das Tal der Drau führenden Römerstraße Via Julia Augusta zweigte bei Seeboden am Millstätter See eine Straße nach Iuvavum, dem heutigen Salzburg, ab und führte vermutlich über das heutige Gmünd nach Moosham (Immurium).
Gmünd entstand etwa im 11. oder 12. Jahrhundert nach Christus als Vorposten der Erzdiözese Salzburg zum Schutz des Katschbergsattels gegen das Kärntner Herzogtum. Vermutlich durch Erzbischof Eberhard von Regensburg gegründet, wurde Gmünd am 21. Dezember 1252 erstmals urkundlich erwähnt. 1346 erhielt Gmünd das Stadtrecht und ist nach Friesach die zweitälteste nachweisbare mittelalterliche Stadt in Kärnten.

Day 8: Ready to explore this must-visit, medieval town, Gmünd. A short hike in the morning up to a Calvary church. Saw the Porsche museum (Porsche’s first passenger cars were produced here in 1944-1950, when Porsche moved operations from Stuttgart to avoid bombings). The museum completely avoided mention of Ferdinand Porsche being a Nazi and using forced labor in his factories, which is disappointing and unacceptable. They have some nice cars on display though. Then went to a metal sculpture garden by artist Fritz Russ. This sculpture garden definitely does justice to Gmünd’s reputation as an art town. Our last stop for the day was Pankratium, a very cool, weird, music, water, and sound museum. Saw a pizza place called Al Pacino's, so of course we had to stop for a slice.

The Blockheide near Gmünd is a protected area in the north-western part of the Lower Austrian district Waldviertel. This landscape offers meadows, mixed wood forests, small lakes and fields and it's famous for very giant granite rocks.

Alte Burg Gmünd in Kärnten
Gmünd in Kärnten is an Austrian municipality of 2 603 inhabitants in the district of Spittal an der Drau, in Carinthia; has the status of city (Stadtgemeinde). In 1868 it incorporated the localities of Reitern and Sankt Nikolai, until then part of the municipality of Rennweg am Katschberg, and in 1872 the territory of the new municipality of Kremsbrücke was separated from its territory, in 1973 it merged with Krems in Kärnten.
Gmünd in Kärnten has a ruined medieval citadel, the Alte Burg (13th century), where some cultural events take place during the summer.
Gmünd owns a small Porsche museum, the Porsche Automuseum Helmut Pfeifhofer, located near the former sawmill where Ferdinand Porsche began building its automobiles after the Second World War. The Porsche headquarters moved later in the Zuffenhausen (Stuttgart) district in 1951.

Nel 1868 ha inglobato le località di Reitern e Sankt Nikolai, fino ad allora parte del comune di Rennweg am Katschberg, e nel 1872 dal suo territorio è stato scorporato quello del nuovo comune di Kremsbrücke, nel 1973 confluito in quello di Krems in Kärnten.
Gmünd in Kärnten possiede una cittadella medievale in rovina, l'Alte Burg (XIII secolo), in cui si celebrano, durante il periodo estivo, alcune manifestazioni culturali.
Gmünd possiede un piccolo museo della Porsche, il Porsche Automuseum Helmut Pfeifhofer, situato nei pressi della ex segheria in cui Ferdinand Porsche iniziò a costruire le sue automobili dopo la seconda guerra mondiale.
