Family vacation trek from London to Brussels and Wallonia -- where we had lived from 1986 to 1989 while attached to the USAF. Entering Belgium via international train through France, we explored Brussel's famed Manneken Pis, Grand Place, St. Hubert Royal Galleries, Mont des Arts compound and the Parc de Bruxelles (with spunky fat cat statues by Philippe Geluck: Le Chat). Of course, we liberally consumed Belgian frites & waffles then plus Belgian beer & chocolates later. Resistance was futile.
Rural home turf was picturesque Dinant (pronounced: Dee-naugh) on the meandering Meuse River. Besides driving to visit our old flat and base, we walked across the saxophone-adorned Charles de Gaulle Bridge, went up into the historic citadels of Dinant and Namur (which featured underground tunnels) and down into alcoholic Caracole Brewery & Tavern of Falmignoul. Before flying out of Brussels South in North Charleroi, we also visited Mr. Sax's House and Givet, France. All possible because of the generosity of our gracious local host and hostess.
Adolphe Sax Tragedy Trivia: At the age of 3, he fell three floors down the stairs, landing at the bottom smacking his head roughly upon the stone floor. That same year he accidentally swallowed a large needle which miraculously passed right through his system without causing any injury. Not long after that he drank a bowl of what he thought was milk, but was actually diluted sulfuric acid, which didn’t kill him for some reason -- nor did another time he accidentally drank a concoction of white lead, copper oxide and arsenic. He also somehow avoided accidental poisoning and asphyxiation from sleeping in a room where varnished furniture was drying. He later fell on a hot stove, badly burning himself and, though escaping a potentially fatal skin infection, was scarred for life. Walking down the street a large slate tile fell off a nearby roof and hit him right on the head, knocking him out and putting him into a coma. After a few unconscious days in bed he awoke and declared, “I’m still alive mom!” At 10, in his father’s musical instrument workshop, a container of gunpowder suddenly exploded and blew him across the room. Soon after young Sax fell into a river, and not being able to swim it seemed that this was it for him, but he got caught on a windmill, which kept him from drifting further downstream. A farmer just happened to pass by finding the boy bobbing about face down in the water and pulling him out just in time. The boy cheated death so many times that he was nicknamed “Little Sax, the Ghost,” and “The Ghost-child from Dinant,” and his own mother would even say, “He is a child cursed by the devil with misfortune, he will not live.”

Vacation In The Ardennes: Givet & Fort La Citadelle De Dinant
First few seconds is a heavy rainshower that we saw coming right at us like a curtain in the distance, it was over in a few minutes. Than a shot of the Chooz Nuclear Power Plant, it supplies power to the region, its smoke can be seen kilometers far away. Than we see the Cathedral of Dinant and the Citadel of Dinant, this citadel has a rich history, from way beyond the 15th century to WWII.

Une situation géographique particulière
Givet constitue le point septentrional ultime de la vallée de la Meuse française, c'est-à-dire le site géographique où le fleuve quitte le territoire français avant de pénétrer en Belgique.

La vallée de la Meuse française se remarque, en effet, sur la carte, par une pointe qui s'avance profondément dans l'Ardenne belge, formant ce qui est appelé communément la « Pointe de Givet » en France et la « Botte de Givet » en Belgique. Une réserve naturelle de 354 hectares y a été aménagée, la Réserve naturelle nationale de la pointe de Givet, qui est la deuxième plus vaste de la région Champagne-Ardenne.
Cette situation particulière résulte des faits de l'Histoire, issus des conquêtes et des traités de Louis XIV dont l'ambition était de conserver à tout prix la vallée de la Meuse dans le royaume de France aux dépens des Pays-Bas espagnols et de la principauté de Liège. Givet se retrouve ainsi en plein milieu de la Calestienne belge.
Par ailleurs, c'est à Givet que conflue avec la Meuse la rivière Houille, petit affluent de rive droite de 25 km dont le lieu de source est en Belgique, dans la région de Gedinne (province de Namur).
En géologie, elle constitue le stratotype d'un étage du dévonien moyen, le givétien. Ce niveau fournit un calcaire bleu typique dans l'architecture des maisons de l'Avesnois, de la Thiérache belge et de la Fagne.
Une position de carrefour géographique
Située dans la large vallée de la Meuse qui est une des artères fluviales maîtresses en Europe du Nord-Ouest, Givet tire un grand avantage de sa position de carrefour géographique aussi bien par voie terrestre que par la voie d'eau.
Dans la partie française, Givet est située au nord de Revin et de Fumay, villes situées en amont sur le cours de la Meuse et appartenant au département des Ardennes. La RD 988 qui relie ces différentes villes le long de la Meuse est l'axe routier principal du département jusqu'à la frontière avec la Belgique.
La porte de France et le fort de Charlemont, à Givet, vus depuis la voie verte.
De plus, la ville est traversée par la voie verte Trans-Ardennes qui, en longeant la vallée de la Meuse, la relie jusqu'à Montcy-Notre-Dame, aux portes de Charleville-Mézières. À Givet, la voie verte commence à côté du square Albert-Ier, sur la rive droite de la Meuse. Il existe une jonction au nord de Givet vers le réseau RAVeL belge.
Par rapport à la Belgique où Givet est ville-frontalière, celle-ci est située à 16 km au sud de Dinant, cité également arrosée par la Meuse et célèbre pour ses dinanderies, et de part et d'autre de la large vallée de la Meuse, Givet est située à 10 km à l'ouest de Beauraing et à 23 km à l'est de Philippeville, toutes ces villes belges relèvent de la province de Namur.
Un site urbain escarpé dans la large vallée de la Meuse
Givet est située sur les deux rives de la Meuse dont la large vallée est dominée sur la rive gauche en amont de la ville, par un promontoire escarpé qui porte l'imposant fort de Charlemont. En face, sur la rive droite, le Mont d'Haurs est couronné par une vieille tour, la tour Grégoire, et des restes de fortifications. Le quartier principal, appelé le Grand-Givet ou Givet Saint-Hilaire est la vieille ville qui s'étend sur la rive gauche de la Meuse, entre le fleuve et le chemin de fer. Sur la rive droite, au confluent d'une petite rivière ardennaise, la Houille, se trouve le Petit-Givet ou Givet Notre-Dame.

Ainsi, son histoire se découvre-t-elle en flânant dans les rues « en demi-cercle » du « Vieux Givet » dont les sites et monuments les plus représentatifs sont les suivants :
l'église Saint-Hilaire et ses boiseries Louis XV,
l'église Notre-Dame et ses nombreux objets classés,
la forge Toussaint,
la tour Victoire et ses expositions permanentes,
la tour Grégoire et son imprenable point de vue,
le Centre européen des métiers d'art, fondé en 1989, où de nombreuses œuvres d'artisans ainsi qu'une cave de produits du terroir sont à découvrir,
le couvent des Récollectines, réhabilité en centre culturel « bibliothèque - médiathèque »,
l'ancien manège militaire transformé en espace de spectacles et cinéma,
le fort de Charlemont et sa pointe est, illuminée en soirée, etc.
Suite aux inondations de 1995 qui inondèrent des rues un important chantier a été lancé avec l'édification de nouveaux quais rehaussable par des planches mobiles, la rénovation du port et un nouveau barrage à caissons.

Dear Diary, these last days we've been cruising around in the Ardennes (Ardennen) we decided to go by car so we could take our time if we found a nice spot to explore. we started of in France after words we went to Belgium en end it our trip in Germany. We loved the nature walks and castles. It felt like being in a movie when you see the Castle Eltz in the middle of nowhere beautiful breathtaking!.
We also went to the High fens witch was beautiful there was as a long path that u could follow and just enjoy nature. TIP don't go in the grass you don't really notice it form the videos but there is water underneath and frogs en other animals.
Next day we drove to Germany and reached De la Hoegne it was a beautiful park a river passed by it and very peaceful place to be.

European Tour 2023
This video covers Part 1 of a European tour from 30th June until 16th July 2023. The video serves as a memory and/or hopefully assist others wishing to travel to Europe, either as a first trip or as n insight as to locations to travel to.
The planning of the trip started in late 2022, after returning from a similar trip, however this one was to cover the Italian Dolomites. The trip was to be mainly a camping affair with a base accommodation for the period in the Dolomites.
Alas this was not to happen as there was a low pressure weather front travelling over our planned locations in Europe.
As such we headed to the French destination of Givet, Dijon, La -Camping Moto, Mt Ventoux, which are covered in this video.
Part 2, will contain events from, the journey to/and at Castellane, Verdon Gorge, Monaco, Bourg St Maurice and Petit St Bernard(video length being a factor).

Fumay, une jolie petite ville du nord de la France à la frontière belge, située sur la Meuse. Ma visite le 25 octobre 2019. La troisième fois de ma vie, je pense. J'étais le matin de ce jour-là à Rocroi, et je me rendis ensuite à Fumay. Voir aussi ma vidéo sur Rocroi!
Fumay, een leuk oud stadje aan de Maas in Noord Frankrijk, dichtbij de Belgische grens. Ik bezocht het voor de derde keer in mijn leven, denk ik, op de middag van 25 oktober 2019, nadat ik die morgen al in Rocroi was geweest. Van die plaats heb ik eerder al een filmpje gemaakt. Voor de verandering maakte ik de reis per auto, niet per trein, want Rocroi is onbereikbaar met het openbaar vervoer.
Fumay, mein Spaziergang am 25. Oktober 2019. Eine schöne kleine Stadt im Norden Frankreichs an der belgischen Grenze und der Maas. Ich war zum dritten Mal in meinem Leben dort, denke ich. An diesem Tag war ich zuerst in Rocroi. Schauen Sie auch mein Video über diesen Ort an!
Fumay, mitt besök den 25 oktober 2019. Den tredje gången i mitt liv, att jag var där, jag tror. En vacker liten stad i Frankrike nära den belgiska gränsen, vid floden Maas. Jag åkte först till Rocroi den dagen och var i Fumay på eftermiddagen. Se också min video om Rocroi!

Frankrijk, Rondreis door Normandië
We hebben dit keer een rondreis van 11 dagen door Normandië gemaakt. Vanuit Nederland rijden we naar de Opaalkust waar we in Boulogne-sur-Mer overnachten. Op dag 2 rijden we Normandië in en stoppen in Le Tréport, Varengeville-sur-Mer, Veules-les-Roses en overnachten in Saint-Valéry-en-Caux. Dag 3 gaat naar Fécamp (Paleis Bénédictine), Etretat ( voor mensen moeilijk ter been, rollator, rolstoel is er weinig te zien. Alle wegen omhoog zijn afgesloten voor verkeer) en Honfleur waar we ook overnachten. Dag 4 bezoeken we Pont l’Évêque, Deauville, Dives-sur-Mer (Village d'Art Guillaume-le-Conquérant), Beuvron-en-Auge en overnachten in Asnelles (3 nachten). Dag 5 gaan we een aantal D-Day locaties in Normandië bezoeken. Dag 6 is voor mij een relax dag. Dag 7 rijden we vanaf de kust richting Normandisch Zwitserland en Perche. Wij rijden een prachtige route en bezoeken Domfront, Bagnoles-de-l’Orne en overnachten in Alençon. Dag 8 gaan we eerst naar La Perrière en dan weer omhoog naar Le Bec-Hellouin. Bezoek nog even Bonsecours vlak naast Rouen waar we overnachten. Dag 9 blijven we in Rouen. Dag 10 gaan we verder naar Chateau de Martainville, Lyons-la-Forêt en overnachten in Montreuil sur Mer. Dag 11 De rondreis zit erop. We hebben veel gezien nu nog het stuk naar Nederland rijden.(2022)
This time we made an 11-day tour of Normandy. From the Netherlands we drive to the Opal Coast where we spend the night in Boulogne-sur-Mer. On day 2 we drive into Normandy and stop in Le Tréport, Varengeville-sur-Mer, Veules-les-Roses and spend the night in Saint-Valéry-en-Caux. All roads up are closed to traffic) and Honfleur where we also spend the night. Day 5 we will visit a number of D-Day locations in Normandy. Day 6 is a relaxing day for me. Day 7 we drive from the coast towards Normandy Switzerland and Perche. We drive a beautiful route and visit Domfront, Bagnoles-de-l'Orne and spend the night in Alençon. Day 8 we first go to La Perrière and then up again to Le Bec-Hellouin. Visit Bonsecours right next to Rouen where we spend the night. Day 9 we stay in Rouen. Day 10 we continue to Chateau de Martainville, Lyons-la-Forêt and overnight in Montreuil sur Mer. Day 11 The tour is over. We have seen a lot now that we still have to drive the part to the Netherlands.
