Revisiting The Gifford Pinchot National Forest - Kayaking Solo Adventure | Conquest Overland
It’s been a couple years since I’ve spent time in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest though for this weekend the goal was simple, get the kayak out on the water and find a relaxing camp. The weather was certainly a factor on this trip with heavy rain overnight but also a stunning sunset overlooking a lake and Mount Adams. Ride along on this quick weekend adventure retracing previously explored trails while embracing new opportunities!

my new favorite | CAPITOL REEF NATIONAL PARK | NP #6 of 63
Watch us explore one of the most underrated National Parks! Capitol Reef surprised us all with its sandstone canyons, 1000s of fruit trees, and fresh baked pies that are absolutely delicious. Join me and the Ikes Hikes team as we take on my new favorite park :)
Established in 1971, Capitol Reef is located in a remote part of Southern Utah. The closest city is Torrey, and they have a couple nice coffee shops and gas stations there. The park itself was breathtaking! We asked the Park Ranger which trails he recommended, so with only one day to explore, we chose the best bang for our buck: Cohab Canyon and Hickman Bridge trails. We refueled with fresh baked pie and oranges before hitting the trailhead that was right next to the Fruita campground. This area was incredibly peaceful and ~chill~
If you are traveling to Capitol Reef National Park I would recommend spending 2-3 days here, instead of 24 hours like we did. It is right in the middle of the BIG 5 parks in Utah, so you will likely drive past it if in the area. Between the Cohab Canyon, Hickman Bridge, Fruita, Gifford House, and the scenic drive - we had a great time here and I will DEFINITELY be back!

First, we check out the Trail of Two Forests Interpretive site, then the massive rapids of the Lewis River, have some lunch, experience Curly Creek Falls for the first time, play in the snow at McClellan Overlook and then ending the day with some tasty brews at the Cougar Bar & Grill. Gifford Pinchot State Park Campground (PA) is a very large facility with 339 campsites at the southern end of the Pinchot Lake. Several campsite are located right on the shoreline. Cottages, cabins and yurts are also available for rent. Each campsite also has a table, fire ring and grill. Electric hookups are also available.
Hiking near Mount St. Helens | June Lake and June Lake Falls | Gifford Pinchot National Forest |
June Lake is one of Mt. Saint Helens barrier lakes, where 2,000 years ago pyroclastic flows dammed one of the eastern tributaries of Swift Creek. The lake became further silted up by airborne debris from the 1980 eruption. A 40-foot waterfall plunges on the far side of the lake.
