Greensboro, North Carolina is the third largest city in North Carolina behind Charlotte and Raleigh. Formerly known as Greensborough , Greensboro is the 68th most populous city in the United States. This county seat for Guilford County has a population of a little less than 300,000 based on the 2018 census ( 294,772).
After the Revolutionary War, the city of Greensboro was named after Major General Nathanael Greene, who was commander of the rebel American forces at the Battle of Guilford Court House on March 15, 1781. The name for the city was spelled Greensborough when the City was established in 1808 and until 1895 - when the spelling was changed to the spelling today.
