The City of Jamestown St Helena - to Live, Work & Explore

Jamestown is the capital of St Helena Island, a British Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic Ocean.

The island is tiny and very remote, it’s most notable claim to fame is that French Emperor, Napoleon Bonaparte was exiled here in 1815, where he died 6 years later.
Until recently St Helena was only accessible by ship, however, St Helena Airport began scheduled flights in 2017 and now weekly flights to Johannesburg, South Africa, keep the island connected with the outside world.

For anyone considering living or taking up a job opportunity on St Helena, this short film gives some insight to what you can expect to find in the island's capital, Jamestown.
Sampling the prestigious St Helena coffee, night swimming at the Jamestown pool, noisy street parades to celebrate the national day and spotting the colourful fish in the Castle Gardens fountain, are some of the activities to experience.
This video about Jamestown also includes shopping for groceries along Main Street, catching a taxi, climbing Jacob's Ladder and target shooting at the Jamestown Rifle Club, plus lots more!
We also include an overview of Jamestown’s history and how it came to be a city.
Filmed & produced in early 2023

St Helena and Its Man of Destiny - 1936

The remote island of St. Helena, a British possession located in the south Atlantic, is perhaps best known as where Napoleon Bonaparte was exiled/imprisoned for the final six years of his life and where he died in 1821. His legacy on the island remains today, despite his body being disinterred and moved back to France in 1840. His home was at Longwood, one area of the island now ceded to the French in respect of its former resident. The island was discovered and named by the Portuguese in 1502. Until the British took over, many other European countries had or wanted possession of the island because of its location along natural trade routes. Jamestown is the island's only port, named after King James. With 4,000 inhabitants, St. Helena is self supporting, growing primarily potatoes and flax. However, its primary economic generator is the sale of the rare St. Helena postage stamp. For fun, the adventurous of the island slide down the banisters of the 700 step stairwell on Ladder Hill. This activity is called rail sliding. A British fort is located at the top of the hill.

Ascension Island - Ep. 26

We make a mid-Atlantic stop at Ascension Island and it was well worth it. An interesting island with a moon-like appearance and a variety of people; short term and long term but all come from somewhere else. I meet some traveling nurses who take me on a hike over a huge old lava flow to some tide pools with shrimp that aren't found any other place on earth. We visit the aptly named Green Mountain and learn that it wasn't always green. We stop at the abandoned NASA station and spend Thanksgiving on the beach.

If You're Foreign Don't Walk The Streets Here ???????? (#105)

If you're one of the rare souls who decides to take a trip to Guyana, the least visited country in the Americas, chances are your first stop will be Georgetown, the capital city. With a population of only around 200,000, it looks and feels almost like a small town. But this city is no joke. With the newfound oil wealth driving prices up, crime is starting to skyrocket. Although everyone in Guyana suffers from theft, American oil workers and Chinese merchants in particular are hunted in the streets by muggers. I was no oil worker, but I was assumed to be one.

Ascension Island views from Western coast in 1984

#AscensionIsland #SouthAtlantic #Island

Tour of Ascension Island taken in 1984 whilst I was working on the Maersk Ascension - which can be seen in parts of the film - anchored in Clarence Bay just over 1 mile off Georgetown, the Capital on the West Coast. Other features which can be seen are - the centre of the island looking towards Two Boats Village; Traveller's Hill; BBC World Service Atlantic Relay Station; US Air Base; RAF Wideawake Airfield; Sisters Mountain; Georgetown; Long Beach; Fort Bedford a two-gun shore battery at Cross Hill, above Georgetown. The battery remains largely intact to this day, together with its guns, BL 5.5 inch Mark I naval guns removed from HMS Hood during a refit in Malta in 1938. A cricket match taking place between the Church and the Exiles Club in Georgetown; Football match taking place on the football pitch near to Long Beach; The world's worst Golf Course which I had the pleasure of playing on - and there weren't greens but browns (smooth sand).
Various ships can be seen at anchor including Maersk Ascension and SS Uganda. Those with a keen eye will notice the Sea Rider heading towards Georgetown from the Maersk Ascension. A couple of Wessex Helicopters from RN 845 Squadron are seen flying near Long Beach.

The Maersk Ascension arrived at Ascension Island in 1983 and remained until 1999 on a MoD charter.

The film was originally filmed using a Super 8mm Cine Camera and digitally converted using a Winait Film Scanner.

Ascension Island is part of the British Overseas Territory of St Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha under the sovereignty of the British Crown. The territory is presided over by a Governor, who is resident on St Helena, appointed by HM the Queen. The Governor is represented on Ascension by the Administrator.

Ascension, like the United Kingdom’s other Overseas Territories and the Crown Territories, is not part of the United Kingdom. It has its own Constitution (shared with St Helena and Tristan da Cunha), is internally self-governing, makes its own laws and as a separate fiscal jurisdiction, has tax raising powers through the Governor. The United Kingdom is responsible for defence, international relations and internal security.
Ascension Island lies in the South Atlantic (7 56’S, 14 22’W) 800 miles northwest of the island of Saint Helena and covers an area of 34 square miles. The climate is sub-tropical with temperatures ranging from 20-31°C. Showers occur throughout the year with slightly heavier rains in the January-April period. The island is volcanic, and its lower slopes and western side are made up of volcanic ash with little vegetation. Green Mountain, which rises to a height of 2,818 feet at the centre of the island, is lush and green. Despite its small size there is a lot to do on the island.

There is no indigenous or permanent population. The inhabitants of the island comprise the employees and families of the organisations working on the island.

Ascension Island is a volcanic island in the equatorial waters of the South Atlantic Ocean,

Ascension Island is an isolated volcanic island in the equatorial waters of the South Atlantic Ocean, around 1,600 kilometres (1,000 mi) from the coast of Africa and 2,250 kilometres

147 (1,400 mi) from the coast of Brazil, which is roughly midway between the horn of South America and Africa. It is governed as part of the British Overseas Territory of Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha,[2] of which the main island, Saint Helena, is around 1,300 kilometres (800 mi) to the southeast. The territory also includes the sparsely populated Tristan da Cunha archipelago, some 3,730 kilometres (2,300 mi) to the south, about halfway to the Antarctic Circle.
The island is named after the day of its recorded discovery, Ascension Day. It played a role as an important safe haven and coaling station to mariners and for commercial airliners during the days of international air travel by flying boats. During World War II it was an important naval and air station, especially providing antisubmarine warfare bases in the Battle of the Atlantic.[3] Ascension Island was garrisoned by the British Admiralty from 22 October 1815 to 1922.
The island is the location of RAF Ascension Island, which is a Royal Air Force station with a United States Air Force presence, a European Space Agency rocket tracking station, an Anglo-American signals intelligence facility and the BBC World Service Atlantic Relay Station. The island was used extensively by the British military during the Falklands War. Ascension Island hosts one of four ground antennas (others are on Kwajalein Island, Diego Garcia, and Cape Canaveral) that assist in the operation of the Global Positioning System (GPS) navigational system. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the United States Air Force operate a Meter Class Autonomous Telescope (MCAT) on Ascension Island for tracking orbital debris, which is potentially hazardous to operating spacecraft and astronauts, at a facility called the John Africano NASA/AFRL Orbital Debris Observatory.Beautiful places to travel to game :
