'Paanod sa Ilog' in Minalungao
('Riding' the Peñaranda River)
General Tinio, Nueva Ecija | Philippines
DECEMBER 3, 2017—When we went to visit Minalungao National Park, we had certain expectations. We expected to see and marvel at the emerald-green water and take dozens and dozens of Instagram-worthy photos of the famous floating picnics on raft on the river with the whitewashed limestone cliffs on either side as back drop. We also expected to spend a lazy and relaxed afternoon on a raft.
Unfortunately, nature does not always cooperate. Unfortunately for us, it had been raining in the Sierra Madre mountains upstream of Penaranda River days prior to our visit.
So the reality we arrived at in Minalungao National Park are nowhere near what we've expected. With the water too murky, and the current too strong, it was not going to be a lazy and relaxed afternoon for us. No picnic on a raft. No instagram-worthy photos of the emerald-green water (although the limestone cliffs were of course still ivory white).
As always, we accept whatever cards nature decide to deal us and make the best of it. Too strong water current? No problem. We'll ride the river instead!
This is a stitching of the live action video footages we took when we rode the Peñaranda River NOT ONCE BUT TWICE! We were thrilled, literally! We can do that over and over again if we had time.
So come ride along with us and enjoy the ride.
Oh btw, some important notes:
1) Because our video footages were taken using handheld action cameras while floating on strong current, they are quite shaky. Watching the video may cause dizziness and/or discomfort. Viewer discretion is advised.
2) If you plan to do this activity (riding the river, that is) on your visit to Minalungao, take note that you can rent the life vests on site. That's what we did. But the torpedos you see in the video are ours. We brought them with us during our visit. If you have a torpedo, I highly recommend you bring and use it, especially if you are doing the activity with kids.

May 2021 ride with some members of LRC Manila. This is the greenest river I've ever seen! Our tour was cut short by the police who asked everyone to vacate the premises of the National Park. Nevertheless, we were able to enjoy the water and the view. Matagal ko nang gustong pumunta dito pero ngayon lang nakahanap ng masasamahan. Sulit!

HOW TO GET THERE:
- Ride a Five Star or Baliwag Transit bus in Cubao going to Cabanatuan. Ask the bus conductor to drop you in Gapan City. Nearest landmarks are Gapan City Puregold or SM Savemore. Fare is Php 163. Travel time is 3 - 4 hrs.
- From Gapan City Puregold, ride a Tricycle going to Minalungao National Park. Fare is around Php600 (4 pax). If you're a group of more than 10, you can rent a jeepney their going to Minalungao National Park (Php 1,000 roundtrip). Travel time is 1 hr.

Bamboo raft rental - Php 800 for 4hrs
Zipline - 100/head (one way) & 200/head (two way)
1,000 Steps to Cross - No fee
Cave Tour - Rent a tour guide in the entrance (no idea with the rate as we haven't tried it).

Hidden Paradise, MINALUNGAO NATIONAL PARK
Minalungao National Park is one of the ecotourism destinations in the Philippines. Located in General Tinio, Nueva Ecija, Minalungao features natural rock formation that serves as the walls of the river whice goes as high as 16 meters. You can enjoy the scenic view while you cruise the river on a bamboo raft (balsa), ride a zipline, take a dip in the water or try cliff diving to make it more fun.
