IZMIR - İzmir - Turkey (4K)

IZMIR, Turkey.

İzmir is a metropolitan city in the western extremity of Anatolia. It is the third most populous city in Turkey, after Istanbul and Ankara; and the second largest urban agglomeration on the Aegean Sea after Athens. In 2019, the city of İzmir had a population of 2,972,900, while İzmir Province had a total population of 4,367,251. İzmir's metropolitan area extends along the outlying waters of the Gulf of İzmir and inland to the north across the Gediz River Delta; to the east along an alluvial plain created by several small streams; and to slightly more rugged terrain in the south.
İzmir has more than 3,000 years of recorded urban history, and up to 8,500 years of history as a human settlement since the Neolithic period. In classical antiquity the city was known as Smyrna (/ˈsmɜːrnə/ SMUR-nə; Greek: Σμύρνη, romanized: Smýrni/Smýrnē) – a name which remained in use in English and various other languages until around 1930, when government efforts led the original Greek name to be gradually phased out internationally in favor of its Turkish counterpart İzmir. Lying on an advantageous location at the head of a gulf running down in a deep indentation, midway along the western Anatolian coast, İzmir has been one of the principal mercantile cities of the Mediterranean Sea for much of its history. It hosted the Mediterranean Games in 1971 and the World University Games (Universiade) in 2005. The city participated in Climathon in 2019. The city of İzmir is composed of several metropolitan districts. Of these, the district of Konak corresponds to historical İzmir, with this district's area having constituted the city's central İzmir Municipality (Turkish: İzmir Belediyesi) until 1984. With the formation of the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality (Turkish: İzmir Büyükşehir Belediyesi), the city of İzmir at first grouped together its eleven (initially nine) urban districts – namely Balçova, Bayraklı, Bornova, Buca, Çiğli, Gaziemir, Güzelbahçe, Karabağlar, Karşıyaka, Konak, and Narlıdere – and later consolidated them with an additional nine of the province's districts outside the city proper. In 2013, the passing of Act 6360 established all thirty of İzmir Province's districts as part of İzmir's metropolitan area

İzmir is a city in the western extremity of Anatolia and the third most populous city in Turkey, after Istanbul and Ankara.[1][2] İzmir's metropolitan area extends along the outlying waters of the Gulf of İzmir and inland to the north across Gediz River's of delta, to the east along an alluvial plain created by several small streams and to a slightly more rugged terrain in the south. The ancient city was known as Smyrna (Greek: Σμύρνη Smyrni), and the city was generally referred to as Smyrna in English, until the Turkish Postal Service Law of 28 March 1930 made İzmir the internationally recognized name.

The city of İzmir is composed of several metropolitan districts. Of these, Konak district corresponds to historical İzmir, this district's area having constituted the İzmir Municipality (Turkish: İzmir Belediyesi) area until 1984, Konak until then having been a name for a central neighborhood around Konak Square, still the core of the city. With the constitution of the Greater İzmir Metropolitan Municipality (Turkish: İzmir Büyükşehir Belediyesi), the city of İzmir became a compound bringing together initially nine, and more recently eleven metropolitan districts, namely Balçova, Bayraklı, Bornova, Buca, Çiğli, Gaziemir, Güzelbahçe, Karabağlar, Karşıyaka, Konak and Narlıdere. Almost all of these settlements are former district centers or neighborhoods which stood on their own, with their own distinct features and temperament. In an ongoing processus, the Mayor of İzmir was also vested with authority over the areas of additional districts reaching from Bergama in the north to Selçuk in the south, bringing the number of districts to be considered as being part of İzmir to twenty-one under the new arrangements, two of these having been administratively included in İzmir only partially.

In 2014, İzmir had a population of 2,847,691, while İzmir Province had a total of 4,113,072.

Historical Aqueduct || Anatolian Leo - Turkey / Kütahya / Eskigediz

Anatolian Leo
Abstract: There are thirteen districts of Kütahya in the Aegean Region. The subject
of our study is Gediz, about 95 km southwest of Kütahya and 45 km north of Uşak. The
history of Gediz dates back to the Phrygians (750 BC). The settlement, which was managed
as a sanjak during the Seljuk State and Germiyanoğlu Principality, was later under Ottoman
rule. Gediz, the flood in 1875, 1901, 1911, 1945, was destroyed by fire in 1911 and the
earthquake he had suffered in 1970. After the earthquake of 1970, with the decision of the
Council of Ministers dated 05.08.1970,7/1164 no, the settlement was moved to the so-called
“Karılar Bazaar” which is 7 km away from Eskigediz on the Simav highway.
In the land survey conducted in Eskigediz in 2018, ten fountains, six bridges, two
laundries, two baths, an aqueduct and a water reservoir belonging to the Ottoman and Early
Republican period were identified. The presence of the Gediz River in the city is one of the
main factors that provide diversification of water-related structures. The buildings have
undergone local changes with user and natural destructions. In this study, the plan and
space fictions of the buildings examined in situ were introduced with the methodology of Art
History and their place in the water structures built during the Turkish period in Anatolia was
discussed.

Kula volcanoes: The Kula volcanoes and their surroundings between the Kula and Salikhli districts have a volcanic geological structure and were declared a member of the UNESCO Network of Geoparks in 2013.

The zoo has a wide variety of natural formations that were formed under the influence of temperature fluctuations, rain, wind and erosion: The fabulous chimneys of Kula create a magnificent landscape with their pastel tones and fantastic relief in the Gediz Valley

Gediz Valley.Lake Salda: Lake Salda is a fresh, deep—water lake with inviting turquoise water and light, almost white sand, which the locals nicknamed the Turkish Maldives. Lake Salda is located at an altitude of 1140 meters above sea level. It was formed as a result of a volcanic eruption, in its very center — a crater. Lake Salda is volcanic and completely natural.

Rock tombs Fethiye: It is one of the five cleanest lakes in the world. The rock tombs in the Fethiye Mugla area are ancient tombs carved into the rocks. They are located in Fethiye, on the territory of Mugla province, on the Turkish coast of the Aegean Sea. The tombs were carved into the rocks in the period from the V century BC to the IV century AD.

Among them, the most famous is the tomb of Amintas, which is located on top of a hill and has a beautiful view of the city and the sea. It is believed that Amintos was the ruler of the Lycian kingdom. The entrance to the tomb is located at the top of the hill and leads through a staircase.

WIKIPEDIA:

İzmir (UK: /ˈɪzmɪər/ IZ-meer, US: /ɪzˈmɪər/ iz-MEER; Turkish pronunciation: [ˈizmiɾ] ) is a metropolitan city on the west coast of Anatolia, and capital of İzmir Province. It is the third most populous city in Turkey, after Istanbul and Ankara, and the largest urban agglomeration on the Aegean Sea.
In 2019, the city of İzmir had a population of 2,965,900, while İzmir Province had a total population of 4,367,251. Its built-up (or metro) area was home to 3,209,179 inhabitants. It extends along the outlying waters of the Gulf of İzmir and inland to the north across the Gediz River Delta; to the east along an alluvial plain created by several small streams; and to slightly more rugged terrain in the south.
Until the 1923 population exchange between Greece and Turkey, İzmir had a very large Greek population.
The modern name İzmir is the Turkish rendering of the Greek name Smyrna and Smyrne (Σμύρνη). In medieval times, Westerners used forms like Smire, Zmirra, Esmira, Ismira, which was rendered as İzmir into Turkish, originally written as ازمير with the Ottoman Turkish alphabet.
Lying on an advantageous location at the head of a gulf running down in a deep indentation, midway along the western Anatolian coast, İzmir has been one of the principal mercantile cities of the Mediterranean Sea for much of its history.

Smyrna (/ˈsmɜːrnə/ SMUR-nə; Ancient Greek: Σμύρνη, romanized: Smýrnē, or Σμύρνα, Smýrna) was a Greek city located at a strategic point on the Aegean coast of Anatolia. Due to its advantageous port conditions, its ease of defence, and its good inland connections, Smyrna rose to prominence. The name of the city since about 1930 is İzmir.
Two sites of the ancient city are today within Izmir's boundaries. The first site, probably founded by indigenous peoples, rose to prominence during the Archaic Period as one of the principal ancient Greek settlements in western Anatolia. The second, whose foundation is associated with Alexander the Great, reached metropolitan proportions during the period of the Roman Empire. Most of the present-day remains of the ancient city date from the Roman era, the majority from after a second-century AD earthquake. In practical terms, a distinction is often made between these. Old Smyrna was the initial settlement founded around the 11th century BC, first as an Aeolian settlement, and later taken over and developed during the Archaic Period by the Ionians. Smyrna proper was the new city which residents moved to as of the fourth century BC and whose foundation was inspired by Alexander the Great.

Main Features:
İzmir has over 3000 years of recorded urban history and up to 8500 years of history as a human settlement since the Neolithic period.[citation needed] Set in an advantageous location at the head of a gulf in a deep indentation midway along the western Anatolian coast, the city has been one of the principal mercantile ports of the Mediterranean Sea for much of its history. Modern İzmir also incorporates the nearby ancient cities of Ephesus, Pergamon, Sardis and Klazomenai, and centers of international tourism such as Kuşadası, Çeşme, Mordoğan and Foça. When the Ottomans took over İzmir in the 15th century, they did not inherit compelling historical memories, unlike the other key points of the Ottoman trade network, namely Constantinople (Istanbul), Damascus, Baghdad and Cairo.

Izmir's port is Turkey's primary port for exports in terms of the freight handled and its free zone, a Turkish-U.S. joint-venture established in 1990, is the leader among the twenty in Turkey. The workforce, and particularly its rising class of young professionals, is concentrated either in the city or in its immediate vicinity (such as in Manisa and Turgutlu), and as either larger companies or SMEs, affirm their names with an increasingly wider global scale and intensity.
