On my way back from Puerto Plata, a stop in Rio San Juan was planned for the longest time. Laguna Gri Gri has been on my bucket list for a good 10 years.
However, Río San Juan is not the place I visit regularly, so the trip to Puerto Plata was just right for me to plan the little extra adventure.
The motorbike ride alone is cool. Large parts of the road lead along the sea. Rio San Juan is a small village. .
The lagoon is well signposted and I found my way right away.
The restaurants around the lagoon are overpriced even by Bavaro standards.
Across from my hotel was a small Italian restaurant with a great cappuccino and croissant. My insider tip!
The boat ride was awesome. Through the mangrove tunnel, with a guide and a captain who know the area like the back of their hand and had fun showing and explaining everything.
The Swallows Cave, Piscina Natural, Playa Caleton, Lovers' Beach, .. Turquoise colored sea, A dream excursion on this Caribbean island.

Exploring Rio San Juan: Top Attractions and Hidden Gems
Río San Juan (Dominican Republic) is maybe a less known coastal town when it comes to tourist attractions, however, recently, it's being discovered more and more by tourists and locals as a very appealing and tranquil destination, full of hidden gems, such as Lagunas, cenotes, and breathtaking remote beaches. In this video, I will cover some of those attractions which I think, are definitely worth your attention.
Rio San Juan is part of the Maria Trinidad Sanchez Province on the North-East Coast located between Puerto Plata and Nagua. From Puerto Plata, it’s a about 55-mile drive east, and it takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes to reach via the winding coastal road with gorgeous views of the North Atlantic ocean. Driving from Sosua, it took me about 1 hour to get there, and it's a stretch of about 60 km.
Together with you viewers, we'll be exploring this area by visiting attractions one by one as they appear on the map.

HOW TO SPEND THE DAY in RIO SAN JUAN, Dominican Republic (Natural Piscina, Laguna Dudu and More)
We spent the day in Rio San Juan, Dominican Republic exploring and it was one of the best days during our travels.
We hired a driver who picked us up in Cabarete (Puerto Plata area) and drove over to Rio San Juan which was about an hour drive. All 3 of these attractions were all relatively close and made for the best day in Rio San Juan (Cabrera). If you are visiting the Puerto Plata area in Dominican Republic, I highly recommend you check out all of these places.
