何年も工事休館となっていた、アルベール・カーン美術館&庭園が先々週末ついにリニューアル・オープンしました。小雪混じりとなった寒い一日ではありましたが、早速見学に行きます！
アルベール・カーンは19世紀末〜20世紀初頭に生きた裕福な銀行家。自分自身も世界を旅し、世界平和を夢見て、そのためには異文化間の相互理解が必要だという信念のもと、世界50ヵ国以上の異文化世界の様子を写真や映像として収集。
地球文書と呼ばれる彼の写真・映像コレクションは、当時の世界の姿を収めた貴重な資料となっています。
そのコレクションと両輪を成すのが、ブーローニュの自邸に造られた庭園。多くの財界人や文学者やアーティスト、当時のセレブリティたちをもてなしたカーンの庭園もやはり、全体に調和を持って組み合わされた異なるスタイルの庭園を回遊する、Jardin à scènes と呼ばれる当時の上流階級の間で大流行したスタイルの庭の、現在に残る希少な例でもあります。
全体で約４ha弱の庭園には、フランス式庭園、イギリス式庭園、バラ園、カーンの生まれ故郷のヴォージュの森、そして和風庭園があることでも有名です。カーンは２度に渡って日本に旅行し、日本の宮家や政財界とも親交を結んでいた大変な親日家でした。日本の暮らしや精神性に共感したカーンは、日本で見た風景を再現したいと、パリに戻ってすぐに、日本の庭師を呼び寄せ、和風庭園を作らせます。
茶室と、当時カーンが日本で購入して運ばせた２軒の日本家屋とが配置された「日本の村」と呼ばれる部分と、1980年代に現代風日本庭園として改修された部分からなる和風庭園は、パリ内外で訪れることができる数少ない和風庭園として、フランスの人々からも長く愛されてきました。
新しくなったミュージアムの設計は隈研吾。縁側や簾といった和風建築のボキャブラリーをキーにした、洗練されたシンプルさの、軽快かつ軽やかな現代建築が誕生しました。ぜひ訪れてみたい美術館＆庭園です。
