Railbiking With Tracks and Yaks in Frostburg, MD

We visited a rail biking tour called Tracks and Yaks which is located in Frostburg, MD, and uses the same tracks as the Western Maryland Scenic Railway, adjacent to the Great Allegheny Passage Trail! The line was abandoned for regular freight service in 1975 before the Scenic Railway began operating it. The railbike tour has only been in place for a few months, and featured a nearly 10 mile downhill tour from Frostburg to MP 171 just west of Cumberland, MD.

We rode the RailBikes! It was all downhill, no steering needed. Just a lovely jaunt over some bridges and through the woods on a perfect autumn day. This is not a paid promotion; it was really just that fun. Start at tracksandyaks.com.

Day Odyssey Series: Frostburg MD (with Nat'l Pike parts) (May 2 2021)

A throwback to the good 'ol Odyssey days-literally! A combination of routes, including one we first discovered a few decades back!

This one takes us over various parts of the original National Pike from Baltimore to Frostburg MD, with stops at points of interest along the way. Lots of scenery as well, along with quaint hamlets! Too much to mention-you'll have to watch!

The National Pike (most of which is now US 40) is a fascinating road to discover. Historic maps from 70-100 years back showing it on various different alignments, and part of the fun is finding those alignments! For those so inclined, the website NETR Historic Aerials has a great collection of classic maps! Nice classic aerials too.

Anyway, gonna make an effort to get back into making classic Odysseys again! Yes, have had to slow down a bit because of things, but I'm still standing-and will continue to as long as I can.

Railbiking in Maryland & La Vale Tollhouse

Ride the historic railroad from Frostburg to Cash Valley on rail bikes, pedaling along the scenic railway. Railbiking is scenic, fun, and not difficult for adventurers of any level. See what railbiking is all about, and join us for a ride from Frostburg to Cash Valley along the Western Maryland Scenic Railway. We also stop at the historic La Vale Tollhouse - built in 1835 as one of the places to collect tolls on the Old National Pike. The Pike was built between 1811 and 1837, and is the first major improved highway in the United States built by the government.
