Freeport, Illinois is home to the second of the Lincoln-Douglas debates, and there's a statue of both Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas debating at a park in downtown. It's known as the Pretzel City, and the high school's athletic teams go by the pretzels. Otherwise, Freeport is another dying Illinois town as overtime, jobs have disappeared with no new jobs taking place of the old ones.

Featuring both a thriving downtown and beautiful beaches - Westerly is a can't miss stop along your New England road trip. While you're there make sure to spend a day at Misquamicut State Beach for some fun in the sun, as well as visiting the Watch Hill district of Westerly.
Stonington & Mystic, CT
Best known for the village of Mystic - Stonington, CT boasts some of the most unforgettable sights along the New England coastline. Mystic is home to a one of a kind drawbridge that is terrible for traffic and amazing to see in action, leveraging two gigantic rocks as counterweights! If that wasn't enough, just off of Main St is the Mystic Seaport Museum - featuring restored and preserved historical vessels that you can even actually board - as well as a reimagined waterfront settlement to stroll. Away from the hustle and bustle of Mystic, a walk through Stonington's quiet and cute downtown leads right to the Stonington Lighthouse Museum - which was built back in 1840! Dubois Beach, and most importantly Stonington Point - a beautiful sunset spot where you can see both RI and NY while standing in CT!
Washington, CT
Last but not least, our only non-coastal recommendation is Washington, CT. This small town's charm is so overwhelming that it is actually the inspiration for the early 2000s TV, Gilmore Girls! Home to some of our favorite hiking spots, including the Thoreau Bridge at Hidden Valley Preserve - Washington, CT can't be missed for those looking to find a quiet moment in nature.

Where Did Fastest Growing Town In America, Freeport Florida, Get It's Name?
From 2000 to 2010 Freeport Florida grew at 50.2% from 2010 to 2020 the estimated growth is 56.9%. We searched for the origins of the town name and never could find a definite answer. It has had 3 names; Genoa, Four Mile Landing, and Finally Freeport.
Today on 30A Misfits OFFROAD, we visit Freeport. We start our day with an incredible cinnamon roll, check out a beautiful creek, indulge our inner child after hunting for some local history, have lunch at a local favorite, wander through a picker's paradise, have some dessert at one of the newer businesses in Freeport, and end our day making a feathered friend on the bay.

The 30A name comes from a road in South Walton County (County Road 30A) that spans roughly 20 miles along the Florida Panhandle coastline. Yet not too far from the city of Portland, on the far side of the Casco Bay sits a fascinating natural quirk that might make you question whether you're still in the Pine Tree State. Originally hidden beneath a layer of topsoil, a field of glacial sand deposits laid dormant for thousands of years until negligent farming techniques of the 1800s rendered the soil untenable and made way for the giant bed of dunes to be uncovered. This land was later purchased about a century ago to convert this mess into a roadside tourist attraction. Just as the first nationwide highway system came into operation, vacationers got word of this Desert of Maine and stopped by on other journeys to marvel at a sight they probably could not see elsewhere in this part of the country. In addition to wandering around this strange complex of sand dunes, we will catch a glimpse of the actual town of Freeport and witness some more of Maine's coastal beauty. Don't desert this region of Maine too quickly, you might miss out on some real fun and adventure!
