SAINT RAPHAËL, FRANCE: Join me for a tour of Saint Raphaël on the French Riviera (Côte d'Azur) in the South of France, a resort town with a park, old church and a neighbourhood called Port-Fréjus.

I spent an evening walking around the small town of Saint Raphaël on France’s Mediterranean Coast. I had caught a ferry from the harbour earlier in the day and thought I would stop by for dinner and a spot of sightseeing on my way back. As always, I had my trusty video camera along with me!
My tour began at Jardin Bonaparte, a pretty little park perched on the corner of town overlooking the sea. From there I could see the large fairground wheel and some luxury yachts moored in the harbour, so after admiring the views I headed past Plage Veillat Beach towards the old town. Although small it was good to explore Saint Raphaël Church (Basilique Notre-Dame-de-la-Victoire) and some of the pretty little streets running through the town centre.
As sunset approached I walked along Plage de Fréjus and onto Port Fréjus where I took a leisurely walk around the expensive boats and luxury apartments overlooking the port and Mediterranean Sea. I thought Saint Raphaël was definitely worth a visit and I enjoyed the few hours that I spent there - in fact the experience has left me excited to see more of the amazing French Riviera in the coming days!

Welcome to Saint Raphael / Fréjus, France!
If you are looking for a calm seaside resort on the French Riviera, where you can unwind and relax, without feeling “obligated” to party every night (like in Saint Tropez, for example), Saint Raphael is the best choice you can make.
It is located just a few kilometers south-east of Frejus, in the shadow of the Massif de l'Esterel. If you want to spend your time in a town that has a long tradition of tourism, you will be glad to find out this is one of the oldest resorts on the coast. Wealthy Romans used to spend their summers in Saint Raphael 2000 years ago! It is clean and well-maintained and has only a small harbour.
Saint Raphael is not really a historic town like its neighboring Frejus; however, as a lively and popular resort, it has lovely beaches right in the town centre!

Saint-Raphaël est baignée du sud-ouest à l’est par la mer Méditerranée. À l’ouest et au nord-ouest se trouve la commune associée de Fréjus, au nord, les hameaux forojuliens de Saint-Jean-de-l’Esterel et Saint-Jean-de-Cannes. À l’extrême nord-est du hameau du Trayas, se trouve la station balnéaire de Miramar dépendante de Théoule-sur-Mer.
Saint-Raphaël is bathed from south-west to east by the Mediterranean Sea. To the west and north-west is the associated commune of Fréjus, to the north, the Forojulien hamlets of Saint-Jean-de-l'Esterel and Saint-Jean-de-Cannes. In the extreme north-east of the hamlet of Le Trayas, is the seaside resort of Miramar, dependent on Théoule-sur-Mer.

Roman bricks where built to last
Having been back just over a month from 10 weeks in Italy looking at everything greek, roman and etruscan, I’ve finally decided it’s time for another blog post.
