Concarneau Travel Guide - Best Things to do in France
#Concarneau (Breton: Konk-Kerne, meaning Bay of Cornouaille) is a commune in the #Finistère department of #Brittany in north-western #France. Concarneau is bordered to the west by the Baie de La Forêt. The town has two distinct areas: the modern town on the mainland and the medieval Ville Close, a walled town on a long island in the centre of the harbour. Historically, the old town was a centre of shipbuilding. The Ville Close is now devoted to tourism with many restaurants and shops aimed at tourists.
As well as being France’s third most important fishing port, Concarneau has other assets that make it a very popular summer resort. The main draw is the quaint ville close (walled town) followed by some lovely sandy beaches and a lively maritime festival in August.
Concarneau has made its living from the fishing industry for hundreds of years and the town remains an important centre: more than 100,000 tonnes of tuna are caught each year by Concarneau-based boats. It’s possible for tourists to visit the fish auction, canneries and also sometimes to assist the deep-sea fishermen to unload their catch. But more adventurous sorts might like to join an organised trip on an old sardine boat to try their own hand.
The ville close is without doubt Concarneau’s most popular tourist attraction. This old stone fortified ‘town’ has just a few narrow streets filled with shops and restaurants, where geraniums tumble from window boxes. Take a walk around the ramparts for spectacular views over the area. Near the entrance to the ville close is the Musée de la Pêche, where visitors can learn all about the fishing industry and visit an old trawler.
Several scenic walks start in Concarneau, such as the pushchair-friendly route through Kérandon wood, but the most pleasant is probably the coastal path from Quai de la Croix, past the splendid villas, to the Sables Blancs beach. Here, in July and August, you’ll find water- and land-based activities to suit adults and kids alike.
On the outskirts of Concarneau is the Château de Keriolet, a fine example of 19th-century Gothic architecture, part of which dates back to the 15th century. Restored to its former glory, the house is now open for guided visits.
One of Brittany’s most colourful and authentic festivals takes place in Concarneau in August: Le Festival des Filets Bleus. This festival of ‘blue nets’ celebrates the town’s fishing industry with traditional music and dancing, sea shanties and a smorgasbord of fishy fare.

Ihr sucht nach einem Ferienhaus für euren nächsten Urlaub? Dann schaut mal bei vorbei. Dort gibt es 40.000 Urlaubsdomizile in 29 europäischen Ländern. Da sollte also für jeden was dabei sein. Wir waren super zufrieden mit unserem Haus in Bénodet und können es nur empfehlen.
Die Bretagne ist wirklich wunderschön und so unheimlich abwechslungsreich. Ich zeige euch einen breiten Querschnitt der Sehenswürdigkeiten von den besten Surfspots in Frankreich über malerische Dörfer, wie das süße Pont-Aven bis hin zu den rauen Klippen des Pointe du Raz. Ein Muss bei eurem Urlaub in die Bretagne ist ein Ausflug in die bretonische Karibik: Die Glénan Inseln sehen dem Urlaubsparadies mit ihren weißen Sandstränden und dem türkisen Wasser nämlich zum verwechseln ähnlich. Der perfekte Ort um zu entspannen, aber auch für aktiven Wassersport.

Van 25 juni tot 15 juli reden we met de camper door Normandië en Bretagne in noord Frankrijk. Als basis hadden de camperreis ‘Wilde kust, woest verleden’ van de NKC.
De route begint in Veules-les-Roses en gaat langs de kust van Normandië in Le Mont-Saint-Michel over in Bretagne. Ook in Bretagne volgt de route de kust en eindigt in Locmariaquer.
Tussen Veules-les-Roses en Locmariaquer hebben we die highlights uit de NKC route ‘Wilde kust, woest verleden’ gehaald die ons interessant leken. We hebben de , dag etappes iets anders ingedeeld en op andere camperplaatsen gestaan.

Concarneau [kɔ̃.kaʁ.no] est une commune du département du Finistère dans la région Bretagne en France.
Troisième commune du Finistère par sa population, chef-lieu d'un canton et d'une communauté d'agglomération, Concarneau, qui inclut les anciennes communes de Beuzec-Conq et Lanriec, est une ville située sur la côte cornouaillaise dans la baie de La Forêt.
La ville s'est constituée au Moyen Âge à partir de la ville close située dans l'estuaire du Moros. Cet abri naturel a permis le développement du septième port de pêche français en tonnage débarqué et d'importants chantiers navals.
Sa situation sur le littoral et son patrimoine historique en font aujourd'hui une destination touristique bretonne de premier plan.

Slow Travels Through Brittany, France
Our travels through Brittany in northwest France brought us to towering cliffs and quaint islands, to meet producers of seaweed and cider, pickers of oysters and brewers of beer. We sought out medieval castles and cute Breton villages, wild coastlines and quaint canals - and learnt why those that hail from this beautiful region are so incredibly proud.
Destinations featured include Cap Fréhel, Vannes, Ile d'Arz, St Malo, Cancale, and Suscinio Castle.
