10 Awesome Things To Do in South Padre Island with the whole family!

✅Best-Selling travel gear
????Booking.com Deals

Most people associate South Padre Island with spring break, but it is still a great beach destination the other 51 weeks of the year. Thanks to South Padre’s mild weather, calm seas, and an average of 300 days of sunshine, you can do just about anything you want, all year long. If your idea of fun is a little less adventurous, there are calmer activities you can enjoy, such as visiting the islands, nature centers, wildlife refuges, or walking on one of the many boardwalks.

Welcome to Things To Do Channel, your online travel guide. We are happy to help on your travels around the globe, be sure to subscribe and don't forget to ring the bell to be updated on our latest videos.

Here are 10 Things To Do in South Padre Island texas

Port Isabel Lighthouse.

Port Isabel Lighthouse is one of the 16 lighthouses originally constructed along the Texas coast and the only one open to the public. It is a popular site for photographers and visitors. If you climb the 75 winding stairs and three short ladders, you will have great views of South Padre Island and the beaches. The lighthouse has long been a prominent landmark on the southern tip of the Texas Gulf Coast. Its heavy brick walls have enabled it to withstand the elements for more than a century.

Sea Turtle, Inc.

Don’t miss the chance to visit the renowned Sea Turtle, Inc. The facility itself serves as a hospital for sick and injured sea turtles. Each year, they rescue and rehabilitate over 100 sea turtles with the goal of returning them to the wild. Sea Turtle, Inc. was founded in 1977, by Ila Fox Loetscher, better known as the “Turtle Lady of South Padre Island.”

Laguna Madre Island Trail.

The Laguna Madre or Mother Lagoon Nature Trail is a 1.1 mile (1.8 km) loop trail on a 1,500 foot (457.2 meters) boardwalk that crosses 4 acres (1.6 hectares) of marshland. It offers scenic views of the lagoon and is used for nature walks and birding.

Isla Blanca Park.

Isla Blanca Park is located on the southernmost tip of South Padre Island and is the crown jewel of the park's system. Within the park, there is over a mile of pristine beach along the Gulf of Mexico. Also within the park are many recreation amenities available for a wide range of outdoor activities.

Dolphin Research and Sea Life Center.

The Dolphin Research and Sea Life Research Center is located next to the Port Isabel Lighthouse. Their mission is to educate the public regarding the wild bottlenose dolphins, native to Laguna Madre Bay and South Padre Island, in addition to promoting public support for the wildlife of the area.

Sandy Feet sandcastle lessons.

Next time you go to the beach, impress beachgoers with your amazing sand sculpting. On South Padre Island, you can get professional private or group instruction from Sandy Feet Sand Castle Services. They work with all ages and skill levels and all tools are provided, with some you can take home.

Schlitterbahn Beach Waterpark.

The Schlitterbahn Water Park is a 25 acre (10.1 hectares) park, with two dozen world-class attractions, such as 13 indoor and outdoor water slides, river systems where you can float along, a surfing ride, body slide, tidal wave river, uphill water coaster, Lily Pad wading pool and Pirates Cove for children, swim-up cocktail area, a seaside pool, and of course, beaches. Thrill levels range from low speed to aggressive.

The South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center.

This is Rio Grande Valley's top destination for birdwatching and an ideal place to observe butterflies and natural wildlife in coastal South Texas. You can walk down the boardwalks; take a birding tour, and experience the nature center. The butterfly garden is full of fluttering visitors from summer to late fall, when the Monarchs arrive.

Wyland Whaling Wall Number 53/

The magnificent, enormous, life-size paintings of orca whales on South Padre Island Convention Center are part of the worldwide campaign Wyland’s Walls, organized by the renowned painter Wyland and the Wyland Foundation, who had the goal of completing 100 life-size marine murals in public places around the world. They completed their goal in 2008 after 27 years.

Skydiving.

There is probably no greater adrenaline rush than jumping from a perfectly good airplane flying at 11,000 feet. The views of South Padre Island and the ocean are certainly spectacular, but once you jump, for about 60 seconds you are falling at speeds of almost 150 miles per hour and you do not have the time to take in the view.

Day Trip to Brownsville ???? (FULL EPISODE) S10 E6

At the very tip of Texas, where just a river separates two countries, a vibrant Tex-Mexified adventure awaits. Time for some South Texas-trippin'!

Housed in a 1920s train depot, this museum tells the story of the Mexican-American War and how it lead to Brownsville’s creation. The exhibits show that Brownsville is a place where the histories of Mexico and Texas mix together.

You can visit the Palo Alto battlefield to learn about the first battle in the Mexican-American War. Tour the battlefield, get a bird’s eye view from the observation deck and even see historic cannons and field guns from the battle.

If you’re expecting brisket and sausage at this barbecue joint, then you’re thinking of the wrong kind of ‘cue. Sure, it’s still smoked meat, but Vera’s is one of the few spots left in the states serving up traditional Mexican barbacoa — a full cow head cooked in a burning pit in the ground. Don’t let the words “cow head” scare you off, it’s mighty tasty in a taco.

When you’re in Brownsville, just prepare for tacos galore. This local favorite is opened late and tacos are about a dollar a piece. The choices are simple: choose between 6 or 8 street tacos and choose your meat. Then prepare for a beautiful presentation of tacos piled high with avocado, onions and cilantro, with plenty of hot sauce choices.

The Sable Palm Sanctuary is an old sugar cane plantation right in the middle of a lush native palm forest filled with colorful birds and wildlife. Take a stroll through the sanctuary to get lost in the South Texas beauty.

Boca Chica Beach is the spot where the Rio Grande meets up with the Gulf of Mexico. It’s a pretty cool to see this water that has floated all the way down from El Paso.

Florida Parks: Explore Dry Tortugas National Park

The Dry Tortugas National Park, a series of islands 70 miles from Key West, is a place of great beauty, history and solitude.

There’s no road to Dry Tortugas. You take a boat or seaplane, but only if weather permits. You can camp near Fort Jefferson on the island called Garden Key, but don’t forget the can opener because the nearest convenient store is a long way off. You can visit for the day, but again be prepared for whatever. This is a special, isolated park where the screeching birds and the breeze rustling through the treetops provide the soundtrack. About 60,000 tourists visit annually. In comparison, Great Smoky Mountains National Park attracts 11 million visitors who jam the road with their vehicles.
