마지막 빙하기 이후에 이 지역이 바다 밑에서 융기하며 드러난 석회암으로 지은 마을의 집벽과 계단을 자세히 보면 고생대 바다생물의 화석들이 먼 옛날 옛적의 소식을 알려주는 곳!!!!
프랑스 ‘미디피레네’ 지역의 ‘알주’ 협곡에 높이 110-364m의 가파른 석회암 절벽 위에 세워진 작은 중세 마을 ‘호까마두흐’라는 이름은 ‘기적의 성당’ 공사 중, 암벽에서 1166년에 부식되지 않은 상태로 발견된 초기 기독교 ‘아마두르 ‘ 성자가 발견된 바위 (Roc)라는 뜻이다. Roc + Amadour
이때부터 수 많은 순례자들이 성자의 유물을 보기 위하여 찾아왔으며, 많은 기적이 일어나고 특히, 병 고침의 기적이 많이 일어난다.
예루살렘, 로마, 산티아고와 더불어 교황청에서 세계 4대 성지로 인정한 곳인데, 중세시절 귀족과 왕들이 주로 찾던 성지였던 이 곳은 ‘야고보’ 성인을 찾아 ‘꼼포스텔 Compostelle’까지 가는 ‘생 자크 드 콩포스텔’(St Jacques de Compostelle) 순례여행과 같은 차원으로 전 유럽의 가톨릭 교인들이 순례하였던 곳이다. 가장 번성한 시기에는 8,000명 주민이 겹겹이 싸인 성벽 안에 ‘믿음의 요새 ‘를 만든다.
이 곳을 더 유명하게 만든 것은 ‘노트르담 성당’의 ‘검은 성모마리아’ 상과 바다에 변고가 있을 때마다 저절로 울리는 ‘기적의 종’이다. 소원이 이루어지고 병 고침의 기적이 이루어진다는 검은 성모마리아와 예수상에 유럽 각지에서 성소에 도착한 순례자들이 다양한 물건들을 바치는데, 중세시대 십자군 전쟁에서 포로로 잡혔다가 자유의 몸이 된 죄수들이 자신들을 묶었던 쇠사슬을 바치기도 하였단다. 대리석에 비문을 작성하여 바친 것들이 성당 벽면에 가득 전시되어 있는 것으로 보아 기적을 경험하는 사람들이 많은 모양이다.
먼 바다에서 재해가 일어나면 성당 천정에 매달린 볼품없이 조그맣고 초라한 종이 울려서 알려주는데,이 때 바다의 풍랑에서 살아남은 뱃사람들이 감사하는 마음으로 또는 재해를 막아주기를 기원하면서 바친 선박모형들이 천정에 매달려있다.
중세 프랑스 최초의 무훈시 “롤랑의 노래 La Chanson de Roland”는, 이베리아 반도를 점령하고 프랑스까지 밀고 들어오는 이슬람 세력에 맞서 싸우는 샤를마뉴 대제와 기사들의 영웅적인 이야기이다.
767년 왕위에 올라 프랑크 왕국을 세우고 800년에 로마의 교황으로부터 신성로마제국 황제로 대관식을 받은 샤를마뉴 대제를 수행하는 열두 명의 기사들 중에서 가장 용감하고 뛰어났던 ‘홀랑 Roland’에게 천사로부터 기독교를 수호하라는 뜻으로 받은 ‘듀란달’이라는 성 검을 하사한다.
이슬람의 지배를 받던 스페인까지 대군을 거느리고 서쪽으로 원정을 떠나는데, 프랑스 동쪽의 작센 지방에서 반란이 일어나자 황제는 일단 반란군을 진압하기로 결정한다. 이슬람 세력과 휴전하고 동쪽으로 군대를 이동시키면서, 배후에서 본대의 안전을 지키는 중요한 임무를 ‘홀랑’에게 맡긴다.
본대는 무사히 협곡을 지나갔지만, 홀랑을 미워하던 배반자의 음모로 스페인 군에게 매복 당하여 용감히 싸우다가 최후를 맞는 전설적인 영웅 ‘홀랑 Roland’이 생명이 다함을 느끼고 자신의 칼 ‘듀란달 Durandal’을 적에게 빼앗기지 않기 위하여 계곡에 던지는데, 미카엘 대천사장의 도움으로 수천 킬로미터를 날아와서 이곳의 바위에 박힌 것이라는 전설이 인상적이다.

[프랑스] '빅토르 위고'가 좋아한 노르망디 지방의 가장 아름다운 마을 '벨레로즈' Veules-les-Roses
우리 에게는 다소 낯선 마을인 ‘벨-레-로즈 Veules-les-roses’는 노르망디 '디에프 Dieppe' 해변 가까이 위치해 있으며, 빅토르 위고 등 많은 문인들과 예술가들이 거쳐간 아름다운 해변 마을이다. '프랑스의 가장 아름다운 마을들'(Les plus beaux villages de France)에 선정된 '뵐 래 로즈' 강추!!!
강을 따라 오밀조밀 지어진 초옥들을 가로 지르는 산책로는 대 문호 '빅토르 위고 Victor Hugo'가 이 마을에 머물던 시기에 가장 선호하던 코스였다는데, 발원지에서부터 바다로 흘러 들어가기 까지 길이가 겨우 1.100 m 인 '뵐 Veules' 강은 프랑스에서 가장 짧은 강이면서, 노르망디 양식의 초가집들과 1830년 대에 지어진 다양한 양식의 별장들이 독특한 매력을 풍긴다.
'뵐-레- 로즈 Veules les roses'는 아름다운 절벽과 바닷가, 썰물 때 드러나는 고운 모래사장, 풍부한 역사적 유물, 노르망디 양식의 독특한 초가집, 굴 양식장에서 갓 출하된 싱싱한 굴, 어부들이 직판하는 활어… 무엇 하나 빼 놓을 수 없이 여행의 재미를 더해준다.
또한 강의 발원지 가까이에서 14세기부터 재배하기 시작한 '크레송 cresson'이 마을의 명물로 꼽히는데, 미나리와 흡사한 크레송은 철분과 칼슘이 풍부하며 싸하게 톡 쏘는 맛과 부드러운 잎으로 유명하여 미식가들이 즐겨 찾는다. 겨울철 푸른 야채로는 최고!!!
간단 역사
프랑스 최초의 왕조인 ‘메로뱅 시대’의 중요 인물들의 묘가 발견되는 것으로 보아, 이 마을의 기원은 노르망디 지방에서 가장 오래된 마을들 중 하나로 약 4세기로 여겨지는데, '뵐 veules' 라는 단어의 어원이 '물이 나는 곳' 이라는 것 만 봐도 지하수가 솟아나는 곳을 중심으로 마을이 번성하였음을 알 수 있다.
강을 끼고 양털 세탁업이나 수력을 이용한 방앗간들이 이 마을의 주력 산업으로 발전하였지만, 산업혁명 이후에 증기기관이 사용되며 점차 쇠락의 길을 걷게 되면서 서서히 잊혀져 간다.
역사 속으로 사라지던 이 마을이 전환기를 맞이하는 것은, 파리의 ‘코메디 프랑세즈Comédie Française’의 단원이던 ‘아나이스 오베르 Anaïs Aubert’ 라는 여배우가 1826년 이 마을을 발견하고, 파리에 돌아가서 자신의 지인들에게 적극적으로 홍보를 하면서 세인의 주목을 받게 된다. 파리에서 그리 멀지도 않고, 조용한 시골 풍경과 바닷가의 정취를 한꺼번에 느낄 수 있는 이 곳을 즐겨 찾는 사람들이 늘어나면서, 아름다운 빌라들이 세워지고 생기를 되찾게 되었다고 한다.

꾸불 꾸불한 길에서 만나는 쎙 마르땡 성당은 시간의 벽을 넘어 오히려 정겹게 다가온다. 이 성당은 12-13세기 고딕 양식의 종탑과 몇 가지를 제외하고는 15-16세기 초반에 대부분 새로 지어진 것이라고 하는데 건물 내부의 가장 오래된 부분은 종탑을 받치고 있는 엄청난 굵기의 네 기둥들로 연결된 교차볼트이다.
성소의 북쪽 기둥에는 가장 오래된 문양들이 조각되어 있는데, 50 여 개의 각종 형태의 문양이 왜 성당에 자리를 잡았을까? 화살과 화살 통을 든 사랑과 미움의 장난꾸러기 큐피터를 비롯하여 인어, 바다 가재를 비롯하여 종교적 색채를 띤 화살에 관통 당한 예수의 심장도 있다. 지역적 특성이 성당 내부에 반영된 듯......
또한, 주술적 의미가 가미된 독특한 모습들도 보이는데, 샴 쌍둥이처럼 머리가 붙은 형상, 귀가 뽀족한 사람, 엄청나게 긴 수염의 사람, 거울을 든 여인, 인어.... 형상이 잘 보이지 않는 상징적인 도형들은 무엇이지 보는 이로 하여금 온갖 상상력을 유발시킨다.
빅토르 위고 Victor Hugo
1868년 이 마을에 집을 장만하여 집필을 하던 소설가이며 출판업자 ‘뽈 뫼리스 Paul Meurice’ 와의 친분으로, 대 문호 ‘빅토르 위고 Victor HUGO’가 이 마을에 4번이나 묵은 것을 기념하는 동판이 해변가에 설치되었는데, 예술인들에게 영감을 주는 ‘파르나스 Parnasse’에서 역사의 영웅들 호메로스, 단테, 몰리에르가 빅토르 위고를 맞이하는 장면, 대문호의 작품에 등장하는 주인공들과 함께한 장면, 그리고 상원에서 연설하는 위고의 모습이 새겨져 있다.

‘Vules-les-roses’ is located near the beach of Dieppe in Normandy, and is a beautiful seaside village where many writers and artists, including Victor Hugo, passed through. I highly recommend ‘Beau Lae Rose,’ which was selected as one of ‘The Most Beautiful Villages of France’ (Les plus beaux villages de France)!!!
It is said that the walking path that crosses the densely built green houses along the river was the favorite course of the great writer Victor Hugo when he stayed in this village. The 'Veules' is only 1.100 m long from the source to the point where it flows into the sea. The river is the shortest river in France, and the Normandy-style thatched houses and villas of various styles built in the 1830s give it a unique charm.

‘베즐레’는 인구 492 명의 작은 도시로 ‘꼴린 에테흐넬 Colline éternelle’(영원의 언덕) 정상에 ‘막달라 마리아 대성당'(Basilique Sainte-Madeleine)이 아름다운 자태를 드리우고 있어서, 종교적으로 중요한 장소라는 사실을 직감할 수 있다. 연간 수십만 명에 달하는 관광객과 세계 각국의 정상들이 성당의 조각 물을 보기 위하여 몰려들고 있다. 또한, '프랑스의 가장 아름다운 마을들'(Les plus beaux villages de France)에 선정된 '베즐레' 강추!!!
‘부르고뉴’ 제일의 관광지이자 오래된 도시 ‘베즐레’는 예수의 발을 닦았다는 ‘막달라 마리아'(Marie Madeleine)의 유물을 보유했던 대성당은 12세기에 순례자와 수도승의 성지로 각광 받았다.
1146년 3월 31일 ‘시토회’의 수도사 ‘생 베르나르'(Saint Bernard)의 요청으로 프랑스의 왕 ‘루이 7세'(Louis VII)가 참석한 가운데 제 2차 십자군이 출발한 곳이기도 하다.
또한 예수의 충복 ‘야고보 Jacob’의 시신이 스페인의 ‘콤포스텔'(Compostelle)로 옮겨졌다는 전설에 따라 프랑스에서 ‘콤포스텔’로 향하는 ‘생 자끄 드 꽁포스텔’(St Jacques de Compostelle) 순례 여행의 출발점이다.
백년전쟁 당시에 수도원은 폐허가 되었고1537년 ‘위그노파'(Huguenots)가 완전히 장악한다. 프랑스 대혁명 당시에는 수도원의 일부가 파괴되었다가 1840년부터 1859년까지 ‘비올레 르 뒥'(Viollet-le-Duc)에 의하여 복원되었다.
*** 막달라 마리아 대성당 Basilique Sainte-Madeleine ***
‘막달라 마리아’의 유물을 보관하였기에 여러 가지 기적으로 수 많은 신도들이 몰려들었고, 1120년 7월 22일 ‘순례 여행'(Pèlerinage)를 떠나기 위해 모였던 신도들이 그 전날 화재에 의하여 천여 명이 죽고 성당의 ‘중앙부'(Nef)가 완전 소실된다.
정면 안의 ‘현관'(Narthex)에 3개의 문이 있는데, 좌측 문의 ‘합각 머리'(Tympan)에는 예수가 부활하여 ‘엠마우스'(Emmaüs)의 제자들에게 현신한 모습 등의 부활 후의 행적들을 나타내고 있고, 우측 문의 ‘합각 머리'(Tympan)에는 수태 고지, 성모 방문, 예수 탄생, 동방 박사의 모습 등이 조각되어 있어 예수의 탄생에 대한 성서 이야기가 전개되고 있다.
최고의 걸작인 중앙 문 ‘합각 머리'(Tympan)는 12 명의 제자들에 둘러싸인 예수가 그들에게 소명을 설교하고 있으며 그를 향해 만백성이 다가오고 있다. 부활한 예수가 제자들에게 소명을 일깨우는 것으로 중앙의 제단에 자리잡은 예수는 ‘후광'(Mandorle)을 받고 있으며 다른 인물에 비해 상대적으로 큰 모습이다. ‘성흔'(Stigmate)에서 발하는 빛은 제자들에게 성령 강림을 암시하고 있으며, ‘합각 머리’에서 예수를 반원 형으로 둘러싸고 있는 8개의 장면은 복음 받은 백성의 모습으로서 온 세상에 복음이 전파된다는 것을 보여준다. 예수의 발치의 기둥에는 ‘세례 요한'(Jean Baptiste)이 희생 양을 들고 있다. 이 곳에서 성당 내부를 바라보면 빛의 건축이라고 극찬 받는 이유를 깨닫게 된다.
주두 조각은 다수의 조각가가 완성한 것으로 성서와 신화에서 취한 다양한 주제가 조각되어 있다. 가장 유명한 것은 신비의 방아(Moulin mystique)로 상징으로 가득 차 있다. 방아에 낱알을 넣는 모세와 분말을 받는 베드로가 묘사된 조각으로, 방아 바퀴의 십자가는 방아가 예수를 상징한다는 것을 알려주고, 낱알은 구약 성경의 내용을 의미하고 분말은 옛 계명에 담긴 새 계명을 뜻한다.
성 막달라 마리아 지하 묘소 Crypte de Sainte-Madeleine
이곳에 ‘막달라 마리아’의 유물이 있다. 예수의 총애를 받은 이 여인이 ‘사라 마리아’와 함께 팔레스타인을 거쳐 남프랑스의 까마흐그 늪에 위치한 땅 끝 마을 ‘쌩트 마리 드 라 메흐'(Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer)에 도착한다. 전 세계에 흩어져 사는 집시들의 수호성녀 ‘사라 마리아’가 이 마을에 도착한 것을 기념하는 행사가 요즘도 매년4월 정도에 1주일간 열리고 있다.
막달라 마리아는 ‘쌩크 봄'(Sainte-Baume) 산 정상의 동굴을 은신처로 삼고 살다가 숨을 거두고, ‘쌩 막심'(Saint-Maximin)에 매장하는데, 전설에 의하면 베즐레의 수도사가 와서 막달라 마리아의 유골 일부분을 갖고 와서 지하 성소에 보관한단다.

It is also the place where the Second Crusade departed on March 31, 1146, at the request of the Cistercian monk Saint Bernard, with the King of France, Louis VII, in attendance.
Also, according to the legend that the body of Jesus' faithful servant 'Jacob' was brought to 'Compostelle' in Spain, it is a part of the 'St Jacques de Compostelle' pilgrimage from France to 'Compostelle'. It is a starting point.
