Deadliest Journeys - Cameroon, Birds and Lizards

In Cameroon, only 2% of the roads have been asphalted. All of the country's inhabitants rely on the Clandos' taxi services, they have no other choice. The country has no railway and taking airplanes is both too expensive and too dangerous.

00:00 Cameroon's bravest drivers are known as Clandos. They're illegal cabs, and they're the only ones allowed to drive on Cameroon's entire road network, one of the worst on the African continent.

06:20 Thanks to this, they have a stranglehold on transport in Cameroon, despite the government's best efforts.
00:20 Some routes cross the territory of the Pygmies, a people of Central Africa.
17:30 When goods transports have accidents, villagers loot the cargo
19:18 The loaders in the basalt mines work until they're exhausted, and even the children there have to work in the quarries to go to school.
23:49 With the limited means available, the Clandos are forced to drive with cars fit for the scrap heap.
29:59 Overloaded vans are also subject to road problems.
35:35 Mireille works for an NGO trying to preserve the Pygmé people who live close to nature in the equatorial forests.
41:33 Some mountain towns are inaccessible during the rainy season.
49:02 Even the region's capital has become a ghost town as the population flees.

Cameroon has been granted Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for an 18-month period by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

TPS will only be available to people who are currently living in the United States as of April 14, 2022.

The United States recognizes Cameroon's ongoing armed conflict and will provide temporary security to individuals in need, said Secretary Alejandro N. Mayorkas.

Cameroonian nationals currently residing in the United States who are unable to safely return home due to extreme violence perpetrated by government forces and armed separatists, as well as an increase in Boko Haram-led attacks, will be able to stay and work in the United States until conditions in their home country improve.

When situations in a country fall under one or more of the three statutory bases for designation: continuous armed conflict, environmental calamity, or unusual and temporary conditions, the country may be recognized for TPS.

This categorization is based on continuous armed conflict in Cameroon, as well as extraordinary and temporary conditions that preclude Cameroonian nationals and individuals of no nationality who last habitually stayed in Cameroon from returning safely.

The situation is the result of tremendous bloodshed between government forces and armed separatists, as well as a major increase in Boko Haram attacks, which has resulted in a humanitarian crisis.

Economic instability, food hunger, and hundreds of thousands of displaced Cameroonians have resulted from extreme violence and widespread devastation of civilian infrastructure.

This is the first time the Secretary of Homeland Security has allowed qualifying Cameroonian nationals to remain temporarily in the United States as a result of Cameroon's TPS designation.

Individuals who qualify for TPS under this classification must have lived in the United States continuously since April 14, 2022.

TPS will not be available to anybody who attempts to travel to the United States after April 14, 2022. Cameroon's 18-month designation will take effect on the date the Federal Register notice is published.

Instructions for applying for TPS and an Employment Authorization Document will be included in the Federal Register notice (EAD).

Applicants for TPS must meet all qualifying standards as well as undertake security and background investigations.
