Fontaine de Vaucluse 4K Aqueduc de Galas - Canal de Carpentras | Top Destination France | Planetlenz

One of the most beautiful functioning aqueducts in the south of France. The Aqueduc de Galas marks the entrance to the Famous Fontaine de Vaucluse.

This is a pretty cool bridge that connects not just the canal de Carpentras but a large walking trail that brings you through the Fontaine de Vaucluse.

A super picturesque destination in the Vaucluse region with ridiculous topography and a river that emerges from the mountain side. Perfect for hikers, photographers and picnicking, this destination is a perfect all around spot to see a bit of everything France has to offer.

ABOUT:
The Jardin de la Fontaine is a historic garden located in the city of Nîmes, in the southern region of France. It is one of the oldest public gardens in Europe and holds great cultural and historical significance.

The garden's origins can be traced back to ancient times when Nîmes was a Roman colony known as Nemausus. The garden was built around a natural spring, which had religious importance in Roman times. The Romans believed that the spring was sacred to the deity Nemausus, after whom the city of Nîmes was named.

During the 18th century, the garden was redesigned and expanded in the style of a French formal garden. The project was led by Jacques-Philippe Mareschal, a local engineer, who drew inspiration from the works of André Le Nôtre, the renowned landscape architect responsible for the gardens of the Palace of Versailles.

The Jardin de la Fontaine features a variety of elements that blend nature, architecture, and water features. It encompasses approximately 15 hectares of land and includes statues, fountains, ponds, canals, and pathways. The garden's design is characterised by its geometric layout, symmetrical patterns, and ornamental features.

One of the most prominent structures within the garden is the Tour Magne. This tower is an ancient Roman structure that once served as part of the city's fortifications. It is believed to have been built during the 1st century BC and offers panoramic views of the surrounding area.

Another notable feature is the Temple of Diana, a Roman monument located within the garden. This temple dates back to the 2nd century AD and was dedicated to the goddess Diana, the Roman goddess of the hunt, the moon, and nature. It stands as a testament to the city's rich Roman heritage.

Over the years, the Jardin de la Fontaine has undergone various renovations and modifications while maintaining its historical character. It has become a popular destination for both locals and tourists, offering a serene and picturesque setting for relaxation, strolling, and exploring the city's past.

In conclusion, the Jardin de la Fontaine in Nîmes, France, is a captivating garden with a rich history that stretches back to Roman times. Its blend of ancient Roman structures, French formal garden design, and natural beauty makes it a must-visit attraction for history enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.
