Cuba day4: Trinidad to Topes de Collantes
After leaving Trinidad, we transferred to an old Russian military truck for the drive up to the Topes de Collantes Park in the Escambray Mountains. We did an 8km trek to Hacienda Gallega, and after lunch did a further 5km circular walk to the Salto de Rocio waterfall and swam in the river. We spent the night in tents.

On our way to the Valle de Viñales we came across the so-called 'pregnant women'-palm trees.
From a viewpoint on top of a hill we got an overview of the Viñales valley. Between the upright, limestone pillars (Mogotes) of this valley the best tobacco in the world is grown in the dark red, very fertile soil.
We also visited this Mural de la Prehistoria in the valley, which depicts the birth of the earth until the appearance of man. It is an open-air fresco 120 metres high and 160 metres wide, drawn on rocks from the Jura period. A drawing found on the Internet allows one to see more clearly what is to be seen. It all looked rather touristic
A tobacco farmer explained how to grow, ferment, dry and sort the tobacco leaves that are usually processed elsewhere in Cuba into quality cigars such as Cohiba and Montecristo. He told us the whole process and he had kept a number of leaves with which he managed to create some neat cigars. In those cigars of course the flame went and so we got a smoky whole.
Close by we visited La Cueva del Indio or translated 'The cave of the Indian'. It was only discovered in 1920. Several remains of the first inhabitants were found here. You can see all kinds of stalagmites and tits and all kinds of shapes. You can explore part of the cave on foot, after which you get on a motorboat. You then sail up the river San Vincente. In some places the cave is 90 meters high. The best part is when you sail out through the rocks.

El pico Husillo ????
Cerros de Fomento, formación única de su tipo en el mundo
Sancti Spíritus, Cuba.- Los Cerros de Fomento, ubicados en las alturas de Santa Clara, caracterizan al municipio del que toman su nombre, en la parte más occidental de la provincia de Sancti Spíritus, por ser una formación única de su tipo en el mundo.
Localizado a 10 kilómetros al Sur de la cabecera municipal, el majestuoso paisaje, lleno de los más diversos tonos de verde y carmelita, es un verdadero regalo a la vista y un paraíso donde habitan 287 especies plantas, de ellas 33 endémicas entre las que se puede citar el meló cactus guitartii.
Esta es una cadena de elevaciones litológicas estructurales, constituidas por rocas volcánicas, brechas y calizas del período cretácico, que al presentar laderas muy verticales y cimas aplanadas le dan un aspecto peculiar.
Piedra Gorda de Fomento
Este es el caso de la Piedra Gorda, con sus 298 metros de altura, que junto al Pico Husillo y las gemelas sobresalen por su belleza y formas realmente caprichosas.

Dentro de las Alturas de lo Cerros se comenzó a explotar una mina de cobre en 1916 pero años más tarde fue cerrada por los propietarios debido a causas desconocidas y en la década de los 60 se hundió.
También el Pico Husillo sobresale en forma de aguja y cilindro que guarda gran semejanza con las elevaciones volcánicas residuales junto a su vegetación de bosque semidesnudo.
La singularidad y belleza de este relieve, unido a las especies únicas y otras en peligro de extinción, llevaron a declarar Las Alturas de los Cerros Monumento Local y sitio natural para mantener en ellos una constante conservación a favor del medio ambiente.

Cayo Santa María (Cay or Key of Santa Maria) is an island off Cuba's north central coast in the Jardines del Rey archipelago. The island is linked by road and bridge to the town of Caibarién on the main island. Cayo Santa María is well known for its white sand beaches and luxury all inclusive resorts.
The island is linked to the mainland near Caibarién by a 48 km causeway constructed between 1989 and 1999 by Campaña de Las Villas. The island is administered as part of Caibarién, a municipality of Villa Clara Province.

Varadero is a resort town in the province of Matanzas, Cuba, and one of the largest resort areas in the Caribbean.
Varadero is best known as a tourist resort town, with more than 20 km of white sandy beaches. The first tourists visited Varadero as early as the 1870s, and for years it was considered an elite resort. In 1910 the annual rowing regatta was started; five years later the first hotel, named Varadero, which later was renamed as Club Nautico, was built. Tourism grew in the early 1930s as Irénée du Pont, an American millionaire, built his estate on the peninsula (now Maison Xanadu or DuPont House). Many famous and infamous people stayed in Varadero, for example: Al Capone.
After the Cuban Revolution in 1959, many mansions were expropriated from their rich owners. These mansions soon became museums. As a symbol of the new integrated tourism for Cubans and foreign visitors of all social classes, the Park of the 8000 Cubicles (Parque de las 8000 Taquillas) was built in 1960.
SANTA CLARA (source Wikipedia):
Santa Clara is the capital city of the Cuban province of Villa Clara. It is located in the most central region of the province and almost in the most central region of the country. With a population near a quarter million, Santa Clara is the 5th largest Cuban city by population.
Santa Clara was the site of the last battle in the Cuban Revolution in late 1958. There were two guerrilla columns that attacked the city, one led by Ernesto Che Guevara and the other led by Camilo Cienfuegos. Guevara's column first captured the garrison at Fomento. Then, using a bulldozer, Guevara's soldiers destroyed railroad tracks and derailed a train full of troops and supplies sent by Batista. On December 31, 1958, the combined forces of Guevara and Cienfuegos (along with other revolutionaries under William Alexander Morgan) attacked Santa Clara. The battle was chaotic, the defenders were demoralized, some fought, others surrendered without a shot. By the afternoon, the city was captured. This victory for Castro's troops is seen as the decisive moment in the Cuban Revolution as Batista fled Cuba less than 12 hours later.

Con la llegada del siglo XX la urbanización de Fomento comienza, ya que hasta ese entonces existían en el pueblo dos calles verdaderamente, La Real y Desengaño, el poblado se extendía de lo que es hoy la intersección de las calles Céspedes y Martí (Real y Masagué) con la antigua Desengaño (actual Juan Bravo) hasta Real y López Cacho (actual Céspedes y María de la Caridad Martínez), quedando bordeado el pueblo por propiedades particulares. Por interés de algunos vecinos dueños de fincas de urbanizar, vendieron y en algunos casos cedieron terrenos propios con el objetivo de abrir nuevas calles y crear manzanas, tal es el caso del rico propietario Don Pedro Massagué, que en 1990 donó los terrenos para la creación del actual Parque Municipal y una franja de tierra que abarca la intersección de las actuales calles Céspedes y Martí con Juan Bruno Zayas hasta la salida de Cabaiguán; en este último caso esta franja fue dada a propietarios particulares para que construyeran sus viviendas con la condición de abrir las cuatro esquinas, tal es el ejemplo de la manzana donde se encuentra ubicado el cine Silvino Aguila y la casa de la Familia Gómez, así como la cuadra donde se encuentra el PCC Municipal.

Santa Clara, capital of the province of Villa Clara, is a must-see stop on your way through this region of central Cuba. The city was founded in 1689 by several families commemorated by a monument formed by columns located in the plaza of the Iglesia del Carmen (Church of Carmen). In 1692 it grew rapidly after a colossal fire emptied the streets of Remedios, causing the population to move to Santa Clara.
City had a very prominent participation in the fight for independence, during the Ten Years' War and the Cuban Revolution. For better context of the latter, in December 1958 the Battle of Santa Clara was fought and the provincial capital was taken militarily by the commander Ernesto Che Guevara. Not surprisingly, for all its history of war and guerrilla warfare, this city is known by the nickname Ciudad Liberal (Free City). Santa Clara is all history, and in the case of Cuba this translates into revolutionary history. You will be able to find here the Mausoleo del Che Guevara (Mausoleum of the Che Guevara), constructed in honour of the guerrilla and the Museo del Tren Armado (Armored Train Museum), where you will be able to see the authentic train that the rebels occupied. Without a doubt, Santa Clara is a city not to be missed for all that it represents.
