Beautiful Foix in the South of France

Foix and the Region
In the South of France, more precisely in the Occitanie region, is Foix, a rather small, historical town.
Very typical of the South, the downtown features lots of trees – People spend time outside, and they look for some shade as it gets quite hot in the summer months.
Narrow streets are winding up everywhere all the way to the castle. So, the access to the castle is directly from the old downtown and you can walk to it – You don’t have to drive. Plus, it adds a tremendous impact to the downtown life and general feeling.
The medieval castle dominates the old town and also overlooks the newer parts of town.
If you ever go there, I recommend you take the tour. It is very comprehensive and interesting, but for the moment, I will let you take a peek through these few pictures.
We are now leaving Foix, on the way to Montsegur, in the Cathar country.
Montsegur is a very quaint village – quiet, remote, with some very traditional food in the only restaurant that was open on that day.
Above Montsegur is the chateau de Montsegur, the cradle of Catharism in France in the 13th century.
600 people lived there, on that site. It was a rather safe refuge for this large community, persecuted by the church. Ultimately, more than 200 perished, burnt alive because of their own religious beliefs – a very tragic end… a tragic page of the history book.

Please leave a comment, make some suggestions on some subjects that you would like me to develop, and give me a thumb up to keep these videos coming.
Last but not least, remember to visit my website, travel, speak French, read my blog, SHOP… There is so much to do on VoilaByCoco.com.

Foix is a commune, the former capital of the County of Foix. Today it is the Préfecture of the Ariège department in southwestern France in the Occitanie region. It is the second least populous administrative centre of a department in all of France, the least-populous being Privas.

Foix - France

Welcome to Foix

Foix (French pronunciation: [fwa]; Occitan: Fois [ˈfujs, ˈfujʃ]; Catalan: Foix [ˈfoʃ]) is a commune, the former capital of the County of Foix. It is the capital of the department of Ariège as it is the seat of the Préfecture of that department. Foix is located in the Occitanie region of southwestern France. It is the second least populous French departmental capital, the least populous being Privas. Foix lies south of Toulouse, close to the borders with Spain and Andorra.

As of 2019, the city had a population of 9,493. It is only the second biggest town in Ariège, the biggest being Pamiers, which is one of the two sub-prefectures, the other being St Girons. Foix is twinned with the English cathedral city of Ripon, with the Spanish towns of Sarroca de Lleida and Lerida and the Andorran capital Andorre-la-Vieille.

FOIX ????

Transcript:
Occitanie is a region in South-West France. Its capital is Toulouse, the fourth biggest city in France, behind Paris, Marseille and Lyon.
The symbol of Occitanie is the Occitan Cross, the banner of arms of the Counts of Toulouse. You can see it everywhere in the region, but the biggest of these is in the Place du Capitole, in front of Le Capitole, the city hall and its most iconic building. You can visit the Capitole for free. Originally built in 1190, the current building dates from 1750 and the entire building is built from the area’s signature pink bricks. These bricks can be seen all over the city and is the reason why Toulouse is known as La Ville Rose, or The Pink City.
A city has existed on this spot since The Iron Age. Gauls, Romans and then the Franks inhabited its ever-changing streets and it became the capital of Aquitaine. Its position, on the French side of the Pyrenees, was pivotal in protecting France from the Spanish and also its Moorish occupiers.
In fact, had the French lost the Battle of Toulouse in 721 and the Battle of Poitiers in 732, then the History of Europe might have been very different indeed. The Umayyad Caliphate had occupied Spain in 711 and had been pushing North ever since, but their defeat in these two battles halted their progress and kept the Muslim civilisation on the Western side of the Pyrenees permanently. Since then, Toulouse flourished as an important Christian city, with scores of ambitious churches and monasteries built amongst its medieval streets.
Nearby is the beautiful town of Albi. The home of famed painter Toulouse Lautrec, the medieval old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Sitting on the River Tarn, its vast cathedral looms high above the town. Reportedly the largest brick building in the entire world, the cathedral was built as a statement of Catholic dominance after the destruction of the Cathars and their religion, which had been dominant in the region until they were ousted in the thirteenth century.
Next we head to Cahors, another medieval town, this time sitting inside a U-bend of the Lot River. The Valantre Bridge is one of several known as Devil’s Bridges, meaning that when it was built, people were so amazing by its technical achievement, they believed it could not possibly have been conceived or built by human’s. Subsequently, people thought it was built by the Devil himself. Which it was, obviously. The city itself also had a fairly devilish reputation as it famously allowed bankers to charge interest on its loans, which used to be known as the sin of usury by the church. Which is why Cahors is mentioned in Dante’s Inferno alongside Sodom as an example of cities of absolute sin.
Which we didn’t we headed to Foix, near to the border with Andora. A town centred around a rather impressive castle atop a rocky hill, it has been inhabited since the Romans built a fort there. Charlemagne founded the town itself and the castle was inhabited by Counts of Foix for centuries, until one them, Henry Navarre, was crowned Henry IV of France. And Henry IV is, like, a BIG deal in France because he ended the War between Catholics and Protestants by signing the Edict of Nantes. He was assassinated by a fanatical Catholic for doing so… But his legacy remained, nonetheless.
Our final stop is the glorious fortified city of Carcassonne. Yet another UNESCO World Heritage Site, the citadel is a vast and sprawling medieval walled city that sat on the border between France and Aragon. Evolving from a small castle to the stone behemoth it is today, it has two concentric fortified walls and then a castle inside that. There are 53 towers in Carcassonne. One of which was the Inquisition Tower, where the Catholic Inquisition tortured anyone who didn’t ascribe to their beliefs. Which was a particularly relevant here, because Carcassonne was originally a stronghold of the Cathars. Make sure you head out onto the walls themselves to get the best views over the city and the landscape surrounding it.

Foix is a commune, the former capital of the County of Foix. Today it is the Préfecture of the Ariège department in southwestern France in the Occitanie region. The Romans built a fort on the rocky hill where the Château de Foix castle now overlooks the town.
The original Chateau de Foix was built before the tenth century (it was mentioned in Roger 1st will when he bequeathed this amazing chateaux to his youngest son Bernard). Seated on top of a small hill this astounding piece of architecture is essential viewing on your visit here: the chateaux has undergone recent renovation and is the jewel of the town.

Unlike many castles, the tourist authority have also provided abundant information for visitors and offer self-guided recorded visits in many languages. Whether you’re a count, a knight a fair maiden, or a parent looking for activities for the kids, you’ll be sure to step back in time at a visit to this fortress.

Since 1930, the castle has housed the Ariège departmental museum. Sections on prehistory, Gallo-Roman and mediaeval archaeology that tell the history of the Ariège from ancient times have been created with amazing taste. The museum has organised exhibits to concentrate on the history of the castle site so as to recreate the life of Foix at the time of the Counts.

Maggie's First Time Skiing, & More Adventures Near Foix, France!

Timmy had a week-long break from classes, so we decided it was time for another fabulous adventure! We wanted to stay close to Toulouse, so we chose the adorable mountain village of Foix, in the region of Ariège.

Even in the winter (although, we wouldn't exactly call 65F degrees winter...), there was so much to do! I had never been skiing before, so we decided it was time for me to hit the slopes for the first time. Spoiler alert: I suck at it! All was not lost, however, we still had a great time. We also went on a couple of fantastic short hikes in the Pyrénées, toured the biggest cave in Europe, and ate tons of great food. Not shown here: we also treated ourselves to a day at the thermal baths in Ax-Les-Thermes (Les Bains du Couloubret), complete with very French massages. This was the perfect way to end our week of activities. Enjoy!
