Southwest, in Firminy, the Le Corbusier Site, designed by the namesake architect, includes a stadium and the asymmetrical Maison de la Culture. Saint Etienne is a city in eastern central France, in the Massif Central, 55 km (34 mi) southwest of Lyon in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, on the trunk road that connects Toulouse with Lyon. Saint-Étienne is the capital of the Loire department and has a population of approximately 172,023 (2013) in the city itself and over 508,000 in the metropolitan area (2011).

Named after Saint Stephen, the city first appears in the historical record in the Middle Ages as Saint-Étienne de Furan (after the River Furan, a tributary of the Loire). In the 13th century, it was a small borough around the church dedicated to Saint Etienne. On the upper reaches of the Furan, near the Way of St. James, the Abbey of Valbenoîte had been founded by the cistercians in 1222. In the late 15th century, it was a fortified village defended by walls built around the original nucleus.

The city's football club AS Saint-Étienne has won the Ligue 1 title a record ten times, achieving most of their success in the 1970s. British indie-dance band Saint Etienne named themselves after the club. St. Étienne has many sports stadiums, the largest being Stade Geoffroy-Guichard used for football and Stade Henri-Lux for athletics. St. Étienne was the capital of the French bicycle industry. The bicycle wheel manufacturer Mavic is based in the city and frame manufacturers Motobécane and Vitus are also based here. The city often hosts a stage of the Tour de France. St. Étienne resident Thierry Gueorgiou is a world champion in orienteering. The local rugby union team is CA Saint-Étienne Loire Sud Rugby.

The nearest airport is Saint-Étienne - Bouthéon Airport which is located in Andrézieux-Bouthéon, 12 km (7.46 mi) north-northwest of Saint-Étienne. The main railway station is Gare de Saint-Étienne-Châteaucreux, which offers high speed services to Paris, Lyon (Saint-Étienne–Lyon railway), and several regional lines.Saint-Étienne is also notable for its tramway (Saint-Étienne tramway) – which uniquely with Lille, it kept throughout the 20th century – and its trolleybus system (Saint-Étienne trolleybus system) – which is one of only three such systems currently operating in France.

Bus and tram transport is regulated and provided by the Société de Transports de l'Agglomération Stéphanoise (STAS), a public transport executive organisation. The bicycle sharing system Vélivert with 280 short term renting bicycles has been available since June 2010.

Places to see in ( Annecy - France ) Church of St Francis

Places to see in ( Annecy - France ) Church of St Francis

The church Saint-François , called church of the Italians , is a catholic church located in Annecy in Haute-Savoie (France). It is in the old town, opposite the Palais de l'Isle. The church was built in 1614 in Baroque style. It sheltered the tombs of Jeanne de Chantal and François de Sales, then transferred to the Basilica of the Visitation. Under the French Revolution , the church is transformed into a factory. She was worshiped in 1923 and restored in 2003

Set on high ground, overlooking lake Annecy, it was a lovely place to spend some peaceful time. Surrounded by lovely flower beds and the town war memorial, the church of Church of St Francis and the whole town had a wonderful loved and cared for feel to them.

This lovely Franciscan church in the heart of Annecy has a refreshing lack of grandeur and splendour. Instead it offers a glorious history of devotion to God in a truly meaningful and spiritually uplifting manner. Come here and be still.

Chapelle Notre-Dame-du-Haut à Ronchamp

In building this church, we wanted to create a place of silence, prayer, peace, and inner joy. - Le Corbusier

It is built on the top of a small mountain in a small rural village in eastern France, and looking at the quiet and peaceful rural scenery in all directions makes you feel solemn. Longchamp, famous for the ‘Chapelle Notre-Dame-du-Haut’ by ‘Le Corbusier’, who is revered as the father of modern architecture and the greatest architect of the 20th century, is a small town with a developed mining industry.

The chapel, located on a 472m high hill overlooking the surrounding lush forest, was designated as a UNESCO cultural heritage site in 2016 for its lighting, shape, and unique spatial beauty. It is a masterpiece that combines the philosophy and aesthetics of architect 'Le Corbusier' and is admired by those who study architecture. It is a pilgrimage site.

Le Corbusier effect | FULL DOCUMENTARY

Born in Firminy in 1963 at the heart of the largest ensemble designed by Le Corbusier in Europe, Gilles Coudert spent part of his adolescence frequenting the sports complex, the swimming pool, the Maison de la Culture, the housing units and the church that make up this unique architectural ensemble.

The use of these spaces and buildings of surprising forms brought to life by Le Corbusier enabled him to apprehend the notions of architecture, urbanism and design, ignited his awareness of shape, material, color, and provoked in him an aesthetic and functional questioning that most likely prompted him to later integrate the Saint-Etienne School of Fine Arts.

Many contemporary creators, artists, architects, choreographers, filmmakers, designers, composers also refer to the works, the methodology or the figure of the architect in a rapport alternately aesthetic and political, laudatory or critical, which testifies of a renewed interest if not a fascination for the Modern Movement through the most iconic of its representatives.

Gilles Coudert has obtained the testimonies of these creators, questioned their personal relationship with Le Corbusier, and especially the manner in which they reinterpret this relationship in their respective fields, to create a work. In order to verify why a renewed interest in architecture and the architect's thought seem more relevant than ever, Gilles Coudert also interrogates the architectural historian Jean-Louis Cohen, as well as meeting residents and users that claim an influence in their own way, a filiation or a critical position vis-à-vis the architect, his work and his spirit.

The architectural works of Le Corbusier are classified as UNESCO World Heritage since July 2016.

Documentary: Corbusier Effect
Directed by: Gilles Coudert
