Explore the Beautiful French Pilgrimage Walk GR65 - Part 3: Figeac to Cahors @highbanks.pilgrim
The 3rd of 4 videos that describe a walk from Le Puy en Velay to the Spanish border at St. Jean Pied de Port. The mood of my first video was set by the wild and lonely Aubrac plateau. In my second video the mood changed as I walked through the beautifully preserved villages of the Lot River valley and on to Conques and Figeac. In this, my third video, the mood changes again as I leave Figeac to walk the vertiginous cliffs of the Cele River valley. The route eventually rejoins the Lot river and passes through another one of France’s designated ‘Les plus beaux villages en France’, the cliff-hanging St. Cirq-Lapopie, before continuing on to Cahors with its famous medieval bridge. The map that I use at the end of the video is from the Confraternity of St. James in the UK from whom I have written permission.
The route from Le Puy is one of France’s oldest medieval pilgrimage routes to Spain and links up with the famous el Camino, which crosses Northwest Spain to Santiago de Compostela. Thousands of pilgrims walked the route at great personal risk throughout the Middle Ages and the churches and hostels they visited are still there. The route was rediscovered and re-developed by volunteers several decades ago and is now one of France’s best loved long distance hiking paths. Hundreds of modern day pilgrims walk it each year and stay in the route’s network of pilgrim hostels or Gites. See my video for more information on the pilgrim’s passport or credential.
Ambitious walkers can finish this route, which is about 740 km, and pick up the el Camino at St. Jean Pied de Port or Roncesvalles in Spain, to continue to Santiago.

The second of 4 videos that describe a walk from Le Puy en Velay to the Spanish border at St Jean Pied de Port. This video covers the portion starting from St Come, passing several beautiful villages along the Lot River, then on to the Romanesque abbey church at Conques, with its famous tympanum, and finishes at Figeac. My first video in this series covered the wild and lonely Aubrac plateau. The mood changes in this video as I pass through a series of beautifully preserved French villages in verdant countryside. The map I use is from the Confraternity of St. James in the UK, from whom I have written permission. The walk was completed pre-Covid.

Enjoy the amazing view of France. We explored, cahors, figeac, & rocamadour. It was the new year’s holiday.
The only negative I can say is , you will have difficulty in finding place to eat, as it was holidays, no restaurants open. Especially January 1.
We went to Rocamadour in 31st of December , there were only like 3-4 restaurants open, and there were many tourists. So there was a big queue as everyone wants to eat lunch. And the worst is the January 1 all those small towns or villages were really close. It looked like a dead town. #travel #France #explore

Beautiful Figeac, France A Town of Art and History
Marine Steve and I did visit Figeac for several days 7 years ago and take a fast walk around this time. Town has a huge, friendly Tourist Office. Make them your first stop for maps, and information about the entire Lot Valley, what to see and what to do.
Legend has the origin of Figeac is due to Pepin the Short - love his name. Figeac is named a Town of Art and History; only awarded to places with an exceptionally rich architectural/historical heritage plus determination to conserve and enhance. Beautiful little town. (Apologize for the power washing noise in the background.)

Continuamos nuestra ruta en coche por occitania, en esta ocasion haremos una visita fugaz al castillo de Bournazel, declarado monumento historico francés. Privado y bastante celoso de sus secretos, pues ni nos dejaron grabar dentro, ni he encontrado muchas fotos en internet de su interior. Despues haremos la ultima parada del dia en sur de Francia pueblos como por ejemplo donde nos alojaremos, en Figeac (o Fijac) Lugar de origen del egiptologo Champollion, quien descifro los secretos de los jeroglificos gracias a la piedra rosetta. Occitanie aun nos guarda sorpresas y lugares increibles por delante, aunque hemos pasado el ecuador de este particular road trip por los pueblos del sur de francia.
