Matera About this sound listen (help·info) is a town and a province in the region of Basilicata, in southern Italy. It is the capital of the province of Matera.
Apart from an economy which has traditionally been based on agriculture, in the late 1990s the major economic base of Matera, and of surrounding cities, is the production of upholstered furniture.
The town lies athwart a small canyon, which has been eroded in the course of years by a small stream, the Gravina.

L’Abbazia benedettina di San Michele Arcangelo è situata nel centro storico di Montescaglioso, in provincia di Matera, ed è il luogo topico della sua storia, uno dei principali della Basilicata, iconico e maestoso col suo campanile e, all’interno, con le arcate del suo chiostro e i suoi due bellissimi cortili. La costruzione fu completata nel 1099 ma, per quanto non esistano date precise, la fondazione si ipotizza che risalga all’anno 893.

Matera is a town and a province in the region of Basilicata, in southern Italy. It is the capital of the province of Matera.
Apart from an economy which has traditionally been based on agriculture, in the late 1990s the major economic base of Matera, and of surrounding cities, is the production of upholstered furniture.
The town lies athwart a small canyon, which has been eroded in the course of years by a small stream, the Gravina.
Matera has gained international fame for its ancient town, the Sassi di Matera (meaning stones of Matera). The Sassi originate from a prehistoric (troglodyte) settlement, and are suspected to be some of the first human settlements in Italy.
The Sassi are houses dug into the tuff rock itself, which is characteristic of Basilicata and Apulia. Many of these houses are really only caverns, and the streets in some parts of the Sassi often are located on the rooftops of other houses. The ancient town grew in height on one slope of the ravine created by a river that is now a small stream. The ravine is known locally as la Gravina.
In the 1950s, the government of Italy forcefully relocated most of the population of the Sassi to areas of the developing modern city. However, people continued to live in the Sassi, and according to the English Fodor's guide:
Matera is the only place in the world where people can boast to be still living in the same houses of their ancestors of 9,000 years ago.
Until the late 1980s this was considered an area of poverty, since these houses were, and in most areas still are, mostly unlivable. Current local administration, however, has become more tourism-oriented, and has promoted the re-generation of the Sassi with the aid of the European Union, the government, UNESCO, and Hollywood. Today there are many thriving businesses, pubs, and hotels.

One of the benefits of the ancient city, is that there is a great similarity in the look of the Sassi with that of ancient sites in and around Jerusalem. This has caught the eye of film directors and movie studios. ( source Wikipedia )

La città di Ferrandina sorge a circa 482 m s.l.m. sulla sponda occidentale della valle del Basento. È un piccolo gioiello della provincia di Matera, ricco di scorci affascinanti, come i suoi vicoli rossi e bianchi, spesso ornati di fiori. La storia di Ferrandina ha inizio nel 1000 a.C. con la Magna Grecia. Il suo antico nome era, infatti, Troilia, in onore della città di Troia; nel tempo, divenne un importante centro romano e normanno. La sua attuale denominazione si deve a Federico d’Aragona, che cambiò il nome in Ferrandina, in onore di suo padre Re Ferrante d’Aragona.

Matera, una delle città abitate più antiche del mondo. Conosciuta come città dei Sassi e proclamata patrimonio dell'UNESCO nel 1993 e anche capitale europea della cultura 2019. Un giorno a Matera tra la gravina e un paesaggio da togliere il fiato.

La visita di Matera può iniziare da piazza Vittorio Veneto, cuore del centro cittadino, da lì conviene salire anzitutto verso il rione Civita, il più antico della città, in cima al quale si erge il Duomo del XIII secolo in stile romanico-pugliese, a cui recenti lavori hanno restituito l'antico splendore..
Tornati alla piazza principale può iniziare la visita ai due famosi quartieri trogloditici, in un percorso circolare che parte a sinistra verso il Sasso Barisano da dove, percorrendo la strada tortuosa che costeggia la gola del torrente Gravina, si raggiunge il Sasso Caveoso per poi risalire verso piazzetta Pascoli. Da qui inizia il corso , cioè il passeggio cittadino che termina in piazza Vittorio Veneto.
Un percorso abbastanza impegnativo che può occupare anche una intera giornata fra vicoli e scalinate, un continuo saliscendi fra case imbiancate a calce, molte con l'usura del tempo, poste su vari livelli e talvolta scavate nella roccia, spesso sovrapposte l'un l'altra in modo che i tetti servano da strade, in un groviglio apparentemente inestricabile.
Qua e là vi è qualche segnale turistico ma non un vero e proprio percorso consigliato per cui, se non siete accompagnati da una guida, dovete affidarvi ad una mappa della città oltre che al vostro spirito di scoperta.....in ogni caso non abbiate fretta perchè dietro ad ogni angolo potreste trovare qualcosa di sorprendente.
I Sassi di Matera sono Patrimonio Unesco fin dal 1993.
Un punto di osservazione che consiglio a chi visita Matera è il belvedere posto al di là della gola rocciosa solcata dal torrente Gravina (nel video è all'inizio della parte giorno), un belvedere raggiungibile in auto dal quale si può ammirare nel suo insieme la città vecchia ed entrambi i Sassi.
