Fern Canyon Hike | Prairie Creek Redwood State and National Park
Fern Canyon is one of the most popular trails in Prairie Creek Redwood State and National Parks. Featured prominently in The Lost World: Jurassic Park Fern Canyon has been called an unforgettable natural wonder by famed filmmaker Stephen Spielberg.
The hike throught Fern Canyon is among the most family-friendly hikes in the national park system. However, if you plan to visit and explore Fern Canyon then you can combine you visit it Fern Canyon with the James Irvine Trail, and or the Miner's Ridge Trail for an absolutely sublime 13 mile hike through California's Redwood Forest.
But if you are concerned about the distance or the difficulty then you can access the Fern Canyon Trail via the Davison Road. Be advised, this is a very popular trail and the parking area fills up during the summer months by 10 am. The Davison Road is also unpaved and low-clearance vehicles often get stuck. The Davison Raod is also not appropriate for RVs and vehicles towing trailers.
Also be advised that dogs are not permited on any trail in Prairie Creek State Park, this includes Fern Canyon. Dogs are not allowed.
Trailhead: Fern Canyon parking area or Prairie Creek Visitor Center (James Irvine Trail loop.
Difficulty: Easy or moderate
Distance: One mile or 13 miles when combined with James Irvine and Miner's Ridge trails.
Elevation gain: 150 ft

We are moving farther up the coast. The Redwoods were inland. The 101 took us around the Lost Coast and made its way back to the ocean. We landed in Trinidad, CA. There are a lot of really cool places to explore here. We took the drive to Fern Canyon. We heard this was one place we had to visit. Good thing we arrived when we did. When we left in the late morning, the place was packed. Cars were lined up parked along the side of the narrow road for at least a half a mile.

Fern Canyon Hike in Redwoods National Park
Fern Canyon is one of the best 1-mile trails in all of California. The hike is in Praire Creek Redwoods State Park and Redwoods National Park and it features a stunning canyon covered in ferns and with beautiful trees surrounding it. Getting to the trail is a little tough but it is worth the adventure to see such a beautiful spot that was featured in movies like Jurassic Park 2: The Lost World. Fern Canyon, Redwood National and State Parks, 2021
Another weekend in the Redwoods! This time we left the RV behind and took the car so we could head to Fern Canyon. Famous for being included in Jurassic Park: The Lost World, Fern Canyon is a narrow vertical rock wall canyon which is covered in ferns. We visited in winter and there was a rain storm the night before we arrived. This made the drive there interesting (see the creek crossing), and made for some very soggy hiking.
An absolutely spectacular view, especially with all the waterfalls and dripping water on the canyon walls after the storm! A must see if visiting the Redwoods.

Fern Canyon Redwood 4k ???????? Walk Tour !
Enjoy my Fern Canyon Virtual Hike in 4k !
Located in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park, it takes a bit of work to get to the North Coast gem known as Fern Canyon, but it’s worth it. From Highway 101 at Orick, drive unpaved Davison Road 10 miles to this spectacular canyon, a hidden paradise of ferns lining a narrow gorge carved out by Home Creek. Some of the seven different types of ferns clinging to the steep cliffs are ancient species, with ancestry tracing back 325 million years. Living underneath their leafy shade are some eye-catching amphibians, including Pacific giant salamanders, which can measure nearly a foot in length, and northern red-legged frogs.
The trail follows a series of small footbridges (installed in summer) deep into the canyon. Lush, drooping ferns create hanging gardens, miniature waterfalls pour down rock faces, and moss wallpapers every surface. The walls grow taller and squeeze tighter as you travel.
Are you experiencing déjà vu? Steven Spielberg filmed a Jurassic Park II scene within this canyon. Every curve and turn leads to another Instagram-it-now (if there were reception) view. Far too soon, the trail curves left and ascends out of the canyon, then loops back to the parking lot. More than a few Fern Canyon hikers opt to retrace their steps instead of continuing on the loop—it’s just too hard to leave this special place.

UNEXPECTED Destinations in REDWOOD NATIONAL PARK! Fern Canyon, Prairie Creek SP and Lady Bird Loop
Finding the Unexpected Destinations in Redwood National Park - You can't skip Fern Canyon when you visit Redwood National and State Parks! After you check out the tallest redwoods in the world at Prairie Creek State Park and the Lady Bird Johnson Trails!
We expected to find Redwood tress at Redwood National Park, but we had no idea how big they really are. You see a ton of pictures with people circled around the trunks, but it's hard to really grasp their size until you are right next to them!
I made sure to get an up close look at the bark and leaves of a redwood so you can really see what these tall giants are like. (I found it super interesting so hopefully you do too!)
After getting our fill of the large trees hiking the Prairie Creek trails and the Lady Bird Johnson Trail we took the drive to Fern Canyon.
Fern Canyon is down an 8 mile stone road but be prepared to go 10-15 miles per hour and to maneuver around oncoming traffic. The drive took us 30 minutes each way. But it was worth it!
Fern Canyon is straight out of Jurassic Park- literally! They filmed part of the Jurassic Park the Lost World in Fern Canyon and it was easy to see why. We spent twice as long in the canyon as we expected. It was amazing to see the ferns growing vertical along the canyon walls. Such an amazing way to end our time at Redwoods National Park!

Hiking the Fern Canyon Loop Trail
Pacific Northwest Trip: Part 10
Located in Prairie Creek Redwoods SP, run by Redwood National and State Parks, THIS PLACE IS AMAZING!!!
There were Elk on the way in, banana slugs above the canyon, Elk on the beach, and so much beautiful scenery I didn't know how to stop filming.
The Gold Bluffs Beach Day Use Area is accessed down a long dirt road. There are a couple water crossings before you get to the final trailhead, so be ready for that.
The hike itself isn't too long. It's hiking in a stream(Home Creek) through a canyon with ferns and waterfalls lining the walls. There is some minor scrambling to get around some fallen trees but nothing too crazy. At the end of the canyon there are steps leading up to the rim where you begin the hike back to the trailhead.
We opted to check out the Pacific Ocean, the beach, the bluffs, and a herd of elk on the dunes. It was a really memorable adventure!
James Irvine Trail to Fern Canyon through Giant Redwoods
Join us on the hike to Fern Canyon on the James Irvine Trail in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park in California. The canyon was the setting for a scene in Jurassic Park! The trail meanders through towering redwood trees before arriving at the stunning Fern Canyon, a forest stream canyon whose walls are covered in lush ferns.
At the end of the canyon, the trail continues and pops out at the ocean. The redwoods + fern canyon + ocean combination makes this one of the most spectacular hikes we have ever done.
It starts at the Prairie Creek Visitor Center, right around the corner from the Elk Prairie Campground. Since it's a long hike, and a long drive (~6.5 hours from Portland, ~6 hours from San Francisco), we camped the night before so we could start the hike in the morning.

Hello everyone from Elkhart, Indiana!
The road trip has come to an end, and now it's the time to start working on all the videos. I'll be uploading a couple a week at least for the next few weeks if the connection allows: it's very, very slow here.
I wish I could give you more updates using that shiny new YouTube feature called community, but looks like it's limited to bigger channels for now. Oh well.
Anyway, in today's episode, the #11 of this series, we visit the Fern Canyon, in the Redwoods National and State Parks, in beautiful and rainy Northern California. My attempt to capture this place on film was a big failure, but I still wanted to show you how.
I'm experimenting with a new format here, since I didn't talk much to the camera during these videos. Sorry, some of them were new places to me and I had my mind somewhere else! So I talk a bit at the beginning of the video, I play a montage, and then I talk about the photos a bit more. Hope you like it!

Fern Canyon, Redwood National and State Parks California
Fern Canyon within the Redwood State Park Section, Davison Road. This is a film Location for Jurassic Park II scene where man is killed by little dinosaurs, in the stream. It's an easy 10 minute hike from parking area. $8 entrance fee. You should use 4x4 or high clearance vehicle to get there, steep dirt road lots of potholes. 8 miles of dirt roads, go slow.
