Why is the Gambia called “The Smiling Coast”?
It is because of its location on the map of Africa. The country cuts through the middle of Senegal and its position appears like that of a smile on the map.
It is one of the friendliest places to explore within the region. The people are warm and hospitable, and the beautiful beaches will certainly make you smile.
Where should you stay in the Gambia?
Book a beach hotel. The success of your trip largely depends on where you stay.
What should you expect?
1. Gambia is a small country; not a rich one, therefore, manage your expectations.
2. Gambians are courteous and they are also hustlers.
3. Activities within the capital city would involve visiting Arch 22 and its museum, learning about the history - particularly slavery, visiting the fine beaches, and exploring the food culture. To experience more of Gambia, take a trip to the countryside.
4. English is widely spoken.
5. The sunny beaches will be the highlight of your stay.

Banjul is the capital city of the Gambia, a small West African country bordered by Senegal. The city sits on an island where the Gambia River meets the Atlantic Ocean. Its colonial buildings include the National Museum, dedicated to Gambian culture and history. Vendors at the lively Albert Market sell colorful textiles and local produce. The city's main entrance is marked by the immense, columned Arch 22 gateway.

Welcome to Farafenni or as the locals and its lovers would say: Chaku Bantang. It is a town of commerce and smiles. Farafenni: situated on the north bank of the River Gambia, and south of the Gambian border with Senegal. It has an old history of tolerance among natives despite the presence of many tribes.

Using my GoPro camera, I recorded my daily bike ride from my village to Farafenni. The commute is about 3.5km. The dirt/sand road is very bumpy so this video is very shaky. I'm greeting people as I pass them, and at the end, I reach my friend's food stall in Farafenni.

It is the centre of the eponymous administrative division, which is home to an estimated 400,000 residents, making it The Gambia's largest and most densely populated metropolitan area. Banjul is on St Mary's Island (Banjul Island), where the Gambia River enters the Atlantic Ocean. The population of the city proper is 31,301, with the Greater Banjul Area, which includes the City of Banjul and the Kanifing Municipal Council, at a population of 413,397 (2013 census). The island is connected to the mainland to the west and the rest of Greater Banjul Area via bridges. There are also ferries linking Banjul to the mainland at the other side of the river. From 19th Century to 1973, the city was known as Bathurst.

AFRICA - FROM GAMBIA TO DAKAR (FERRY) 4K
My solo travel to Dakar. Part I : Kololi - Banjul - Barra.
The Banjul to Barra Ferry Service is one of the Gambia capital's vital economic lifelines and an essential river crossing to Dakar (Senegal) the north bank wharf town of Barra Point in the Niumi District.The journey time from the terminal and across the mouth of the Gambia River estuary is about 35 minutes and services start from Banjul at 7 am and operate until 9 in the evening. Once you have paid and entered the departure terminal there is nothing in the way of refreshments and the toilet facilities leave a lot to be desired. So do be prepared. Keep your personal belonging close to you as there are pickpockets who specifically target ferry passengers. Should you wish to make the trip by pirogue then insist on being provided with a life jacket as this is a mandatory regulation.There are 3 boats in operation which are the 'Johe', 'Barra' and 'Kanilai' with departures taking place at intervals of every 30 minutes.
