Hasidic Jewish Community | South Williamsburg New York City | Walking Tour 4K

South Williamsburg has the largest Orthodox Jewish community in the United States. On Sunday 17 October 2021, I walked through the Hasidic Jewish community living in South Williamsburg, New York City. It was a sunny morning and full of people walking outdoors, Jewish Orthodox men and women with their children. South Williamsburg has the largest Orthodox Jewish community in the United States.

Abandoned Pines Resort in the Catskills Ny ... Closed for Over 2 Decades !!! #abandoned #catskills

The Pines is an abandoned Borscht Belt resort that began in the 1930s as a small mission style hotel called Moneka Lodge. The Borscht Belt, refers to a region of the Catskill Mountains that contained many Jewish resort hotels once popular with New York City Jews in the middle of the last century. Its original owners, Silverstein and Weiner, eventually sold the hotel to Harry Cohen and May Schweid in 1946 who renamed the establishment, Pines Hotel. Over the years and under various owners, the Pines grew into one of the largest hotels in the area. However, times changed and Borscht Belt hotels gradually fell out of fashion, leading to the closure of the Pines. Before closing, the resort had expanded to include 400 guest rooms, as well as nightlife, winter sports, and summer recreation facilities.

Recreational options included tennis, skiing, golf, swimming, and other outdoor activities. For entertainment, there were bars, a lounge, ballroom, card room (poker room), and a theater/nightclub. The nightclub hosted acts like Robert Goulet and Buddy Hackett. From what I’m told by those who used to visit the Borscht Belt resorts, many Jewish performers got their start at places like the Pines.

The Pines’ greatest period of expansion was between the 1940s and 1960s. In 1949 a new recreation building was constructed. In 1953 another hotel building was added, increasing the room count by an additional 35 units. The outdoor pool, was built in 1959 at a cost of $75,000. The New York Times described it as being shaped like a whale; however, others seem to think it looks like a heart. The bridge spanning the pool was included to link the cabanas on one side of the pool to the rooftop bar and “Bamboo Room” on the other side. According to the book Catskills Resorts Lost Architecture of Paradise, the hotel even saw such notable staff, as a young Gene Simmons of KISS who worked briefly as a lifeguard at the pool. Architect H.D. Phillips designed a new lobby, card room and indoor pool. They were modernist style structures built between 1959 and 1961. The new lobby was the main entrance where guests would enter through the lower level to check in before ascending the stairs to the second floor lobby that was connected to the indoor pool via the card room. In 1962 a 1,300-seat nightclub called the “Persian Room” was built along with the connected lounge “Wedgwood Room” and formal ballroom known as the “Viceroy Room”. In the mid-1960s convention rooms and additional guest room wings were added. These included the Savoy, Hampshire and Regency wings. Also added in the 60s were a nine-hole golf course and ice skating rink, as well as a ski chalet, and chair lift for skiing.

By the mid-1980s patronage of the Borscht Belt hotels was on the decline. In an effort to remain profitable the Pines Country Estates condos were developed on 40 acres of Pines’ land under the premise that owners would have access to the resort. In addition, the hotel resort hoped to capitalize on new legislation that would allow casino gambling in the Catskills. While the condos were built and still exist, the proposed gambling legislation didn’t pass, putting the final nail in the coffin. The Pines closed its doors in 1998.

After its closure, the Pines was purchased by a group of Hasidic Jews who intended to redevelop the hotel. However, the plans were in vain and the property remains abandoned. While I enjoyed videoing this place, it is pretty trashed. The Viceroy Room, Persian Room, Wedgewood Room, indoor pool, ice skating rink and café have been demolished. In addition, arsonists destroyed the Carleton and Ritz staff buildings. Scrappers have made off with anything of value, there is extensive water damage in many of the buildings and black mold abounds. It also looks like some of the buildings have been used for a paintball tournament. According to potential plans for the property include the development of 300 homes and re-opening the ski chalet and golf course.

As we were near the skating rink you can hear the trucks behind us by the ski lifts, hence we didnt venture up there since they were working.

Tunnel Behind a Waterfall!!! Horsehoe Mine Falls in Ellenville, NY

I first learned about Horseshoe Mine Falls with a mining tunnel behind it late last year. But also learning that I will have to wade in the pool if I wanted to photograph the waterfall from inside the tunnel, I decided to wait until the following spring when the temperatures warmed up.

So it’s late spring the following year and the waders I ordered finally arrived. I went to visit Horseshoe Mine Falls. I was not disappointed.

When I started hiking the Catskills and surrounding regions to photograph and film waterfalls more than a year ago, I thought of the activity more as “work” than “pleasure”. I got up early before sunrise and drove to a remote location over an hour away sometimes hiking for a mile or two and the night before I ran through a series of checklists making sure my cameras were in working order, the memory cards formatted, the batteries charged, and the drone’s firmware up-to-date, not to mention the research I did to know something of the place that I may say something worthwhile on video for the viewers to hear. I did not at all buy into a favorite quote among outdoor lovers attributed to naturalist John Muir saying, “the mountains are calling and I must go”. I did not consider myself to be among the flock. It was, for me, pure work.

And when I arrived at the waterfall, I had to decide where to position the cameras, where to launch the drone from, what to say about what I was seeing, and ultimately decide whether I have captured enough on video before I left. My mind was constantly on a future outcome instead of the present moment that my nature-tripping became obsessively “work” far removed from the “play” that it should have been.

But recently having found a new job, I became immersed in corporate work encased in steel, glass, and concrete looking after the company’s bottom-line. My mind was constantly dialed to a future outcome. I was left with little time and energy if at all for spontaneous activities like the nature-tripping I used to do.

Yet two months in to my work, I began to feel a longing for the outdoors. I will drive past the woods and see the mountains in the distance and from somewhere within me a pang of desire would surge wanting to be there instead of here on the asphalt road on my way to work. Spring, a waterfall recently made public, a mining tunnel, and the arrival of my waders could not have come at a better time. It’s off to Horseshoe Mine Falls I go.

The trip had a sort of coming-home feel to it when I arrived. Standing at the trailhead for the waterfall I was about to commune with I could not help but think to myself, spend time in nature long enough in whatever capacity, condition, or demeanor you happen to be in, then stay away from her long enough, and, like a mountain from afar, she will come calling for her flock and shepherd you back.

I’m working on a web series tracing historic abandoned places throughout New England, you can check all of them out and learn about them on my channel if you want. Whenever I post a new one, I get messages from people asking exactly where locations are that I visit.

There’s a reason I don’t post up addresses or coordinates. I know most of you watching have no interest in vandalism or arson, but unfortunately once abandoned places are well known they become targets for destruction.

It’s happened to a few places that I really wanted to visit, so now I’m even more wary of releasing too much info. These spots deserve to be treated with respect, and keeping them somewhat secret is part of that.

In this video, we locate one and visit it using my favorite method: Google Earth.

For specific websites, I highly recommend:

• Art In Ruins
• Atlas Obscura
• Abandoned Wonders

I have a lot of fun researching, exploring, and filming these places - thank you for watching and supporting me.

La Minette, the former Delmar Hotel, Loch Sheldrake NY, in the Catskills

A video and photo urban exploration of the former Delmar Hotel Resort of the Catskills New York. Opened nearly 100 hundred years ago, in 1929, it survived the great depression, then World War II. But it couldn't survive the tremendous decline of the Catskills that would see the end of and eventual demolition of many of the once grand resorts, like Grossinger's and Kutsher’s. A few still stand, like the Delmar (renamed La Minette in it's final years). Take a journey to honor and remember these once popular family run resorts.

Downsville NY - A Hamlet of Delaware County, New York

Downsville is a hamlet, census-designated place (CDP), and former village in the town of Colchester, Delaware County, New York, United States. The population was 617 at the 2010 census.

It is the site of the Downsville Bridge, a covered bridge, and the historic Union Free School. Both are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Though the term hamlet is not defined under New York law, many people in the state use the term hamlet to refer to a community within a town that is not incorporated as a village but is identified by a name, i.e. an unincorporated community. Hamlets often have names corresponding to the names of a local school district, post office, or fire district. Because a hamlet has no government of its own, it depends upon the town or towns that contain it for municipal services and government. Because they do not have governments, hamlets have no clear boundaries.

Sholam Falls and Frozen Balls Falls -- Two Well-Kept Secrets in the Catskills!!!

Two waterfalls practically on top of each other. And a third waterfall not too far downstream. All three not very well known unless you're a local of Napanoch in the town of Wawarsing, NY. Now tell me you've heard of either place. They're outside mainstream tourism so most likely not. Even searching online for top ten things to do in Napanoch, Wawarsing, or Ellenville will make no mention of these waterfalls. Those are testament right there that should you go visit, you will very much likely encounter no one and all three waterfalls on Trout Creek--their strength, grace, and glory--will be yours and yours alone for your eyes to feast on.

But, alas, I would be remiss if I did not mention that--and perhaps this is all because of its pristine and relative obscurity--this time of year the area could be swarming with ticks. My wife and I found this out when--as excited as I was that I have found one waterfall, Shalom Falls, so easy to get to--I went back the next day this time taking my wife along right after lunch. We came back home shocked to discover 5 ticks crawling on our clothing. Fortunately, it was not too late, none bit -- yet.

There may be a way around the ticks, however. Sunrise.

Ticks may be least active at sunrise that they're practically non-existent. There are websites that say ticks are active from 6am to 9pm, but I am convinced these are just estimates. I don't think ticks watch the clock. They probably look at the light of day, temperature, humidity, and other natural signals. This is probably why ticks were never a problem in my previous hikes, because I always went at sunrise. For all I know, the other waterfalls I've been to are just the same except that I came when ticks were asleep.

So now, sunrise has one more item to add to my list of advantages over sunset or any other time of day for that matter:

-- No crowd
-- I can fly my drone with no one complaining about the racket, privacy, hazards, and whatnot
-- I can take landscape photos without waiting for others to be done with their Instagramming
-- Sunrise photos are pretty indistinguishable from sunset photos
-- I can get lost in the trails and not worry about getting dark
-- Should anything happen to me, later hikers will soon find me
-- I can be home in time for breakfast with Dunkin coffee and rolls in hand from the drive-thru
-- No ticks

There is just one downside to shooting at sunrise, and this could be big for many (including yours truly on some days) -- getting up early.

If you're prone to waking up no earlier than, say, 10am, then you will have to deal with ticks some other way.

But if you're an early-riser like me, then, Nature may not be all streams, rainbows, and butterflies, for Nature has her gnats, wasps, and creepy crawlers, too, but at least you get to hike worry-free when it comes to the sneaky, insidious, and nowhere-near-visible-until-too-late ticks.
