A Guide to Hike Monserate Mountain Trail - Fallbrook, CA
Every time we drove past Fallbrook, California on Interstate 15, we always saw hikers making their way up an unassuming trail on the side of the mountain. From the freeway, the trail looks like a short, boring, but brutal hike going up the steep side of the mountain. Little did we know, besides being a butt-kicker, Monserate Mountain Trail is actually quite beautiful, and a popular workout trail for the locals. Not only will you get your heart pumping with the steep elevation changes, but Monserate Mountain Trail also offers panoramic views of the surrounding areas.

Historic Highway 395's Heller's Bend and the Heller's Bend Preserve
From 1926 through 1949, Highway 395 on its way from Bonsall to Fallbrook, California traveled on a dangerous stretch of road with a number of s-curves known as Heller's Bend. The road was the site of many accidents over the years, and local legends even had it that the road was named for a couple who lost their lives there. But the truth was much stranger.
Nowadays Highway 395 is long gone, and this section of road doesn't see much traffic. On this lonely stretch of road you can find Heller's Bend Preserve, an old avocado farm that has been transformed into a peaceful nature preserve, with one lone trail that leads up.
In this video we talk about the story of Heller's Bend, considered one of the most dangerous stretches of Highway 395, site of a number of fatal crashes while exploring the Heller's Bend Preserve.

Every so often, I find myself away from home, but with a few hours to kill. As far as I'm concerned, what better way to kill time than to find a hike? Of course, this wasn't at the spur of the moment. I made sure to plan ahead so that I knew what to do when the free time was sprung on me. It's moments like this that the Boy Scout motto gets applied: Be Prepared. As usual, it's always nice to execute a good plan!

DAY TRIP: Myrtle Creek Botanical Garden and Nursery in Fallbrook, California
Slow down and unwind at Myrtle Creek Botanical Gardens & Nursery. It is located just minutes off Highway I-15 in Fallbrook. Discover one of North San Diego County’s most tranquil destinations. The country setting and whimsical decorations surrounded by acres of lush gardens is a perfect get away. The turn of the century farm is surrounded by the shade of an ancient live oak forest. Also enjoy the Farmhouse Gift Shop and organic Café Bloom on the grounds of Myrtle Creek.
Fallbrook & Bonsall: An Afternoon in rural North San Diego County
If you picture Southern California as just big cities and sprawling suburbs, come along! Diane and Vern visit the small towns of Fallbrook & Bonsall in San Diego's beautiful North County on their way back home. These are agricultural areas known for commercial nurseries, citrus and avocado groves and their 'buy local'/support local atmosphere. Both are about 30-45 minutes from the Pacific Ocean and offer great food in a more rural setting, at places like El Parque, across from Live Oak Park in Fallbrook.
Bonsall is a little cooler than Fallbrook and has one main plaza, very low-key and 'noncommercial'...sans coffee chains and other franchise-type establishments (maybe two fast foods?) and is a thoroughly 'horsey' community, with a track and many horse owners on sprawling ranches.
Enjoy! (The cheeseburger and chile relleno with onion rings are always medium rare, just spicy enough on the chile relleno, and the onion rings crispy and delicious!) Sit on a rustic, shaded wooden deck and look across at old live oaks and families picknicking. Then drive farther into town and take Mission to Bonsall.
So much more to see incluidng the cute Main Street of Fallbrook with antique shops and a local coffee shop, restaurants with authentic Mexican food. Even a little chocolate shop with an owner who will tell you stories about his long history in the coffee and candy business.
Hiking to Fall Brook Falls
Fall Brook Falls is a lovely hike located out in Holtville located about an hour outside of Fredericton or 1.5 hours from Miramichi. This is the biggest waterfall in New Brunswick and the perfect place to bring your family to explore and experience the best that nature has to offer with access to a little area along the South Branch Miramichi River as well.
The trailhead for Fall Brook Falls can be accessed by turning onto County Line Road from the Holtville Road where you have to pay a $10 fee and sign a liability waiver at the Gatehouse which is only open from 6am to 8pm. From here you continue 13km along a dirt road where you will see a sign to turn left into the Fall Brook Falls trailhead. There are three areas for parking, the first two can be accessed by all vehicles where the last is down a very steep hill leading to the river, but requires a 4x4 or AWD and is still not guarenteed that you’ll be able to make it back out, depending on conditions.
From the upper parking lot this trail is only 500m down to the South Branch Miramichi River and 1.4km of moderate hiking to the falls making it a 2.8km in and out hike. This hiking trail takes about an hour in and out but it usually takes me 1.5-2 hours to enjoy the massive falls and the gorgeous river, so i certainly recommend staying a while to relax and enjoy the beautiful falls, babbling Brook and rolling sounds of the rippling water flowing over the rocky river.
You wont likely encounter many people on the trail... but if it is the weekend and the sun is shining, you can expect to run into at most a handful of people enjoying the falls as it isnt too close to any major cities, has a fee to enter and 13km up a dirt road making it slightly less accessable compared to the many other falls in New Brunswick.
This trail pairs extremely well with a trip to the Priceville Footbridge which is the longest Footbrige in New Brunswick at 200m in length and only 20 minutes away located on the McNamee Road. You can drive right up to the base of the Footbridge and there is ample parking. This is a great place to stop and enjoy a snack, picnic, or simply just to walk across the bridge and enjoy the river as is runs beneath you.
I hope that this video serves as a trail guide for some and as motivation for all to get out and enjoy some waterfalls, hiking trails, and mountains (big hills) that our province has to offer!
