WHERE TO STAY IN BUDAPEST: A DISTRICT GUIDE -- True Guide Budapest

The city of Budapest covers more than 500 square kilometers. It is split down the middle by the River Danube, with the residential and hilly Buda on the west side, and the commercial, flat Pest on the east side of it. Budapest has 23 districts (kerület in Hungarian), which are numbered clockwise in widening circles (like Paris' arrondissements). It is easy to find the district from the address of a location, as the two middle digits of the four number zip code indicate it (for example: zip code 1056 means 5th district).
I created this district guide to help you choose where to stay in Budapest depending on the atmosphere and your travel style.

DISTRICT I.: romantic / first time visit
this is the castle district

DISTRICTS II., III., OR XII.: to enjoy greenery and relax
these are all on the hilly Buda side (Rózsadomb, Óbuda, Svábhegy)

DISTRICT V.: the downtown, ideal for business or for families with smaller kids
the city centre (Belváros)

DISTRICT VI.: on a budget and/or to enjoy the culture of the city
this are is called Terézváros

DISTRICT VII.: the Jewish neighborhood but also has great nightlife
this are is called Erzsébetváros

DISTRICTS VIII. AND IX.: cool but perhaps rough neighborhoods
they are called Józsefváros and Ferencváros

DISTRICTS IV. AND X.: they are mainly lower middle class residential and industrial districts
they are called Újpest and Kőbánya

DISTRICTS XI., XIII., AND XIV.: primarily upper middle class residential
district XI. is called Újbuda (on the Buda side), XIII. is Újlipótváros and XIV. is Zugló.

ALL OTHER DISTRICTS (XV., XVI., XVII., XVIII., XIX., XX., XXI., XXII., XXIII.) are further out from the city

I am a proud local Hungarian living in Budapest.
I was born and have lived in this beautiful city, Budapest for decades. I am in love with it - and not because I haven’t seen anything else. I am a seasoned traveller and I have also spent many years living abroad. However, my heart (and wife, and jobs and goulash soup and lángos) have pulled me back to my birth town. I love this city and know it inside out.

I live and love Budapest, I want to share my tips with you.

Exploring Budapest: District VI

Budapest’s District VI is located in the heart of the city, with iconic Andrássy út running through the middle, and located above the world’s second oldest underground. While it’s the second-smallest district in Budapest, it is packed with history – and home to some of the nicest restaurants, chicest shops, and jaw-dropping architecture.

SYNAGOGUE. The Dohány Street Synagogue. Largest in Europe. - Budapest Hungary - ECTV

The Dohány Street Synagogue (Hungarian: Dohány utcai zsinagóga / nagy zsinagóga; Hebrew: בית הכנסת הגדול של בודפשט, Bet ha-Knesset ha-Gadol shel Budapesht), also known as the Great Synagogue or Tabakgasse Synagogue, is a historical building in Erzsébetváros, the 7th district of Budapest, Hungary. It is the largest synagogue in Europe,[1][2] seating 3,000 people and is a centre of Neolog Judaism.

The synagogue was built between 1854 and 1859 in the Moorish Revival style, with the decoration based chiefly on Islamic models from North Africa and medieval Spain (the Alhambra). The synagogue's Viennese architect, Ludwig Förster, believed that no distinctively Jewish architecture could be identified, and thus chose architectural forms that have been used by oriental ethnic groups that are related to the Israelite people, and in particular the Arabs.[3] The interior design is partly by Frigyes Feszl.

The Dohány Street Synagogue complex consists of the Great Synagogue, the Heroes' Temple, the graveyard, the Memorial, and the Jewish Museum, which was built on the site on which Theodor Herzl's house of birth stood. Dohány Street itself, a leafy street in the city center, carries strong Holocaust connotations as it constituted the border of the Budapest Ghetto.[4]

History
Built in a residential area between 1854 and 1859 by the Jewish community of Pest according to the plans of Ludwig Förster, the monumental synagogue has a capacity of 2,964 seats (1,492 for men and 1,472 in the women's galleries), making it the largest in Europe and one of the largest working synagogues in the world (after the Beit Midrash of Ger in Jerusalem, the Belz Great Synagogue and Temple Emanu-el in New York City). The consecration of the synagogue took place on 6 September 1859.

The synagogue was bombed by the Hungarian pro-Nazi Arrow Cross Party on 3 February 1939.[5] Used as a base for German Radio and also as a stable during World War II, the building suffered some severe damage from aerial raids during the Nazi Occupation but especially during the Siege of Budapest. During the Communist era, the damaged structure became again a prayer house for the much-diminished Jewish community. Its restoration and renovation started in 1991, financed by the state and by private donations, and was completed in 1998 (see below).

Architecture
Exterior
The building is 75 metres (246 ft) long and 27 metres (89 ft) wide.[6] The style of the Dohány Street Synagogue is Moorish but its design also features a mixture of Byzantine, Romantic and Gothic elements. Two onion domes sit on the twin octagonal towers at 43 metres (141 ft) height. A rose stained-glass window sits over the main entrance.

Similarly to basilicas, the building consists of three spacious richly decorated aisles, two balconies and, unusually, an organ. Its ark contains various Torah scrolls taken from other synagogues destroyed during the Holocaust.[citation needed]

The Central Synagogue in Manhattan, New York City is a near-exact copy of the Dohány Street Synagogue.[7]

Interior
The Torah ark and the internal frescoes made of colored and golden geometric shapes are the works of the famous Hungarian romantic architect Frigyes Feszl. A single-span cast iron supports the 12-metre-wide (39 ft) nave. The seats on the ground-floor are for men, while the upper gallery, supported by steel ornamented poles, has seats for women. This synagogue is very different from other synagogues as it is the only one to have pipe organs and a cemetery.

Franz Liszt and Camille Saint-Saëns played the original 5,000-pipe organ built in 1859.[8] A new mechanical organ with 63 voices and four manuals was built in 1996 by the German firm Jehmlich Orgelbau Dresden GmbH.[9] One of the most important concerts in the Synagogue's history was in 2002, by the organ virtuoso Xaver Varnus. A crowd of 7,200 filled sanctuary seats and standing space some four hours before the concert[citation needed] to hear the artist's virtuosity.[10]

My name is Eric Clark and I am a world traveler. I have been around the world a few times and decided to help fund my travels by sharing my videos and pictures. I have been to almost every country and would be glad to give tips and pointers. Drop me a note. = )

walking in the District V - Lipótváros - Budapest, Hungary [4k Ultra HD 60fps ]

District V (also known as Inner City – Leopold Town - Lipót város) is the heart of Budapest and the political, financial, commercial and touristic center of Hungary.

The name of the district is Belváros-Lipótváros (English:), which refers to the two historical neighbourhoods that is located in the district; Belváros (Inner City) and Lipótváros (Leopold Town). Inner City is the old town of Pest, while Leopold Town was established in the early 19th century, and became the political and financial centre of Hungary in the early 20th century when the Hungarian Parliament was built. The two neighbourhoods were originally the 4th (Inner City) and 5th (Leopold Town) districts of Budapest until 1950 when the two districts were merged and number IV was given to Újpest (New Pest).

Today there is a coexisting larger definition of inner city (with lower case letters) which includes all of District V and some parts of District VI, District VII, District VIII, District IX and District XIII, and sometimes even some parts of the Buda side, however this larger definition is only colloquial.

The reason Inner City is not the 1st district, is that until 1873, Buda served as the capital city of Hungary, so it was obvious to start the numbering at the Buda Castle District. Districts on the Pest side received numbers from IV to X.
