The Church of Our Lady of Alsemberg, whose first structures date back to 1241, contains several works of art, including a Romanesque baptismal font from the 12th century.
Since the middle of the 13th century, Alsemberg has venerated a Romanesque statue of Mary, which was allegedly donated to the parish by Sofia, wife of Duke Henry II of Brabant.
Tradition has it that the Blessed Virgin desired from the Queen of Hungary, Elisabeth of Thuringia, that she should build a church in Brabant, on the mountain, where the wormwood bloomed. The Romanesque-Byzantine miraculous statue of the Mother Virgin, invoked as the Star of the Sea, dates from about 1200 and is carved from Hungarian hornbeam. Princess Sofia, daughter of St. Elizabeth of Hungary, who died in 1231, brought it to Alsemberg when she married Duke Henry in 1242.
A Romanesque church stood here until the 14th century, which was replaced by the present building from the 1350s onward. The construction of the new three-aisled church progressed very slowly. The church is built in the late Gothic style and has all the characteristics of Brabant architecture from the 14th century, including the gables over the side aisles and the pillar capitals with cabbage leaf motif.
The choir was worked on from about 1350 to about 1450. The vault was not completed until 1470, thanks to a gift from Duke Charles the Bold, who came here on a pilgrimage on February 8, 1466. In 1503 work began on the tower, the lower vault of which was not completed until 1527. Around 1520 the large nave was vaulted over. Charles V donated wood from the Sonian forest for this purpose. Hence his coat of arms is inscribed in the vault.
The sacristy dates from the 17th century and was adapted in 1775. General restoration was begun in 1866 and the slender, crowned spire was completed in 1891. The spire bears a ducal crown, referring to the role that several dukes of Brabant played in the creation of this shrine.
The most recent restoration dates from 1983.
Apart from the Romanesque devotional statue, the church possesses several other works of art, including a wrought iron choir screen from 1770, two Baroque confessionals and a pulpit (end 18th century) by Jan van Geel. Baptismal font, of which the vessel dates from around 1200 and probably belonged to the original Romanesque church (side portal). There is also a marble baptismal font from 1725. Several paintings, some of which recount the history of the pilgrimage site, were painted around 1645 by Antoon Sallaert. This Brussels artist also painted nine of the 16 portraits that decorate the sacristy and depict the church's benefactors.

Herbeumont et son château - Belgique - Echappée touristique
Echappée touristique aujourd'hui dans la commune de Herbeumont, très beau village avec les ruines de son château du 15e siècle.

Le château, en ruine, situé sur une colline escarpée au sud-ouest du village, est classé au patrimoine majeur de Wallonie12.
Au cœur du village d'Herbeumont, l'église Saint-Nicolas13 actuelle a été inaugurée le 12 octobre 1903. La Poste a fêté le centenaire de cet événement local en la choisissant pour sujet d'un timbre-poste émission spéciale Noël-Nouvel An 200314.
Le viaduc sur la Semois
La Ligne de chemin de fer 163A (Bertrix-Muno), créée en partie pour desservir l'industrie ardoisière de la région à son heure de gloire, fut fermée et déferrée à partir de 1972. Le tracé en est spectaculaire et comprend plusieurs ouvrages d'art dont un viaduc qui franchit la vallée de la Semois à 40 m de hauteur sur le territoire communal.
L’habitat traditionnel, composé principalement de fermes et petites maisons en schiste et grès du xixe siècle15, représente encore une part significative du bâti local.
Herbeumont compte aussi plusieurs monuments et autres éléments de patrimoine à la mémoire des Belges décédés lors de conflits armés
En 1285, Jean de Rochefort17 signe seigneur de Château Thierry et ban d’Orjo, du nom de son apanage. Il reçoit en 1294 Herbeumont. Son fils, Robert d’Orjo, seigneur de Château Thierry et Orjo, trouve un accord avec l’abbé de Saint-Hubert au sujet du ban d’Anseremme en 1320.
La plus ancienne pierre tombale du cimetière d'Herbeumont atteste de l'existence dudit cimetière, et vraisemblablement d'une église, au xve siècle18.
Au cours de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, le 10 mai 1940 les Allemands envahissent la Belgique. Ainsi, dans les premières heures du 12 mai 1940, Herbeumont est prise par les Allemands de la 10e Panzerdivision19, du XIX. Armee-Korps (mot.) qui a pour objectif de traverser la Meuse au niveau de Sedan.
En 1977, la fusion des anciennes communes d'Herbeumont, Saint-Médard et Straimont donne à la commune sa forme actuelle.

The lords of Heverlee built a first castle here in the 14th century. From the beginning of the 16th century the current castle was built in renaissance-style. It was extensively renovated in neo-gothic style in the 19th century. In 1916 the duke of Arenberg donated the domain to the university.

A world renowned rose garden, which is undoubtedly the greatest asset of the Coloma estate in the heart of Sint-Pieters-Leeuw.
A perfect day in one of the most surprisingly beautiful spots I’ve discovered in Belgium so far!
The idea of a rose trail quickly took shape and this resulted in the design of a garden tracing the history of rose cultivation and an international rose garden. These were opened in the year 2000.
In the winter of 2001-2002, the tower building was restored and was given a new function as a rose museum.
In 2004, a standard rose garden was opened. The roses here are grouped by colour. This was further expanded with the breeding of roses on stem. The creation of the standard rose garden concentrated the attention in this particular spot in Coloma on the cultivation of roses grafted onto stems.
2009 was the year of the Japanese rose garden, with more than 150 varieties.
The Chinese rose garden was officially opened in 2012.
To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Coloma Rose Garden in 2015, a new rose named ‘Coloma’ was planted at the entrance to the rose garden.
All this has resulted in Coloma developing into the most comprehensive rose garden in the world.
The rose garden is still under full development. Annually, new countries and more varieties of rose are introduced. Or how the dream of many became a genuine pearl in the world in just 15 years.
In the name of the rose
Rose breeders spend years developing a new rose. Pollinating, cross-fertilising, growing, selecting one or more plants from the thousands of attempts and then multiplying them. After a test period lasting years, they can finally be put on the market. Licence holders throughout the world then grow and breed the rose. The name is, of course, very important. Often they are named after a famous person. Actor Louis de Funès, Princess Mathilde, the artists Picasso and Monet all have their own rose.
But less famous people are also represented. The names of many roses begin with ‘Madam’ or ‘Miss’, and are a homage to wives or mistresses. Then there are also those amusing or striking names such as Happy Chappy, Poésie, Petit Serpent, Paljas, Echo, Love Letter, Pin-up, Sexy-Rexy…

Il Porcellino (Italian piglet) is the local Florentine nickname for the bronze fountain of a boar. The fountain figure was sculpted and cast by Baroque master Pietro Tacca (1577–1640) shortly before 1634,[1] following a marble Italian copy of a Hellenistic marble original, at the time in the Grand Ducal collections and today on display in the classical section of the Uffizi Museum. The original, which was found in Rome and removed to Florence in the mid-16th century by the Medici, was associated from the time of its rediscovery with the Calydonian Boar of Greek myth.[2]
Tacca's bronze, which has eclipsed the Roman marble that served as model,[3] was originally intended for the Boboli Garden, then moved to the Mercato Nuovo in Florence, Italy; the fountain was placed originally facing east, in via Calimala, in front of the pharmacy that by association gained the name Farmacia del Cinghiale (Italian for boar). To gain more space for market traffic it was later moved to the side facing south, where it still stands as one of the most popular features for tourists. The present statue is a modern copy, cast in 1998 by Ferdinando Marinelli Artistic Foundry and replaced in 2008, while Tacca's bronze is sheltered in the new Museo Stefano Bardini in Palazzo Mozzi.[4]
Visitors to Il Porcellino put a coin into the boar's gaping jaws, with the intent to let it fall through the underlying grating for good luck, and they rub the boar's snout to ensure a return to Florence, a tradition that the Scottish literary traveller Tobias Smollett already noted in 1766,[5] which has kept the snout in a state of polished sheen while the rest of the boar's body has patinated to a dull brownish-green.[citation needed]
Ask any Florentine where “Il Porcellino” is and they’ll reply without hesitation: “in Piazza del Mercato Nuovo”. And they are right of course, the bronze boar stands a short distance from Piazza della Signoria and the Ponte Vecchio, a curious tourist attraction that everyone likes to stroke!
The poor boar’s nose is worn out from all the patting by people wanting to cash in on the statue’s luck. But what’s it really all about?
The good luck ritual (the real ritual!)
Tradition has it that it’s good luck to touch the statue’s nose, so every day hundreds of people give the boar a stroke hopeful that some of the good fortune will brush off on them. But hardly anyone knows the full ritual: while rubbing the nose with one hand you should hold a coin in the animal’s open mouth and let it drop there. If the coin falls through the grating, it’s good luck “guaranteed”. If not, you should try again.
The statue’s history
Like many other famous pieces of art scattered around Florence, the statue is actually a copy. The original is found in the rooms of the Bardini Museum, a bronze fountain made in the first half of the 1600s by a pupil of Giambologna Pietro Tacca, a commission of Cosimo II de’ Medici.
Although we all call it “Il Porcellino”, the fountain is actually a wild boar (look closely and you’ll agree!) and it was placed in that spot for practical reasons. The loggias of Piazza del Mercato Nuovo were a marketplace for bartering and trading among fine cloth merchants and they needed the water to wash themselves and to drink.
Fun fact
“Il Porcellino” is famous all over the world. In fact, copies of the statues are dotted around the globe, such as in the gardens of Belgium’s Enghien Castle and in Place Richelme in Aix-en-Provence, France. Munich boasts two copies!
There’s even a reproduction in Sydney, Australia, opposite the hospital. It was donated by Florentine noblewoman Marchesa Fiaschi Torrigiani, who pledged the statue to the hospital in 1968 in memory of Piero Fiaschi, an Italian doctor working in Australia. Sydneysiders also believe that stroking the boar’s nose brings good luck, just like the real statue, and their ritual brings tangible benefits: the coins go to the hospital.
