We headed 1.5 hours outside of Austin for a little day trip to Fredericksburg, Texas, a cool little German town in the Texas Hill Country. We spent the day hiking up Enchanted Rock, enjoying delicious homemade peach ice cream, and eating German food!

Texas' Top Natural Wonders: Enchanted Rock
The massive pink granite dome rising above Central Texas has drawn people for thousands of years. But there’s more at Enchanted Rock State Natural Area than just the dome. The scenery, rock formations, and legends are magical, too!
When humans first inhabited the area 12,000 years ago, Enchanted Rock was seen as a strange structure from a supernatural world.
It creaked, it groaned, and it flickered with supposed “ghost fires,” which was enough to make native tribes think the now-beloved dome was haunted and inhabited by the devil himself, according to an article by Texas Parks and Wildlife Magazine.
Even without the spirits, Sharon Mosher, the dean of the Jackson School of Geosciences at the University of Texas, told TPWD that Enchanted Rock is a spectacular granite” because it contains a special mixture of minerals.
From its convergent beginnings to its stunning views, Enchanted Rock has always been a draw for explorers, scientists, hikers and adventurists alike.

This former cowboy state is now bustling with tourists. So, let’s take a tour of the places nearby.
Austin, Texas
With just a distance of 165 miles, Austin is the favorite weekend destination for the Houston people.
Houston has a love/hate relationship with Austin. It offers a taste of somewhat everything American: good food, beer bars, and a buzzing nightlife scene.
You can make way to the Greenbelt, a winding 12+ mile trail where you can bike, hike, and a visit to Lady Bird Lake for kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and one-way hiking and biking; catch the panoramic city views from Mount Bonnell.
Garner State Park, Texas
With roughly 5 hours of drive from Houston, the Garner State Park offers many types of outdoor activities. Camping is the way to go with many campsites open for outdoor grills and fire pits.
You can hike through the park’s 1,700+ acres of beautiful foliage (which gets even more beautiful as the leaves change color).
Hikers and bikers can enjoy 16 miles of breathtaking splendor.

The distance between the next destination and Houston is 230 miles with a roughly 3 hours and 45 minutes drive.
In the middle of the beautiful Texas Hill Country lies a charming, romantic little town Fredericksburg. Fredericksburg is loaded with open-air wineries. You can also taste a variety of cheese in this country town. It offers dazzling views of Enchanted Rock: a massive pink batholith that’s one of the choicest spots to catch those ultra-sexy, big, and bright Texas stars.
Galveston Island, Texas
In just about 50 miles you can be with mother nature at Galveston Island. If it’s a beach day, do the beach; otherwise, you can spend your time strolling the historic Strand District, which looks especially festive during the holidays.
Lockhart, Texas
For foodies, Lockhart is the perfect destination. It is just 2 hours and 15 minutes from Houston. It is a weekend getaway for families who are looking for some good old-fashioned smoked meat.
You could even make your visit a day trip if you so please… just don’t forget to pack a cooler so you can bring some of the good stuff homes.

San Antonio, Texas
San Antonio is a place that has both the Riverwalk and The Pearl for its visitors. It is about 197 miles from Houston.
Head back to the River Walk for dine-in prezzies and hit San Antonio’s coolest bars, afterward.
Fort Worth, Texas
Fort Worth is a small town that was the final stop for rest and supplies before crossing the Red River into Indian Territory for American forces.
You can get a true feel for cowboy culture, boots, required masks, and all.
New Braunfels, Texas
With a drive of 2 hours and 40 minutes, New Braunfels has a river life of its own.
Texas's oldest dance hall, Gruene Hall, is here. You can buy some antiques, cowboy hats, olive oils, and pickles along with sizzling fajitas. You can also visit a Texas-style African safari, check out the murals at an Outdoor Art Museum, or journey your way through the Natural Bridge Caverns, located around 25 miles west of town.
South Padre Island
South Padre Island is 375 miles from Houston. This is a blissful island escape, which is super quiet and super serene off-season.
On the southernmost tip of the island, you’ll find another rarity: a mile-long, unspoiled beach at Isla Blanca Park. Pitch a tent there for a more serene stay, or try renting a whole beach house. Drinking on the beach is allowed in South Padre.
Just make sure to grab some of the best-fried seafood available nearby.
Enchanted Rock: Visit Fredericksburg TX
Hi, Daryl Whitworth here at one of my favorite places in the Texas Hill Country -- Enchanted Rock.
I used to come here as a kid 30 years ago and now I often bring my kids here to hike and enjoy this beautiful part of the Hill Country. This is one of the best places in Central Texas for hiking and rock climbing.
Enchanted Rock is a huge, pink granite dome, that covers over a square mile. It is the second largest granite outcropping (batholith-underground rock formation uncovered by erosion) in the United States.
The Enchanted Rock State Natural Area is located 18 miles north of Fredericksburg on Ranch Road 965.
It is known as Enchanted Rock because the Native Americans in the area believed it was haunted due the noises made by the granite; plus the rock will glisten in the moonlight.
Things to do:
• Hiking
• Technical Rock climbing
• Primitive Camping
• Geological study
• Bird and wildlife watching
• Star gazing (minimal light pollution)
Enchanted Rock is pet-friendly, but pets must be on a leash.
During peak seasons (March to June and October to December), the park may reach parking capacity, requiring the park to temporarily close on weekends (sometimes as early as 11 a.m.). The park will reopen when sufficient parking is available.
The park is open 7 days a week year-round from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
And admission is: $6 adults; children 12 and younger are admitted free.
