Exploring GERMANY'S Amazing CASTLES: Road Trip Through Mosel Valley (Part 1)
What's the first thing you think of when you think of Germany? Okay, maybe it's not Germany's beautiful castles, but something like beer, bread or the Autobahn. But we think that castles should also be very high up on that list!
In this video (which is part 1 of 2), we go on a road trip in Germany, our home country, to explore Mosel Valley and go on a medieval castle hopping tour. Mosel Valley is a popular travel destination, for Germans and travellers from other countries as well. Mosel valley is one of Germany's 13 wine areas and it's well known for its excellent Riesling wines. The area also played an important role in Roman as well as medieval times, which is when the castles were built that we'll visit on this trip.
First up we visit Eltz castle (Burg Eltz), one of Germany's most beautiful and in our eyes underrated castle. We then drive to Beilstein and hike up to Metternich castle to enjoy a great view of the Mosel river. We also have lunch in Beilstein to eat German asparagus, which is in season right now. It's also one of those foods that German worship and that almost everyone goes crazy about when it's in season. We then make our way to Geierlay suspension bridge. It used to be the longest suspension bridge in Germany and it's publicly accessible 24/7. A more adventurous experience than we expected!

Tecklenburg im Teutoburger Wald - Wandern auf dem Tecklenburger Bergpfad
Am Nordrand des Münsterlandes an der Landesgrenze zwischen Nordrhein-Westfalen und Niedersachsen erheben sich der Teutoburger Wald und das Wiehengebirge aus der westfälischen Ebene. Oben auf dem Kamm des Teutoburgerwaldes liegt das kleine Örtchen Tecklenburg. Von dort lassen sich weite Ausblicke ins Münsterland und ins Wiehengebirge genießen. Zahlreiche Wanderwege führen über Berg und Tal durch den Teutoburger Wald und das Tecklenburger Land. Der Tourismusverband nennt sie werbewirksam Teutoschleifen.
An einem sonnigen Maitag erwandeten wir die Teutoschleife mit dem einladenden Namen 'Tecklenburger Bergpfad'. Wir wurden nicht enttäuscht: Über Berg und Tal führte uns eine vierstündige Wanderung von Tecklenburg nach Brochterbeck. Aussichts- und abwechslungsreich war es und wir waren zufrieden. Für den Hinweg nach Brochterbeck wählten wir die Talvariante. Auf dem Rückweg nach Tecklenburg wanderten wir auf dem Hermannsweg, der hier als Kammweg ein sehr entspanntes Laufen ermöglicht.

De geschiedenis van Lingen is met name vanaf de zestiende eeuw verbonden met het huis Oranje. De geschiedenis gaat terug naar 975, toen Lingen het eerst in de archieven genoemd werd. Lingen lag op het kruispunt van twee belangrijke wegen, de Vlaamse en de Friese Straße en was zodoende al in de middeleeuwen een handelscentrum. Lingen maakte in 1227 deel uit van het gelijknamige graafschap Lingen. Het graafschap werd vanaf de 16e eeuw tot de Nederlanden gerekend. In 1597 veroverde Maurits van Nassau, de latere prins van Oranje, de vestingstad. In 1605 heroverde Ambrogio Spinola de stad. In 1632 ging de stad naar het bezit van het huis Oranje tot de dood van stadhouder Willem III. Daarna, in 1702, kwam het Graafschap in Pruisische handen. Later waren respectievelijk Napoleon, Pruisen, Hannover en daarna weer Pruisen aan zet. Tegenwoordig is Lingen een zelfstandige stad in de deelstaat Nedersaksen.

ABOUT THE DAY (Day 1 - Chapter 3)
This is the first day of the motorcycle tour to Istanbul. This leg of the European tour starts in England and finishes in Germany after travelling just over 500 miles. The route was through France from the train terminal in Calais and then up into Belgium. The ride continued through Holland and into Germany on the autobahn past Munster and up to Emsdetten.
The daily video was done each morning, it was to explain the aim of the days ride prior to setting off. As all good plans, they are made in sand as we had to adjust the route or change our decisions based on the days events. Today the European motorcycle tour leaves England and traverses France, Belgium and Holland before arriving in Germany.
If we took more pictures than normal it would put us back, if we decided to have a longer stop for lunch we wouldn’t get as many miles in or even stopping for more comfort breaks would limit the miles we would ride.
One thing we all agreed on was that this was definitely not an endurance ride, it was to experience the route and enjoy the adventure. I hope you enjoy the adventure we had and hope that this triggers some deep spark within you, that at leasts gets you to consider riding on the continent.
We set off early to head to the Eurotunnel, we rode around the M25 to Folkestone and caught the train to Calais in France. This leg of the European motorcycle tour went along the coast to Belgium and then towards Antwerp before crossing Holland. We arrived in Germany and headed north to Emsdetten.

Hey Good morning.
It’s Tuesday morning, it's the 6 June 2017 and this is the first day of our SOCs (Silly Old C…s) tour. We were named this by Ginge before we set off, because we are all over 50 and doing this big trip as three older guys. Mike was the least experienced so he decided he was a Silly Old C### and the name tag was used initially by all three of us.
(Basically we are heading over to Eastern Europe to Istanbul and over the Bosphorus River and into Asia. The journey was for Ginge as it was his aim and wish to ride his motorbike to Asia but my aim was to ride ’20 Countries in 20 Days’. The reason for wanting to do this is because I didn’t want to be tagging along and just being a passenger to the tour).
Today's journey sees us riding down from the Midlands to the south of England, down to the Channel Tunnel. Once we are over on the other side of the water, we will be in France and heading up through Belgium, into Holland and then running up into the central industrial belt in Germany.
We will make our way north to a nice little sunny place called Emsdetten, which is not far from Munster. (This is where all three of us served together in the Army back in the early to mid 80’s. When we arrive in Emsdetten, that is the end of the first day as Ginge stayed over there when he left the Army as he married a German girl and made Germany his home).
As you can tell in the video, it’s raining out there as we start the journey. It’s wet and windy, just the perfect start to the trip but it tests our waterproofs's ready for the rest of the motorcycle tour.

ABOUT THE DAY - (Day 2 - Chapter 4)
This second days ride on the European motorcycle tour to Istanbul. This leg of the European tour starts in Emsdetten in northern Germany and takes us all the way sown to Austria where I get to see the Austrian Alps for the first time in many years.
This leg is really a motorcycle tour of Germany but on the fast autobahn. The scenery isn’t great but we have a hotel booked in Austria, this is the only hotel we have booked for the whole trip. Having a place to get to every night is restricting and it becomes a chore if you have to get there or lose your money.
Problems are always a moment away, concentration and focus are necessary to stay safe and ensure you arrive in one piece. Not to mention looking after the bike and making sure you treat it well to allow you to finish the trip.
The European motorcycle tour in German saw Mike having a bird strike to the head. It could have finished his tour in mid Germany. We rode to BMW Motorrad in Munich to see if we could sort out a new visor, we then continued the motorcycle tour to Austria to reach our destination.

Hi good morning.
So it's day two, we are in Emsdetten in Germany. Today sees us travelling down into Austria which will be country number 6.
A late night in to Germany last night, lots of problems on the road (this is because of a huge accident on the motorway in Holland on the way through). The issue was not with us but with other traffic, but we managed to get here (Ginge’s house) and arrived safe and sound.
We were late into bed in the early hours of this morning (because Ginge wanted to do the first video before we departed). It was probably 01.30 hrs this morning and then we were up at 05.15 hrs to get a shower and changed ready for the off.
It is now just after 6 o'clock and we are looking at moving off very shortly.
So it's down through the whole length of Germany and into Austria. The guys are just getting the bikes ready in the background and then we will be on our way.
