We tour north western Germany from the border with the Netherlands - Bad Bentheim and Leer - reaching the city port of Emden where we visit the VW factory and watch Passats being made and loaded to rail. Further north still is Norddeich Mole -gateway to the German North Sea Islands. We travel east through Oldenburg to Bremen. Bremen is a gem! It's home to Kelloggs, Jacobs and Becks bier. The central port retains its classic dock railway infrastructure with wagonload freight running over cobbled quays past 1880s gabled warehouses. The new harbour to the west, in contrast, is a bustling modern container port. Through Bremen's ancient streets pass modern trams - trams that share the port infrastructure in places - interwoven with freight services. Bremerhafen to the north is the fastest growing container port on the North Sea and a leader in automotive exports - used by both BMW and Mercedes. The automotive traffic for Emden, Bremen and Bremerhafen is classified at Osnabrück, an interesting and busy two level station. We continue east looking at private lines around Hoya and the German onshore oil industry. We conclude with Lüneburg, Maschen freight yard and Harburg. Narrated RT 100 mins Published August 2008
