Bamberg (Germany) Vacation Travel Video Guide

Bamberg is located in Bavaria and the history of the town can be traced back to the year 902. A typical German city from the Middle Ages situated at the river Regnitz,
where today the fishermen's houses inspired the title Little Venice.

The famous Gothic building of the Old Town Hall stands on piles in the middle of the river Regnitz and can only be reached from either side via bridges. Since the 14th century, the town hall has formed the border between the bishop's mountain town and the citizens' island town.

The Bamberg Emperor's Cathedral at the top of the mountain district is not only the most striking building in the old town but is considered one of the most important sacred buildings in the German-speaking world. The interior is furnished with artistic altars, the Equestrian of Bamberg statue, the imperial tomb of Henry the Second and the pope's tomb of Clemens the Second. Just like ancient Rome, Bamberg was built on seven hills.

The thousand-year history can be seen everywhere. The old town on the slope of the castle hill is the largest intact historical town centre in Germany and has been declared a World Cultural Heritage Site.

Nearby is the Schiller's Place, where a theatre and a residential building are also reminiscent of another great universal artist of the German language: E.T.A. Hoffmann.

This visit to the city ends at the Watercastle Concordia. The baroque castle is picturesquely situated on the banks of the Regnitz, where the great history of Bamberg lives on.

Places to see in ( Bamberg - Germany ) St Michael's Church

Places to see in ( Bamberg - Germany ) St Michael's Church

Michaelsberg Abbey or Michelsberg Abbey, also St. Michael's Abbey, Bamberg is a former Benedictine monastery in Bamberg in Bavaria, Germany. After its dissolution in 1803 the buildings were used for the almshouse Vereinigtes Katharinen- und Elisabethen-Spital, which is still there as a retirement home. The former abbey church remains in use as the Michaelskirche.

The buildings are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Town of Bamberg. As of 2016 and for the foreseeable future, the church is closed for repairs. The abbey gave its name to the Michaelsberg, one of the hills of Bamberg, overlooking the town. With Bamberg Cathedral and the monasteries of St. Stephan and St. Gangolf it formed part of a T-shaped cross in Bamberg's topography.

The hill is the most prominent spur of the Steigerwald in the municipal area and with its steep eastern decline towards the Regnitz is significantly higher than the Domberg. This contributes to the dominant effect of the abbey buildings. The hill was inhabited before the abbey was founded. Excavations have uncovered massive walls and a moat from the 10th century.

Heinrich supported the abbey with rich gifts, including properties. Three books with which the abbey was initially endowed are still in the Staatsbibliothek Bamberg. The abbey followed the Hirsau Reforms, which also resulted in the building of a new church. The chronicler and author Frutolf of Michelsberg was prior here until his death in 1103. The abbey flourished under Bishop Otto (d. 1139), whose burial in the abbey church and subsequent canonisation in 1189, together with the papal protection granted to the abbey in 1251, was of enormous advantage in increasing the independence of the abbey from the bishops.

Due to its exposed location on top of the hill, the former abbey buildings are visible from many places in Bamberg. The structures enhance the impact on the viewer by their bulk. The Wirtschaftsgebäude and living quarters built during the Baroque period from massive sandstone surround the substantial two-spired church. In turn they are enveloped by the terrace gardens which surround the abbey on three sides. The palace-like three-storied main wing faces north, towards the Main.

Bamberg | Sehenswürdigkeiten | Rhein-Eifel.TV

Infos: -

unusual and interesting cemetery at Maria Limbach Church, Franconia, Bavaria, Germany

This is the cemetery behind the Franconian church named Maria Limbach Pilgramage Church featured during a Viking Cruises optional Tour of the Franconian Countryside on August 1, 2019 during a Cities of Light cruise which has an austere and ordinary outside but inside almost makes one think one is in the Passau Cathedral. I had never actually been in a German cemetery before and so this one absolutely amazed me. It is behind the church on St. 2277 between Sand a Main and Eltmann in Bavaria about 25 km from Bamberg and just south of the Main River. I have no idea how typical this is for a German, Franconian or Bavarian cemetery but to me it was awesome and amazing. Come to think about it more, I don't think this is so unusual in Germany because I got glimpses of another cemetery in Koblenz during our bus ride to Marksburg Castle and from the limited view I had over the wall it looked pretty similar.

tour of Maria Limbach Pilgramage Church (Wallfartskirche Mariaheimsuchung) in Eltmann, Germany

This video shows the ordinary outside but stunningly beautiful Baroque or Rococo interior of a church in Franconia, Bavaria, Germany near the Main River which is in English referred to as either the Maria Limbach Pilgramage Church or the Church of the Visitation of Mary as it appeared on August 1, 2019 during a Viking cruises optional tour of the Franconian Countryside during a Cities of Light river cruise. The video also shows the amazing to me cemetery behind the church. In German this is either Wallfahrtskirche Maria Limbach or Wallfahrtskirche Mariaheimsuchung. As the video shows, the outside looks totally ordinary and then when you get inside it is something not quite at the level of the Passau Cathedral but it makes you think of something special. This church is notable for being the last known major work of architect Balthasar Neumann. The beautiful Altar in front was carved by Johann Peter Wagner. The church dates to the mid 1750's and is located on an unmarked German road or highway which on Google and Bing maps is shown as St. 2277 between the towns of Sand a Main and Eltmann just south of the Main River and about 25 km west of Bamberg. Don't know if this cemetery is typical of Germany in general but it really is impressive to me in its beauty and detail and the maintenance. Because it is on an unmarked highway, this could be difficult to find outside an organized tour.
