Cagliari is not only sea and pink flamingos but also historical monuments.
The ancient Amphitheatre of Cagliari is the most important of the historic buildings of Roman Sardinia. The builders, perhaps on several occasions between the first and second century AD, have done an incredible job carving the rock to form these bleachers. To help your imagination and take your mind back in time, I can tell you that the Roman Amphitheatre of Cagliari had a monumental facade well over 20 meters high and could hold up to 10,000 people to watch the fights between men and wild beasts, the execution of capital sentences and fights to the death between gladiators.
So what we see today in ruins was once an integral part of the city's life, both good and bad.

IT

ITALIAN FAMILY EXPERIENCE // Day trip from Cagliari

We loved visiting Sardinia, but this day trip from Cagliari was epic!

The tour started from Cagliari and went directly to Su Nuraxi di Barumini (the only UNESCO World Heritage Site on Sardinia), the visited a super talented wood-worker, and finally ended up at the cutest village called Aritzo where we learned how to make pasta and the traditional bread (pane carasau).

Thanks to Your Sardinia Experience for this complimentary tour so we could share our experience with you.

Places to see in ( Sardinia - Italy ) Oristano

Places to see in ( Sardinia - Italy ) Oristano

Oristano is an Italian city and comune, and capital of the Province of Oristano in the central-western part of the island of Sardinia. It is located on the northern part of the Campidano plain. It was established as the provincial capital on 16 July 1974. As of December 2010, the city had 32,165 inhabitants. The economy of Oristano is based mainly on services, agriculture, tourism and small industries.

Oristano was previously known by the Byzantines as Aristanis (in Byzantine Greek: Αριστάνις), and founded close to the ancient Phoenician settlement of Othoca (now Santa Giusta). It acquired importance in 1070, when, as a result of the frequent Saracen attacks, Archbishop Torcotorio made it the seat of the bishopric, which was previously in the nearby coastal town of Tharros. It also became the capital of the giudicato (judiciary, equivalent to a Duchy or Kingdom) of Arborea. Consequently, fortifications were designed, but the building thereof went on until judge Mariano II rose to power.

In medieval times Oristano vied for power over the whole island of Sardinia, and therefore waged wars against the other Sardinian kingdoms which culminated in the attempt to conquer the whole island during the reign (1347–75) of Mariano IV and that of his son Hugh III (1376–1383) and his daughter Eleanor (1383–1404). The giudicato of Arborea held out to be the last Sardinian kingdom (Giudicato) to cease to exist in 1420, about 10 years after the battle of Sanluri. It was transformed in Marchesato by the Aragonese and conquered, following a revolt by the last marquess Leonardo Alagon, by the Catalan troops of the Kingdom of Aragon, in 1478 after the battle of Macomer.

Thereafter, Oristano's history was that of the island of Sardinia, characterised by the Aragonese-Spanish (until 1708) and Piedmontese (from 1720) dominations, and then the unification of Italy. In April 1921, David Cova, Emilio Lussu, Camillo Bellieni and other Sardinian veterans of World War I founded in the city the Sardinian Action Party.

The Tower of St. Christophoros, otherwise known as Tower of Mariano II, was built in 1290, is 19 metres (62 ft) tall and the most striking remaining evidence of the old walls built at the time of the Giudicato, as it was one of the main gates thereof.

St. Mary's Cathedral (1130) was rebuilt during the reign of Mariano II after being destroyed in a siege. Of the original structure of Mariano, only parts of the apse and base of the campanile are left, as well as the Gothic Chapel of the Rimedio, which houses some medieval sculptures.

Oristano can be reached by train from Sardinia's ports of Olbia and Porto Torres, and the island's main cities Cagliari and Sassari. From Oristano all villages of the province can be reached by buses departing the bus station close to centrally-located Piazza Mannu. Moreover, a private concern provides a twice-daily bus service to and from Cagliari Elmas Airport. The journey takes approximately 2 hours.

Places to see in ( Villasimius - Italy )

Places to see in ( Villasimius - Italy )

Villasimius is a coastal town in southeast Sardinia, Italy. The Marine Protected Area Capo Carbonara has barracuda, seagrass meadows and dive sites. Nearby, the Stagno di Notteri lagoon is visited by migrating flamingos in winter. Starting from the beach of Porto Giunco, the Sentiero delle Cave path leads to a 16th-century watchtower. West are the medieval Old Fortress and the white-sand Spiaggia del Riso beach. Approximately 31 miles from the Port of Cagliari and from Elmas Airport in southern Sardinia, is Villasimius, one of the most sought-out resort localities on the Mediterranean. It is rather well-known for its concentration of singular, golden-white beaches, transparent water, intense perfumes of the myrtle plant, of juniper and Scotch broom, and for its accommodation of every type of tourist.

The territory of Villasimius extends from the mountain chain of the Seven Brothers (Sette Fratelli) to the coasts of the Capo Carbonara Promontory. Of course these mountains are of an incomparable beauty (Mt. Minni Minni, accessible on foot or on bike, offers a striking panorama over the surrounding terrain); however, the beaches are the main attraction. Campulongu, Simius and Porto Giunco Beaches are the most coveted by those who want to enjoy a full day with their families or friends, to fish or surf, sunbathe and swim toward the sunset. And they have a wide choice at that: 20 beaches are dispersed throughout the 20 miles of coast in Villasimius, where tourists will find everything from agritourisms to more lux accommodations. They can even camp or rent a private villa.

Villasimius’s urban center – just under a mile from Simius Beach - boasts an archaeological museum and a touristic port, and its summer calendar is an annual explosion of music, folkloristic and enogastronomic festivals. Villasimius is also known for its religious festivals, along with its honey and local wine production, its amaretti sardi (almond cookies), and formaggelle (a Sardinian sweet made with pecorino ricotta, also known as Pardulas).

Villasimius is also made up of two islands: l'Isola dei Cavoli, or Cabbage Island, so-called for the abundant presence of cabbage, and Isola di Serpentara, which derives from the island’s serpent-like form. A rather fascinating boat procession takes place on Cabbage Island every third Sunday in July; the boats are heavily-decorated as they move toward the marine statue of the Virgin, Protectress of Sailors (or the Madonna del Naufrago). After a crown of flowers is launched to sea, a team of scuba-divers plunges to the seabed as a priest recites a mass that can be heard with underwater speakers.

( Villasimius - Italy ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Villasimius . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Villasimius - Italy

Cagliari | Sardinia

Cagliari (English /ˌkæliˈɑːri/, /ˈkæljəri/ or US /kælˈjɑːri/;[2][3] Italian: [ˈkaʎʎari] ( listen); Sardinian: Casteddu;[a] Latin: Caralis) is an Italian municipality and the capital of the island of Sardinia, an autonomous region of Italy.[4] Cagliari's Sardinian name Casteddu literally means castle. It has about 150,000 inhabitants,[5] while its metropolitan city (including Cagliari and 16 other nearby municipalities) has more than 431,000 inhabitants. According to Eurostat, the population of the Functional urban area, the commuting zone of Cagliari, rises to 476,974.[6] Cagliari is the 26th largest city in Italy and the largest city on the island of Sardinia.
An ancient city with a long history, Cagliari has seen the rule of several civilisations. Under the buildings of the modern city there is a continuous stratification attesting to human settlement over the course of some five thousand years, from the Neolithic to today. Historical sites include the prehistoric Domus de Janas, very damaged by cave activity, a large Carthaginian era necropolis, a Roman era amphitheatre, a Byzantine basilica, three Pisan-era towers and a strong system of fortification that made the town the core of Spanish Habsburg imperial power in the western Mediterranean Sea. Its natural resources have always been its sheltered harbour, the often powerfully fortified hill of Castel di Castro, the modern Casteddu, the salt from its lagoons, and, from the hinterland, wheat from the Campidano plain and silver and other ores from the Iglesiente mines.
Cagliari was the capital of the Kingdom of Sardinia from 1324 to 1848, when Turin became the formal capital of the kingdom (which in 1861 became the Kingdom of Italy). Today the city is a regional cultural, educational, political and artistic centre, known for its diverse Art Nouveau architecture and several monuments.[7] It is also Sardinia's economic and industrial hub, having one of the biggest ports in the Mediterranean Sea, an international airport, and the 106th highest income level in Italy (among 8,092 comuni), comparable to that of several northern Italian cities.[8]
It is also the seat of the University of Cagliari,[9] founded in 1607, and of the Primate Roman Catholic archdiocese of Sardinia,[10][11] since the 5th century A

It is also Sardinia's economic and industrial hub, having one of the biggest ports in the Mediterranean Sea, an international airport.

The city of Cagliari is situated in the south of Sardinia, overlooking the centre of the eponymous gulf, also called Golfo degli Angeli (Bay of Angels) after an ancient legend. The city is spread over and around the hill of the historic district of Castello and nine other limestone hills of the middle-to-late Miocene, unique heights of a little more than 100 metres above sea level on the long plains of Campidano. The plain is actually a Graben formed during the Alpine orogeny of the Cenozoic, which separated Sardinia from the European continent, roughly where the Gulf of Lion is now. The Graben filled in the course of tectonic movements associated with the breakup of the ancient island Paleozoic skeleton.

Considerable remains of the ancient city of Karalis are still visible, including those of the Tuvixeddu necropolis (the largest Punic necropolis still in existence), the Roman amphitheatre, traditionally called Is centu scalas (One hundred steps), and of an aqueduct used to provide generally scarce water. Still visible are also some ancient cisterns of vast extent, the ruins of a small circular temple, and numerous sepulchres on a hill outside the modern town that appear to have formed the necropolis of the ancient city.

The Palaeo-Christian Basilica of San Saturnino, dedicated to a martyr killed under Diocletian's reign, Saturninus of Cagliari, patron saint of the city, was built in the 5th century. Of the original building the dome and the central part remain, to which two arms (one with a nave and two aisles) were added later. A Palaeo-Christian crypt is also under the church of San Lucifero (1660), dedicated to Saint Lucifer, a bishop of the city. The church has a Baroque façade with ancient columns and sculpted parts, some of which came from the nearby necropolis.

About what to see in Cagliari, the pink flamingos are one of the most exciting.

Flamingos are the most famous inhabitants of these ponds and it could not be otherwise. Even if you are not fond of nature you will be charmed by them. They are among the biggest flying birds in the world, they are about 150 cm high and live in groups of thousands of specimen. They are present all year round in Cagliari but their number varies. They move from Molentargius to Santa Gilla and to other wetlands in the Mediterranean and Africa. The ponds in Cagliari are an important habitat for these birds, in some periods as many as 15000 are hosted here.
