What’s your favorite thing to do in Carson City, Nevada? This historic city dates back to the Gold Rush days of the 1850s when it was built as a stopover point for prospectors heading to California in search of gold. But it wasn’t long before the largest silver find in history was uncovered in the hills outside Carson City and it became a hub of its own. When Nevada became a state in 1864, Carson City was named as the state's capital, so it's got over 160 years of history waiting for you.

You’ll find exhibits about the state’s wildlife, prehistoric fossils found in the area, and the city’s silver mining history in the State Museum. And the train museum takes you through the history of rail transportation in the state and what it meant to Carson City’s mining industry.
If you're more of an outdoor enthusiast, there are lots of great things to do in Carson City, Nevada. You can visit some of the many waterfalls in the area, like the King Canyon Waterfall, or hike one of the many trails in the hills surrounding the city. Elko (Shoshoni: Natakkoa, Rocks Piled on One Another) is the largest city in and county seat of Elko County, Nevada, United States. With a 2020 population of 20,467, Elko is currently growing at a rate of 0.31% annually and its population has increased by 11.86% since the most recent census, which recorded a population of 18,297 in 2010. Elko serves as the economic hub of the Ruby Valley, a region with a population of over 55,000. Elko is 21 miles from Lamoille Canyon and the Ruby Mountains famously dubbed the Swiss Alps of Nevada, providing year round access to recreation including hiking, skiing and hunting with access to over twenty alpine lakes. South Fork State Park, Elko NV in our 40' Class A Motorhome
We arrived to South Fork State Park & Recreation Area in Elko, NV is a snow storm, and within days the weather turned to Summer temps and our lakefront RV campsite was just dreamy. The West Shore of this Nevada State Park was perfect for RV boondocking and was definitely big-rig friendly. It's free with a Nevada State Park all-access pass, or $10/ni for residents and $15/ni for out of state residents.
The nearby Ruby Mountains were a playground for us to explore with the jeep and on hiking trails. And the lake itself was perfect for daily sup boarding after work :)
