History is Where You Find It - Elkins, WV Railroad Heritage
In Elkins, county seat of Randolph County, WV, we visit the tourist information center in the former Western Maryland Railway depot, the current home of the Tygart Valley Flyer scenic train. Then we wander through the remains of the once-extensive locomotive servicing facilities, including the turntable pit, on our way to the West Virginia Railroad Museum for a video tour of their collection of artifacts.

Elkin, North Carolina | Complete Walkthrough 2023
Elkin is filled with history.
From the Paleo-Indians 10,000 years ago, to the Sioux Indians settling along the Yadkin River as early as 500 BC.
English colonists came in the mid-eighteenth century along with some colonists from Ireland. Cherokee Indians were also in the area, although the Cherokees had been active in the French and Indian War, they had joined in treaties with the English in 1763, followed by the events of the American Revolution.
The beginning of industry with the cotton mill, the Civil War involvement, the coming of the railroad, the town's coping with the depression of the Thirties, and the two world wars heavily influenced the town's development. Chatham Manufacturing was famous for making World War II wool blankets for soldiers. There his a Civil War marker on West Main Street across from the Elkin Library.

A very comfortable, climate-controlled excursion that features two separate mountain grades, an S curve tunnel, passage into a 1,500 feet deep canyon with steep, densely forested slopes, and a high bridge over the meandering Shavers Fork of the Cheat River.
This vintage diesel-powered passenger train has gained a reputation as one of the most relaxing mountain wilderness excursions in our Mountain Rail Adventures portfolio. The 4-hour, 46 mile round trip departs at 11 a.m. from the restored Elkins Depot on Railroad Avenue.
The trip culminates at the High Falls of Cheat, an 18′ high, 150′ wide waterfall located in one of the most remote and pristine settings in the region.
