Eastleigh is a town in Hampshire, England, between Southampton and Winchester. It is the largest town and the administrative seat of the Borough of Eastleigh, with a population of 24,011 at the 2011 census.

The town lies on the River Itchen, one of England's premier chalk streams for fly fishing, and a designated site of Special Scientific Interest. The area was originally villages until the 19th century, when Eastleigh was developed as a railway town by the London and South-Western Railway.

--------------------
History
---------------------
The modern town of Eastleigh lies on the old Roman road, built in A.D.79 between Winchester (Venta Belgarum) and Bitterne (Clausentum). Roman remains discovered in the Eastleigh area, including a Roman lead coffin excavated in 1908, indicate that a settlement probably existed here in Roman times.

A Saxon village called 'East Leah' has been recorded to have existed since 932 AD.('Leah' is an ancient Anglo-Saxon word meaning 'a clearing in a forest'). There is additional evidence of this settlement in a survey from the time which details land in North Stoneham being granted by King Æthelstan to his military aid, Alfred in 932 AD. The prefix 'Est' or 'East' is thought to refer to its location relative to the established settlement of Baddesley.

The Domesday Book of 1086 gives a more detailed account of the settlement, which is referred to as 'Estleie'.

In 1838 the London and South Western Railway Company (L&SWR) built a railway from Southampton to Winchester. It was decided to build a station near the little village of Barton. This railway station was originally named Bishopstoke Junction. In 1868 the villages of Barton and Eastley were combined into one parish. A parish church, the Church of the Resurrection, was built in the same year, at a cost of £2,300. A local noted author of many novels, Charlotte Yonge, donated £500 towards the building of the church. She was rewarded by being given the privilege to choose a name for the 'new' parish; either Barton or Eastly. She chose Eastly, but with a new modern spelling; Eastleigh. In 1891 the L&SWR Carriage and Wagon Works from Nine Elms in London were transferred to Eastleigh. This was followed by the Nine Elms Locomotive Works which were moved there in 1909. These railway works were closed in 2006 but have since reopened, albeit on a smaller scale.

Eastleigh has seen a rapid and controlled expansion in residential, industrial and commercial development over recent years. The borough of Eastleigh was ranked the 9th best place to live in the UK 2006 by a Channel 4 programme.

The United States Navy established a naval air station on 23 July 1918 to assemble and repair Caproni Ca.5 and Airco DH.4 and DH.9 bombers for the Northern Bombing Group of the First World War. The base closed shortly after the First Armistice at Compiègne. Perhaps Eastleigh's best-known 'resident' is the Spitfire aeroplane which was built in Southampton and first flown from Eastleigh Aerodrome. A replica has recently been placed on the roundabout at the entrance to the airport.

Eastleigh Museum, which is to be found in the High Street, holds information about the town and the surrounding villages, including Bishopstoke which had been the largest residential area.

Eastleigh has two further education colleges: Barton Peveril Sixth Form College (where Colin Firth was a pupil) and Eastleigh College (both on the same road). Crestwood Community School is the secondary school for the town, and primary schools include Cherbourg Primary School, Norwood Primary School, Nightingale Primary School, the Crescent Primary School and Shakespeare Infant and Junior Schools to the north of the town.

Eastleigh Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Hampshire, and around five miles north of Southampton, is the town of Eastleigh.

According to a written record there has been a Saxon village in the area called 'East Leah' from as early as 932 AD ('leah' meaning 'clearing in the forest'). For several centuries it remained a tiny village. This would all change from around 1838 when the London and South Western Railway Company built a railway line from Southampton to Winchester.

A station was built at the approximate midpoint between Southampton and Winchester. It was initially named Bishopstoke Junction, after the neighbouring village called Bishopstoke. In 1839 the line was extended to Basingstoke and London. The station was renamed 'Eastleigh and Bishopstoke' in 1889, and finally 'Eastleigh' in 1923.

The transition from small village into large railway town was a gradual process. By 1851 'Eastley' as it was then spelt had a population of just 213. In 1868 Eastley merged with the neighbouring village of Barton to become one parish. A woman named Charlotte Yonge donated £500 towards the building of a new church. In return she was granted permission to rename the parish either Barton or Eastley. She opted for Eastley, but with a change of spelling to Eastleigh to make it sound more modern.

By 1881 the population had reached just over 1,000. In 1884 the railway company decided to build a wagon and carriage works at Eastleigh. This new industry sparked an industrial boom in the town. In 1909 locomotive works were built at Eastleigh. In the 1920s Pirelli opened a cable factory in the town.

In 1932 Southampton Airport opened. Despite the name it is much closer to Eastleigh than to Southampton, at around a mile south of Eastleigh town centre. In the 1970s the M3 motorway opened, connecting Eastleigh to London via Winchester and Basingstoke. This has made Eastleigh a popular commuter town for those working in the capital, in addition to its own local economy.

On Leigh Road in the town centre is the Railway Man Statue. Unveiled in 1995, it depicts a skilled railway worker of the 1930s in homage to Eastleigh's heritage as a railway town and the many people who worked at the Eastleigh Railway Works.

5 Most Dangerous Cities in the UK

What are the most dangerous cities to live in the United Kingdom? Ranking the United Kingdom as the 116th most dangerous country is not bad at all. That means the country is safer than, at least, 115 others in the world. Between 2020 and 2021 alone, it experienced 600 homicides as just one of the crimes reported that year. A total of 6.1 crimes were reported during that year. Out of these, 2 million were crimes against another person. If there were 67 million people in the UK during that year, the crime rate would be a whole 2,985 crimes per 100,000 people. However, it’s not everywhere in the UK that is dangerous. In this video, we will discuss those currently rated as the 5 most dangerous cities in the United Kingdom.
5. Nottingham
This city with links to the Robin Hood legend and which is famous for lacemaking and the tobacco industry is incidentally here. If we go by its population of 337,100, Nottingham that’s playing host to the headquarters of a number of major international businesses including Boots, E. On Energy, Pedigree Petfoods, and Gala Bingo, is the 14th largest city in the UK.
It’s the most dangerous major city in Nottinghamshire. Out of the 236 cities, towns, and villages in Nottinghamshire, it’s among the 20 most dangerous overall. In 2021, the overall crime rate in Nottingham was 114 crimes per 1,000 people. That was 49 percent higher than the crime rate in Nottinghamshire with a rate of 76 per 1,000 residents. Violence and sexual offenses are the most common crimes in Nottingham with 14,210 offenses during 2021, producing a crime rate of 45 per 1,000.
In 2020, a total of 34,228 crimes were committed with a crime rate of 108 per 1,000. In 2019, 42,113 were committed with a rate of 133. The year 2018 witnessed 41,970 crimes with a rate of 133. In 2017, the crime rate was 119 with 37,753 crimes. And in 2106, the total crime was 30,097 with a rate of 95 crimes per 1,000 people.
In December 2021, Nottingham was the most dangerous city for bicycle theft, with 52 crimes reported. That month was also a bad month for the city’s residents as it was the most dangerous area in Nottinghamshire for burglary while 110 of these crimes were committed. The city recorded 321 criminal damages and arsons still during December 2021.
4. Birmingham
We just have to agree with the inclusion of Birmingham on this list. This is a city with a population of about 1.1 million with an urban area having just over 2.6 million residents and a metropolitan area with a population of 3.5 million. Birmingham, despite having a coveted reputation as the first manufacturing city in the world some 200 to 150 years ago, is currently one of the most dangerous cities in the UK.
As the most dangerous major city in the West Midlands, Birmingham is among the 10 most dangerous overall out of the 44 cities, towns, and villages in the West Midlands. In 2021, the overall crime rate in this city was 137 crimes per 1,000 people. That was 17 percent higher than the West Midlands’ overall crime rate of 118 per 1,000 residents. Violence and sexual offenses are the most common crimes in Birmingham during 2021 when some 78,062 of these crimes were committed. That was a rate of 67 per 1,000 and was 38 percent higher than the 2020's figure.
Consider also the historical crime rate for Birmingham, not just what it had in 2021, and form your opinion. In 2020, a total of 123,271 crimes were committed with a crime rate of 106 per 1,000. In 2019, 120,832 were committed with a rate of 104 per 1,000 residents. The city in 2018 witnessed 114,605 crimes with a rate of 99. In 2017, the crime rate was 89 while 103,319 crimes took place. And in 2106, the total crime was 90,930 while at the rate of 78 crimes per 1,000 people.

HAMPSHIRE, ENGLAND ROAD TRIP ◆ UK TRAVEL VLOG ◆ WINCHESTER, PORTCHESTER CASTLE, & SOUTH DOWNS!

[Filmed October 7, 2020] In today’s video, Derek and I left our AirBNB in Southsea (Portsmouth) for the day, and drove around the county of Hampshire!

We started the day by using our English Heritage passes to explore Portchester Castle, where we learned a ton of history via the audio guide we could download to our phones!

After eating a quick sack lunch in our car, we drove through South Downs National Park to the Cathedral City of Winchester. Unfortunately, we arrived too late at Winchester Cathedral for a tour to see where Jane Austin is buried, but I guess that means we’ll have to go back someday!

Hope you enjoy tagging along! Happy travels!

Places to see in ( Stow on the Wold - UK )

Stow-on-the-Wold is a small market town and civil parish in Gloucestershire, England. Stow on the Wold is situated on top of an 800 ft hill, at the convergence of a number of major roads through the Cotswolds, including the Fosse Way.

Stow on the Wold was founded as a planned market place by Norman lords to take advantage of trade on the converging roads. Fairs have been held by royal charter since 1330 and an annual horse fair is still held on the edge of the town of Stow on the Wold .

Stow-on-the-Wold was prominently featured in the eleventh episode of series 6 of Top Gear, when Jeremy Clarkson reviewed the Ford F-Series there. He chose to film it there because it's a typical village in the English countryside. Several roads link Stow to the surrounding villages. The Fosse Way (A429), which runs from Exeter to Lincoln; the A424, which runs from Burford, into the A44 and into Evesham; and the A436, which connects Cheltenham and Gloucester with Stow.

From 1881 until 1962, Stow was served by Stow-on-the-Wold railway station which was on the Great Western Railway's Banbury and Cheltenham Direct Railway. The nearest railway station is now Moreton-in-Marsh (approximately 4 miles from Stow). This station is on the Cotswold Line from Hereford to London Paddington.
