Farewell to Russia - From Moscow to Murmansk

After four years in the country, Jelle Brandt Corstius says goodbye to his Russia. He visits people and places that are illustrative of the way he has come to know Russia. Thus, he takes us to the subway in Moscow, which forms a society in itself. With his landlord, Jelle visits a Russian Orthodox mass, a promise from long ago that Jelle finally redeemed. We are following him during a visit to a shelter for poor Russians, located directly across the mayor's house, who does everything he can to get rid of them, because they spoil his view.

In the first series: From Moscow to Magadan, Jelle Brandt Corstius traveled from West to East, focusing on the endless Russian countryside and the villages. In this second series: From Moscow to Murmansk, he travels from North to South along the largest river of Russia: the Volga River. A trip along the relatively unknown cities like Murmansk, Volgograd, Dzerzhinsk, Nizhny Novgorod, but also to Moscow and Saint Petersburg. Through topics like women in Russia, new censorship, the environmental problem from Russian perspective and the ideological vacuum, a relatively unknown side of Russia is once again exposed.

The long dark in Vorkuta. Part 1.

You may sponsor the creation of new videos via: ,

Vorkuta is a coal-mining town, situated in the northeast of European Russia, just north of the Arctic Circle. With it's satellite towns, Vorkuta forms the so-called Vorkuta Ring or Vorkuta Circle, which included such towns as Severny, Tsementnozavodsky, Yur-Shor, Promyshlenny, Vorgashor, Komsomolsky, Mulda, Zapolyarny, Oktyabrsky, Sovetsky and others. Their population was employed in coal mines and other industrial and military facilities. After collapse of the Soviet Union, many mines were closed due to accidents and high operating costs and people began to move to other regions. The towns of Vorkuta Ring became partially or completely abandoned, some were demolished.

LENINGRAD 1991 - The Last Soviet Winter - ROGER GEORGE CLARK photos

In Feb 1991 the English photographer and broadcaster ROGER GEORGE CLARK spent a week in snowbound Leningrad.

'It was the last Soviet winter,' he says. 'In September the city changed its name back to St Petersburg and at the end of the year the Soviet Union ceased to exist. That last winter the city looked beautiful under its coating of snow. Outside the Kazan cathedral film extras gathered for a period movie along with conscripts dressed in tsarist uniforms.

'Another intriguing sight was the snow-covered Cathedral of the Transfiguration. 102 Bronze cannon, captured during the Russo-Turkish War of 1828-1829, ring the building. As a child the poet and essayist Joseph Brodsky used to swing on the cast-iron chains linking these upside-down guns.

'I had the good fortune to photograph the Leningrad Philharmonic orchestra rehearsing. A sign of the times - they were playing Sibelius, whose Finnish nationalist music incurred Russia's suspicions even in tsarist times, let alone Soviet. Now they were playing Finlandia and Sibelius's Violin Concerto. Serge Kalagin conducted while Maxim Fedotov played the violin.

'Another sign of the times - a huge demonstration in Palace Square supporting the Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein. A few months before Hussein had invaded and looted Kuwait, sparking the first Gulf War. Many Russians were annoyed because the West had attacked and were freeing Kuwait. Here in Leningrad demonstrators appeared with large portraits of the dictator and posters accusing President Bush and Mikhail Gorbachev of supporting Zionism. The war aroused strong anti-Semitic sentiments, scuffles broke out in the crowd and the police hustled protesters away.

'The statue in silhouette depicts that sinister Communist revolutionary Felix Dzerzhinsky. He is better known by his nickname Iron Felix, or Bloody Felix. It was Dzerzhinsky who set up the Soviet State Security forces under their original name of the Cheka, later the KGB. Dzerzhinsky was Lenin's Himmler. The Cheka became notorious for torture and mass executions, especially during the Red Terror and Russian Civil War. This statue was torn down after Communism fell.

'Meanwhile, Leningrad's children played happily in the snow. As you can see those I photographed were well wrapped up to keep out the cold. Some looked surprisingly fashionable, as if dressed in designer clothes. In 1991, when the Soviets were still in power? Yes, I'm surprised, too, as I look at these photos now. The Soviets had a reputation for appalling clothes. But many parents took care of their children. Some of my pictures look as if they were taken for a Western fashion catalogue, but I assure these were just ordinary children I encountered while walking round the city.

'In addition you can see the fabulous Catherine Palace at Tsarskoe Selo under snow and the Cameron Gallery, plus the house where Anna Vyrubova lived. She was a confidant of the last empress and - fatally - introduced the royal family to Rasputin. Nicholas II and his family often met the mad monk in Anna's house, as well as the nearby Alexander Palace.

'The neo-gothic house is also something special - a miniature tsarist palace. The Cottage Palace, as it's called, can be found in the Peterhof Park. It was designed - like the Cameron Gallery - by a Scottish architect for Tsar Nicholas I.

'Down by the shore I discovered the snow-covered ruins of the Lower Palace - a favourite summer retreat of Nicholas II. Historic events happened here. In his study in the Lower Palace Nicholas II signed the 1905 October Manifesto granting a Duma (parliament) and civil liberties. And in 1914 he signed the order mobilising the Russian armies - a decision that plunged Europe into WWI and wrecked Russia. In 1917 the country collapsed and Lenin and the Bolsheviks seized power. The Lower Palace was destroyed by the Germans in WWII.

'I've reproduced some of these winter photos in earlier Leningrad/St Petersburg videos, but I thought I would put all the best winter shots in one video as I discovered I'd taken more snow photos than I thought I had. You may also be interested in my You/Tube videos - Soviet Sailors in Leningrad and Kronstadt - the Soviet Naval Base.'

What's left of communism? How big are the differences between the poor and the rich? What is the influence of corruption? Is Russia a young democracy (as former Dutch prime minister Jan Peter Balkenende previously said)? Is it a sovereign democracy (according to Putin) or a fascist regime (as read in The Economist)? Jelle Brandt Corstius is looking for the topics that rule the life of ordinary Russians in Russia.

Why Russia under Putin gets more nationalistic | VPRO Documentary

Why does Russia under Putin get more nationalistic? Why is nationalism in Russia a big topic? And what is modern Russia under Putin pursuing for a strategy? Dutch journalist and Russia expert try to find out who is pushing the forces behind Putin's desire for expansion and why people in Russia are again embracing nationalism.

In this eight-part travel series, the Dutch journalist and author Jelle Brandt Corstius travels through Russia and visits the neighbor countries Latvia, Moldova, Ukraine, Belarus, and Kazakhstan. What image do the Russians have of their neighbors and vice versa? What are the relations between powerful Russia and the other former Soviet republics? And how do the countries around Russia treat their Russian inhabitants? A series about propaganda and identity.

Since Crimea is seized by Russia something has changed. The kindness and spontaneity are gone and the old mistrust of the West has come up again. Dutch journalist and author Jelle Brandt Corstius meet people on the street, in a shop where Putin T-shirts are sold, visits Siberian separatists, and meets Putin's philosopher and advisor Aleksandr Dugin, who rewrote the idea of Eurasia.

For the first time since World War II, a European country invaded another. The Crimea was again part of Russia, as it should be. And for the first time since the fall of the Berlin Wall, they could be proud of something. A patriot law passed by the Duma is intended to make the Russians even more patriotic. The law comes into effect in schools, in the media and also in singing choirs. A conservative, traditional life is promoted. Brandt visits a military choir that performs patriotic songs and speaks to people who feel strengthened thanks to Putin.

Silent Motorcycle road trip | Russia 1000 km on Yamaha Warrior 1700

I went for a little ride.
Moscow - Suzdal - Vladimir - Dzerzhinsk - Bolshoye Boldino - Dzerzhinsk. 1000km. Reached Suzdal with friends and separated in Vladimir.

12.08.23. Start from home at 10 am. At 10.40 I met my friends at the gas station. The road was great, we were lucky with the weather too. We got to Suzdal on the city day. After Vladimir, I got caught in the rain, but it was short, and I was ready for it. I ride on the highway Moscow - Nizhny Novgorod so often that I already started to recognize cashiers at some gas stations, and they seemed to recognize me too. I arrived to Dzerzhinsk closer to night. By the way, the night was surprisingly warm, despite the rain and dampness on the highway. I had a jacket over a T-shirt, and it was even a little hot.
I decided not to drive to Boldino at night and to spend the night in Dzerzhinsk. It was the right decision. In the morning, I continued my way. Under Boldino I chose not the right direction and had to drive on an awful road a couple of tens of kilometers. Somewhere there, I almost spit out one of my organs. I especially liked the lying policemen instead of the joints of one of the bridges. I thought that's it, I'll fly out of the saddle. Then I finally arrived at Bolshoe Boldino. Back to Dzerzhinsk there was a long traffic jam, I had to ride on the opposite side of the road for a long time, forcing the motorists to move away from me despite me being on the wrong side of the traffic. Toward the end of the road, I was greeted by a gorgeous sunset.

Solo motorcycle camping on Yamaha Warrior 1700 | Linda river Nizhniy-Novgorod oblast, Russia

For a long time, I wanted to go alone for a night in the woods on a bike. In general, I would like to stay in the forest alone, far away from everyone, for at least 5 days. But for lack of time, I had to go for only one night.
I rode from Dzerzhinsk through Nizhny-Novgorod, where I just took a tent with a sleeping bag from my friends because I left mine in Moscow.
To get to the river Linda I had to ride a bit off-road. On Warrior it is merciless and useless. Heat, first gear, and a 1,7 liter heater under butt.
I had to stop at some point because my legs were frying like a steak on a griddle. At camp, I rinsed off, fed mosquitoes, sat, thought, and listened to the audiobook The Fall of Hyperion by Dan Simmons.
It was the warmest night I've ever spent in a tent. I didn't even have to get into my sleeping bag.

The Jolly Trio In: Pahod on the River Kara in Russia

This video is about The Jolly Trio In: Pahod on the River Kara
