DRONFIELD: North East Derbyshire Parish #24 of 24
Lying in the valley of the River Drone between Chesterfield and Sheffield this one means “open land infested with drones”. It’s the only town in North East Derbyshire and has existed since before the 1086 Domesday Book. In 1662, Charles II granted the town a market, although this later ceased.
The industrial history of the town includes coal mining, the wool trade, the production of soap and steel, and engineering. Today a range of manufacturing firms still operate in the town. The Wilson-Cammell steelworks was built in the town in 1872–3, following the completion of the Midland Main Line through the town in April 1869.
Its prosperity was short-lived. Its site had limitations that could not compete with low-cost coastal locations, and in 1883 production moved to Workington in Cumbria. 'Dronnies' as the people of Workington called the newcomers, formed Workington AFC in 1888
Since 1972 it has been twinned with Sindelfingen in Germany. Henry Fanshawe School has an annual student exchange with a school in Sindelfingen, which helps establish links between the young people in the two towns. The Peel Monument, situated on the town's High Street, was built in 1854 out of gritstone as a tribute to Sir Robert Peel, to commemorate his repeal of the Corn Laws in 1846. The monument is very distinctive, and is often portrayed in images of the town.
Perhaps though a sporting connection to Sheffield makes this place stand out, one which once enticed Brazilian legend Pele, to come for a visit. Welcome to DRONFIELD.

It's been a while I know, but finally the NORTH EAST DERBYSHIRE ROUND-UP video is here!
Using information that's been sent to me by all you lovely people out there, this is the video that catches all those comments and anecdotes and whatever else you wanted me to talk about, that I either missed or got wrong in the twenty four parishes of NORTH EAST DEREBYSHIRE!
In alphabetical order, I go through the district, from Ashover to Wingerworth and everything in between bringing the district to a close with all the extra information you lovely people out there have sent to me.
The long term plan for Derbyshire will see me hopefully begin AMBER VALLEY next year in early 2023, but for now, Derbyshire is on the backburner for a while as I concentrate on other areas.

Dronfield is a town in North East Derbyshire in the North Midlands region of England. It comprises the three communities of Dronfield, Dronfield Woodhouse and Coal Aston. It is sited in the valley of the small River Drone, and lies between the town of Chesterfield and the city of Sheffield. The Peak District National Park lies three miles (4.8 km) to the west. The town's name means open land infested with drones (male bees).
The town is known to have been in existence prior to the 1086 Domesday Book, and has a 13th-century parish church. In 1662 Charles II granted the town a market, although this later ceased. The industrial history of the town includes coal mining, the wool trade, the production of soap and steel, and engineering. Today a range of manufacturing firms still operate within the town.
Dronfield's population has increased dramatically in post-war years from 6,500 in 1945 to its current size of just over 21,000. The football ground to the north of the town is currently the home of Sheffield F.C., the world's oldest football club.
Dronfield was in existence before the 1086 Domesday Book, though little is known about its early history. It suffered after the Norman conquest when William the Conqueror sought to bring the North of England under control. Its name derives from the Old English drān and feld, meaning open land infested with drones (male bees).
Between the 16th and 19th centuries Dronfield grew around various industries, the most widespread of which was coal mining, with pits at Stubley being mentioned in the 16th century and a map of Hill Top in the 17th century showing some workings. Further mines were opened at Coal Aston in 1785 and Carr Lane in Dronfield Woodhouse in 1795. The town also benefited from trade with the lead mining and grindstone industries in the Peak District. The wealth of the Rotheram family, who became the Lords of the Manor of Dronfield, was based on the lead trade.
Dronfield is sited in the valley of the River Drone in North East Derbyshire, England. The Drone is a small river that, after flowing through Dronfield, joins the Barlow Brook at Unstone, and then flows into the River Rother at Whittington Moor, Chesterfield.
Dronfield is situated roughly midway between the town of Chesterfield to the south and the city of Sheffield to the north, for which it is a popular commuter town. The A61 trunk road Dronfield–Unstone Bypass cuts through the town, although this is not directly accessible from the town centre itself. Instead a network of secondary roads serves local traffic: the B6054, B6056, B6057 and B6158. Dronfield is also served via rail through Dronfield railway station. Dronfield covers an area of 3,457 acres (13.99 km2) and has as neighbours the villages and hamlets of Unstone, Holmesfield, Barlow, Apperknowle, Hundall, Marsh Lane and Eckington.
Situated close to the Pennines and many of the beauty spots of Derbyshire, Dronfield also has easy access to the Peak District National Park just 3 miles (4.8 km) away. There are four conservation areas either wholly or partly within Dronfield's parish area: Dronfield (adopted 1971), Coal Aston (1983), Dronfield Woodhouse (1990) and Moss Valley (1990); the first three cover the respective old village centres and are wholly within the parish, whereas Moss Valley covers a mixed landscape and is mostly outside the parish, to the northeast.
Within Dronfield's civil parish are 42 structures that are listed by Historic England for their historical or architectural interest. One structure - the parish church of St John the Baptist - is listed as Grade I, four structures - Aston End, Chiverton House, Dronfield Woodhouse Hall farmhouse and the building northeast of The Hall on High Street - are Grade II*, and the rest - including Dronfield Manor, the Peel Monument and several buildings in Church Street and High Street - are Grade II.

Dronfield Walk: Town Centre【4K】
Located in the county of Derbyshire, and around six miles south of Sheffield, is the town of Dronfield.
Geographically Dronfield is situated along the River Drone, just four miles east of the Peak District National Park. A settlement has existed here since the 11th century or earlier, as it appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 as 'Dranefeld'. It is believed to have been a target of William the Conqueror's 'harrying of the north', which was a campaign to punish non-cooperation between various northern towns (or technically midland in this case) and the new Norman rule.
From the 16th century Dronfield was a relatively industrial settlement. Owing to the surrounding sheep farms, it had a number of wool producers engaged in spinning and weaving in what was a cottage industry at the time. Soap making and tanning were also emerging industries around this time. A market charter was granted to Dronfield in 1662 by Charles II.
Between the 16th and 19th century a number of coal and lead mining pits opened up in proximity to Dronfield. Its proximity to the Peak District made lead an abundant commodity. As such, a number of large houses in the town were built by the lead merchants of the time.
In 1870 Dronfield railway station opened on the Midland Main Line situated between Chesterfield and Sheffield. In 1967 it was closed due to the Beeching cuts, but was reopened again in 1981. From 2008 Northern Trains have operated a regular service running between Leeds and Nottingham, stopping in Dronfield.
Dronfield is home to the oldest football club in the world still playing to this day. The club is, confusingly enough, Sheffield F.C. who were founded in 1857. In 2001 the club bought the Coach & Horses ground in Dronfield, which has since been dubbed 'The Home of Football'.
Famous people from Dronfield include Def Leppard drummer Rick Allen and footballer Gary Cahill.

UNSTONE: North East Derbyshire Parish #12 of 24
Sandwiched between Chesterfield and Sheffield is a long strip of land running from West to East that belongs to North East Derbyshire. It contains five parishes - Dronfield, Killamarsh, Holmesfield, and Eckington are four of them, and the fifth one is this little beauty which I would wager not a lot of people know much about.
It's a fair old size this parish. It includes no fewer than six settlements in total, seven if you want to count Summerley, a tiny hamlet that really is an extension of one of them, but every single one of them is purely a Derbyshire village, oozing that rural charm you will only find in this county, surrounded by lots of hills and plenty of friendly folk!
We begin our main walk in the oldest part of the main settlement, passing the church and the schools, and the war memorial, before encountering a river that plays a major role in some of the landscape this one occupies. You see, for centuries, the valley of the River Drone has been a problem when it comes to infrastructure, which is part of the reason why the Midland Main Line runs the way it does. The existing line is not the first to come through this area, and the one that does now has a pretty viaduct to cross.
The railway had a branch too which would lead to some sidings. These have long since gone, but they served the old colliery that was here, and the current Community Centre is built on the old trackbeds. The larger, newer part of the village grew thanks to mineworkers, but this wasn't an area all about coal. Sickle smithing was a thing in some of the other villages like Hundall and the Handleys too, as well of course as farming.
There's even a huge TV mast and an airstrip in this parish too. Quite a lot for a patch of North East Derbyshire that only holds just over 1,800 people. Welcome to UNSTONE.

Burford is a medieval town on the River Windrush in the Cotswold hills in West Oxfordshire, England. It is often referred to as the 'gateway' to the Cotswolds. Burford is located 18 miles (29 km) west of Oxford and 22 miles (35 km) southeast of Cheltenham, about 2 miles (3 km) from the Gloucestershire boundary. The toponym derives from the Old English words burh meaning fortified town or hilltown and ford, the crossing of a river.
Burford Priory is a country house that stands on the site of a 13th-century Augustinian priory hospital. In the 1580s an Elizabethan house was built incorporating remnants of the building. It was remodelled in Jacobean style, probably after 1637, by which time the estate had been bought by William Lenthall, Speaker of the House of Commons in the Long Parliament. After 1912 the house and later the chapel were restored for the philanthropist Emslie John Horniman, M.P., by the architect Walter Godfrey.
From 1949 Burford Priory housed the Society of the Salutation of Our Lady, a community of Church of England nuns. In the 1980s, its numbers dwindled, so in 1987 it became a mixed community including Church of England Benedictine monks. In 2008 the community sold the property and it is now a private dwelling. Burford has twice had a bell-foundry: one run by the Neale family in the 17th century and the other run by the Bond family in the 19th and 20th centuries.
Local legend tells of a fiery coach containing Sir Lawrence Tanfield of Burford Priory and/or his wife flying around the town that brings a curse upon all who see it. Andrews speculates that the apparition may have been caused by a local tradition of burning effigies of the unpopular couple that began after their deaths. The visitations were reportedly ended when local clergymen trapped Lady Tanfield's ghost in a corked glass bottle during an exorcism and cast it into the River Windrush. During droughts locals would fill the river from buckets to ensure that the bottle did not rise above the surface and free the spirit.

BARLOW: North East Derbyshire Parish #16 of 24
Here's a gorgeous little place between Chesterfield and Dronfield which oozes rural charm and that quaintness that we've come to expect from a village in the North East Derbyshire countryside. This place has more than a few things to make you want to stay a while, and why not? The views around here are nothing short of spectacular and the locals aren't bad either!
No way I could cover it all, I've stuck in this one to the main settlements which are laid out along the B6051. The oldest part of the village in the South has things such as the church of St Lawrence - a key building and linked to everything else in this parish in some way shape or form. Inside there's the remains of Richard Barley, a man who was married to Bess of Hardwick!
Bess of Hardwick use to own the building we see at the every end, located high up in the hills overlooking some of that wonderful countryside (she did like a view, remember Hardwick Hall!) The South of the village also contains the lovely Peacock Inn, an old water pump, loads of little historical bits and bobs like the ancient pinfold, and even a sundial in the churchyard.
The North, two areas known as Crowhole and Commonside, are a little newer and a little different too. Coal mining was a thing out here, not that you'd be able to tell nowadays because there's pretty much no trace of it, but look closely at the style of housing and you'll see a certain similarity to some terraces we've seen in the past. Some of those houses are now holiday lets!
Beautiful isn't a word I use a lot, but it perfectly describes the parish of BARLOW.

The name means raised pasture-land and is of Norse and Anglo-Saxon origin. Viking influences are also evident with many road names suffixed by gate, the old Norse word for way.
It is well known for a regular farmers and artisan market held in the main village on various dates throughout the year although no markets have been held since December 2019 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The markets are normally situated either at the Angel Inn pub or just next door at St. Swithin's Church Hall.
The parish includes a number of farming hamlets such as Millthorpe situated in the Cordwell Valley and has a number of narrow, tight, often windy lanes both within the main village and within the smaller hamlets, most of which are unsuitable for HGVs
Robert Murray Gilchrist, author of regional interest books about the Peak District, lived and died at Cartledge Hall and is buried in the parish churchyard. G.H.B. Ward, activist for ramblers' rights and co-founder of the Clarion Ramblers in Sheffield, was a Labour Party politician who lived at Owler Bar, a very important area here, at least traffic wise, out to the West

Dronfield, Derbyshire UK Time: 18:00 - 7.40pm 16.6.16 - A Powerful Thunderstorm last night spanning Sheffield to Chesterfield UK began to mature & rotate (a Supercell). Producing 2 mesocyclones 1 large cloud base Funnel no more that 100ft away from the 1st meso! after this meso became detached! 2nd meso quickly formed to the NE (behind us) producing several funnels, 1 very close to contact viewed from my location. Simply Stunning to see this in the UK.

Cutting across the west midlands from the Shropshire market town of Bridgenorth, this route is quite congested at times due to the larger population of this part of the wesdt midlands.
