Leeuwarden is the capital city of the province. Its history began in the 15th century, thanks to the large Middelse River, it then became an important European trading center. However, in less than a century it dried up, bringing the city into decline. Since then, Leeuwarden has not stood out among other agricultural cities in the country. After the removal of the occupation of the German troops, the city gradually recovered, now it is methodically developing. Now, many Dutch and other Europeans come to the annual Domino Day to see world records in dominoes.
Drachten is an old small town in the province. However, it cannot be called a province, it is famous for its industry. Throughout Europe, he is also famous for his road experiment. At the beginning of the 21st century, the city authorities abandoned traffic lights and some signs in the city center. What to see
Above the docks of Harlingen rises the old lighthouse, already decommissioned. He illuminated the coast for 80 years. Tourists are attracted not only by its Art Deco features, but also by the hotel now located inside, with a panoramic observation deck.
There are several settlements in the Netherlands with no more than 1000 inhabitants. Despite this, they received the status of a city. Among them, Sloten, an old town, is of particular interest. On its territory there are several historical buildings, for example, a windmill dating back to the 18th century. A well-preserved belt of canals also flows through it.
On the northern coast of the province, you can enjoy seascapes on the shores of the Wadden Sea. It is especially interesting to go to one of the inhabited islands located near the coast.
In the city of Franeker, the Eise Eising Planetarium deserves attention. In the operating greenhouse, located on top of a building in the city center, the movement of the celestial bodies of the solar system is reproduced. Its creation dates back to the end of the 18th century.
Attractions
The Casematten Museum will attract lovers of military history. The Afsluitdijk Dam was built to control the water level in the country. It was later improved with modern equipment and forts. Some of them became the basis for the museum.
There are a decent number of architectural monuments in the capital: the building of the former office, the leaning tower of Oldekhove and the Chamber of Weights. Lovers of holy places will be attracted by the church of St. Boniface.
In Leeuwarden, the building of the Central Pharmacy stands out among the medieval and renaissance buildings. It was built in the heyday of Art Nouveau, and a portrait of Hygena, the Greek goddess of medicine, became its decoration.

In this video you can drive along on the N31 expressway from Leeuwarden (capital of Friesland) to Drachten. The N31 is a busy 2x2 expressway connecting the 2 largest cities of the Friesland province.
Beyond Leeuwarden the N31 turns into the A31 continuing to Harlingen on the Waddensea. At Drachten the N31 converts into the N381, which was recently upgraded to a 2x2 expressway until the town of Oosterwolde. The N381 connects Drachten to the city of Emmen in the East.

Friesland – Urlaub im Norden der Niederlande | ARD Reisen
Daniel Aßmann erkundet die Region Friesland, die als die schönste und eigenwilligste der zwölf niederländischen Provinzen gilt. Bei einem Urlaub im Norden von Holland gibt es viel zu entdecken, denn die stolzen Friesen haben eine eigene Sprache, eigene Brauchtümer und Traditionen. Berühmt ist die älteste Pferderasse Europas, eher unbekannt das Pulsstockspringen, und bei Touristen beliebt sind handgefertigte Klompen oder Keramiken. Mit einer Solex, einem in Friesland beliebten Moped, erkundet Daniel Aßmann die Region.
Friesisch gilt hier als Amtssprache, die neben Niederländisch gesprochen wird. Die Geschichte der Provinz (Hauptstadt Leeuwarden) lässt sich bis in die Jahre zwischen 400 und 200 vor Christus zurückverfolgen. Im 15. Jahrhundert war die Provinz für kurze Zeit sogar unabhängig.
Weil Friesland mit Ijsselmeer, unzähligen Wasserstraßen und vielen kleineren Seen ein einziges Wassersportparadies ist, steigt Daniel Aßmann im Nationalpark de Alde Feanen in ein Skûtsje, ein friesisches Plattbodenschiff. In Leeuwarden besucht er ein ehemaliges Gefängnis, das heute Kultur- und Begegnungszentrum ist. Im Dark Sky Park Lauwersmeer wird er zum Sternegucker.

Driving in the Netherlands: Rijksweg A7 E22 from Drachten to Groningen
In this video you can drive along on A7 E22 from Drachten to Groningen and a short part of the N7 Ring of Groningen. The A7 E22 is a motorway that runs from Amsterdam in the West to the border with Germany in the Northeast. After Amsterdam, Groningen is the 2nd largest city on the highway.
We start in the province of Friesland near the city of Drachten. Although city is not entirely correct. Drachten is the 2nd largest 'city' of the province after its capital Leeuwarden and has over 60.000 inhabitants. However, it officially does not have city rights and is theoretically a 'town' or 'village'. The same goes for Heerenveen, the 3rd largest 'city' of Friesland.
In fact, Drachten is one of the biggest places in the Netherlands without a train station or rail connection. It's been planned for decades to build a new train connection between the West and Groningen in the North alongside the A7, but they are yet to break ground on the project. Groningen is of course connected to the rest of the country by rail, although the trajectory goes via the East (Assen - Zwolle) and there is a non-electrified connection to Leeuwarden in the West.
Either way this shows the significance of this motorway and it can get quite busy at peak hours in certain places. Groningen (200.000 pop.) was and still is a notorious bottleneck on the A7, as it's routed straight through the city (numbered as N7). It's almost impossible to expand and widen the urban expressway due to space constraints but as you can see in the video, there is quite a bit of construction going on.
A couple of years ago they started on a complete overhaul of the roads (RING) around Groningen, recognizing the need for an obstacle-free traffic flow for through-traffic. In the past, there used to be a classic junction with traffic lights at Julianaplein (A7 x A28). Now at the time of its re-construction, traffic lights are still being used but in the future this should be a free-flow intersection without traffic lights.
In a further effort, the N7 through the city will be 'sunk' and I believe partly in a tunnel. It will also we widened to 2x3 across the trajectory through the city. Additionally further roads around the city will be upgraded or have been upgraded already, (e.g. the N46) and a couple of bridges will undergo renovation works as well.
