Hard To Pronounce Michigan Places | Pure Michigan

Have you ever wondered how Michigan was named Michigan? Before colonization, the now Great Lakes State was home to at least eight Native American tribes throughout the land, one of which being the Ojibwe Indians. The Ojibwe were the first people to openly interact with the French in Michigan, trading furs and knowledge of the area for guns and goods. Through translation, the state of Michigan was named after the Ojibwe Indian word “Michigama,” which means “great lake” or “land surrounded by water.”

With this in mind, we invite you to take a watch some Michiganders stumble their way through some uniquely-named destinations found across the Great Lakes State. Test yourself and learn the correct pronunciations here:

Things to See and Do in PETOSKEY MICHIGAN

There are many things to see and do in Petoskey, Michigan. Located along Little Traverse Bay in northern Lower Michigan, Petoskey is home to a beautiful downtown area with a lot of shops and restaurants as well as some great parks. I check out the downtown area, get some lunch at Lost Village Pierogi, go to the original Kilwin's location for some fresh ice cream hand dipped in their fresh chocolate, and visit a few parks including the Bear River Valley Recreation Area and Bayfront Park.

ORDER YOUR MANTA SLEEP MASK HERE! USE PROMO CODE ChrisH

Benton Harbor has been struggling for a long time. The city has an extremely high crime rate for a city of its size. Over half of the towns peak population has left the city, and the economic downward spiral that the city has found itself in has no signs of turning around. Is Benton Harbor, Michigan the worst small city in the United States?

Californians Try To Pronounce Michigan Towns

How do you say Ypsilanti, Hamtramck, and Mackinac Island correctly? These Michigan cities and towns can be hard to pronounce, especially if you're not from the Midwest, but it's funny to watch people try. Watch as these Californians try, and fail, to pronounce some of our best Michigan city names.

MAP OF MICHIGAN

hello my friends. this is a map of beautiful michigan. Michigan consists of two peninsulas separated by the Straits of Mackinac. The 45th parallel north runs through the state, marked by highway signs and the Polar-Equator Trail—along a line including Mission Point Light near Traverse City, the towns of Gaylord and Alpena in the Lower Peninsula and Menominee in the Upper Peninsula. With the exception of two tiny areas drained by the Mississippi River by way of the Wisconsin River in the Upper Peninsula and by way of the Kankakee-Illinois River in the Lower Peninsula, Michigan is drained by the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence watershed and is the only state with the majority of its land thus drained. No point in the state is more than six miles from a natural water source or more than 85 miles from a Great Lakes shoreline. why do you love mIchigan so much? please comment. continuing..

The Great Lakes that border Michigan from east to west are Lake Erie, Lake Huron, Lake Michigan and Lake Superior. The state is bounded on the south by the states of Ohio and Indiana, sharing land and water boundaries with both. Michigan's western boundaries are almost entirely water boundaries, from south to north, with Illinois and Wisconsin in Lake Michigan; then a land boundary with Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula, that is principally demarcated by the Menominee and Montreal Rivers; then water boundaries again, in Lake Superior, with Wisconsin and Minnesota to the west, capped around by the Canadian province of Ontario to the north and east.

The heavily forested Upper Peninsula is relatively mountainous in the west. The Porcupine Mountains, which are part of one of the oldest mountain chains in the world, rise to an altitude of almost 2,000 feet above sea level and form the watershed between the streams flowing into Lake Superior and Lake Michigan. The surface on either side of this range is rugged. The state's highest point, in the Huron Mountains northwest of Marquette, is Mount Arvon at 1,979 feet. The peninsula is as large as Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island combined but has fewer than 330,000 inhabitants. They are sometimes called Yoopers, and their speech has been heavily influenced by the numerous Scandinavian and Canadian immigrants who settled the area during the lumbering and mining boom of the late 19th century.
The Lower Peninsula is shaped like a mitten and many residents hold up a hand to depict where they are from. It is 277 miles long from north to south and 195 miles from east to west and occupies nearly two-thirds of the state's land area. The surface of the peninsula is generally level, broken by conical hills and glacial moraines usually not more than a few hundred feet tall. It is divided by a low water divides running north and south. The larger portion of the state is on the west of this and gradually slopes toward Lake Michigan. The highest point in the Lower Peninsula is either Briar Hill at 1,705 feet, or one of several points nearby in the vicinity of Cadillac. The lowest point is the surface of Lake Erie at 571 feet.

Numerous lakes and marshes mark both peninsulas, and the coast is much indented. Keweenaw Bay, Whitefish Bay, and the Big and Little Bays De Noc are the main indentations on the Upper Peninsula. The Grand and Little Traverse, Thunder, and Saginaw bays within the Lower Peninsula. thanks for listening. please subscribe for the best maps and for the love of michigan. #michigan

Port Sanilac and Harbor Beach - Coastal Towns of the Thumb

Port Sanilac and Harbor Beach are two great coastal towns of the thumb of Michigan which you need to visit. Located along the shores of Lake Huron along M-25, both villages have nice shops and restaurants as well as parks along the the shore. I first visit Port Sanilac to check out some of the history there as well as to get a great view of the town from the breakwater pier. Later in the video I head to Harbor Beach to explore the downtown area, walk out on a pier to look out at the lighthouse away from shore, and eat at Smalley's Bar.

Revisiting Niles, Michigan | City of FOUR FLAGS

Niles, Michigan is known as the City of Four Flags due to the Fort St. Joseph (commemorated by a boulder outside of town) having four different flags flying over the fort at different times: France, United Kingdom, Spain, and the United States. I last visited Niles earlier in the decade, and I return to check out the riverside park along the St. Joseph River as well as some historic sites in the city including the railroad depot and the Chapin House. Niles is especially beautiful during the springtime.

Potawatomi Falls | Falls of the Black River | Camping Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park

October 2, 2021. The second falls on the Black River Scenic byway. The falls are a short 600 feet from the parking lot, but there are a lot of stairs going down (which you have to go back up when you are done). Gorge Falls would be the third falls, but the stairs and boardwalk access to Gorge Falls was closed. About 20 feet of the boardwalk was missing. Sandstone Falls is the fourth falls, and the subject of the next video.

NILES, MICHIGAN

Join this channel to get access to perks:

Niles is a city in Berrien and Cass counties in the U.S. state of Michigan, near South Bend, Indiana. In 2010, the population was 11,600 according to the 2010 census. It is the larger, by population, of the two principal cities in the Niles-Benton Harbor Metropolitan Statistical Area, an area with 156,813 people.
Niles lies on the banks of the St. Joseph River, at the site of the French Fort St. Joseph, which was built in 1697 to protect the Jesuit Mission established in 1691. After 1761, it was held by the British and was captured on May 25, 1763, by Native Americans during Pontiac's Rebellion. The British retook the fort but it was not re-garrisoned and served as a trading post. During the American Revolutionary War, the fort was held for a short time by a Spanish force. The occupation of the fort by the four nations of France, Britain, Spain, and the United States has earned Niles the nickname City of Four Flags.

Southwest Michigan Breweries-Destination Brews! Travel Tips & Brewery Experience #beer #craftbeer

Every Memorial Day Weekend for the past two years we've made a trek out to the lovely shores of Southwest Michigan. Don't ask us why. It was kind of a spur-of-the-moment thing that spawned out of the pandemic. We were desperate to travel. We craved to go to some place new. What we stumbled upon was a place full of greenery, a cool lake breeze, and a multitude of establishments with tasty beverages. Seriously. Southwest Michigan is loaded with breweries, wineries, even a distillery, and all are worth checking out.

So we made a little video with a few of our favorites. Of course, we couldn't fit all our favorite spots into a single video. That'd be overindulgent and egregious. But you can bet your sexy selves there will be a part two to this video at a similar time next year. Cheers!
