Donauwörth - one of the attractions of the Romantic Road, originated in the 10th century from the fishing village of Wörth on the island of the Wörnitz River at its confluence with the Danube. The favorable location on the trade route from Augsburg to Nuremberg and the construction of a bridge over the Danube contributed to the rapid growth and development of the city. In 1301 it received the status of a Free Imperial City and became an important trading hub. The Thirty Years' War had a devastating effect throughout Germany, cities and villages fell into decay. Donauwörth did not escape the sad fate, which lost the privileges of the Free City and went to Bavaria. During the Second World War, the city was badly damaged, it would have been destroyed by 75%, but beautiful medieval streets, half-timbered houses and the Old Town Hall have been preserved, which since 1236 has never been destroyed. Reichsstraße is very picturesque and is the basis of the historical part of the city. Previously, it was part of the trade route - now a place of pilgrimage for tourists, because this street is considered one of the most beautiful in southern Germany.

Romantic Road, Germany - Travel Video
Founded in 1950 as a tourist project, the Romantic Road is a 460km route through charming German villages. It runs from Würzburg to Füssen.
What's cool about it? It takes you on a journey through a wealth of history, art, cuisine, and Western culture - while the landscape changes along the way from north to south.
As you travel the 29 cities along the route, I can assure you: it is impossible not to fall in love and be fascinated by the almost time travel.
There are other impressive routes in Germany - it is true - such as the Fairytale Route and the Lake District Route. But the Romantic Route is the oldest and most popular (or still the most loved) of them all.
Here's a curiosity: do you know why the Romantic Route has this name?
Because many German romantic poets of the 18th and 19th centuries found their inspiration in the little towns on the route. Not only them, in fact: Walt Disney was also inspired there. Neuschwanstein Castle on the outskirts of Füssen is the starting point for Cinderella's Castle - and the town Rothenburg, in turn, inspired him in the creation of Pinocchio.
The route begins in Wüzrburg and ends in the Bavarian* town of Füssen.About 30 cities make up the Romantic Route in Germany.
The ones that receive the most praise and that we recommend you visit are: Füssen and Schwangau, Halblech, Steingarden, Landsberg Am Lech, Ausburg, Donauwörth, Nordingen, Dinkelsbühl, Rothenburgh o.d.T and Wüzrburg.A little off the beaten track are Heidelberg, Nuremberg and Zuspitze.I love the option of doing roadtrips with the freedom of a rental car. Das Fischerstechen ist ein den mittelalterlichen Lanzenturnieren nachgebildetes „Wasserturnier“. Das „Turnier des kleinen Mannes“ ist seit 1737 in Donauwörth urkundlich nachgewiesen.
Nachdem es zunächst in Vergessenheit geraten war, wurde es 1985 von den Fischerstechern wieder zu neuem Leben erweckt und findet anlässlich des Inselfestes auf der Altstadtinsel Ried auf der Wörnitz statt.

Donauwörth is a small town located in Bavaria. It is picturesquely situated on the top of a hill at the confluence of the Danube (Donau) and Wörtnitz riveres. You enter the old town through and old gated bridge, the Rieder Tor. The old town consist mainly of just one street with historic buildings, the Reichsstrasse. At one end of the street is the Town Hall (Rathaus) and at the other the Church of Our Lady ( Liebfrauenmünster ), in gothic style from the 15th century. Further on the Reichsstrasse continues on the Heiligkreuzstrasse (Holy Cross street), where you can find the baroque Heiligkeuz monastery and church. The church, built at the beginning of the 18th century is decorated with frescoes and altars.
