Brittany, the rugged west of France with picturesque old towns, castles and fortresses and the surf of the Atlantic that constantly laps against its rocky coastline. Its ancient name of Armorika meaning “The land of the sea ” underlines the historical significance of the ocean for those who live in this part of the world.English troops besieged Vitré for many years until the lords of the castle finally paid a high ransom for their freedom. The besieging army thus withdrew. The well fortified town subsequently enjoyed much prosperity and has remained in tact right up until the present day. Le Mont Saint-Michel with its historic buildings and eighty metre high granite mound is like something from a fairy tale. Powerful fortifications surround the small town and the abbey on top of the rock and due to its unique location and architectural splendour this picturesque village is often referred to as the Wonder Of The Occident. Saint Malo is the proud and solemn “Town Of The Corsairs”. Today’s yacht harbour once contained pirate ships that were used to attack unsuspecting merchant ships laden with rich cargo. This old pirate citadel located on the Emerald Coast is built from granite and looks as though it is an integral part of the rock. Dinan is a small and enchanting French town on the banks of the Rance is one of the most beautiful and well preserved mediaeval towns in Brittany. Today, cobbled lanes and several half-timbered buildings highlight the town’s colourful history. Brest was once the most important military harbour and submarine base in France but during the Second World War it was constantly bombed and more than half of it was destroyed. Its rebuilding programme introduced a number of new attractions such as the Océanopolis, a super-modern sea park that features a large number of animals and plants. The western part of France has many faces. The Romans once called it, “The end of the world”. A land of myths, castles, fishing villages and picturesque old towns. Last June, we crossed the Channel by ferry to Saint-Malo. For this first visit to Brittany, we were based in the Dol-de-Bretagne region, halfway between Saint-Malo and Mont-Saint-Michel.
Just 30 km away was one of Brittany's most beautiful cities: Dinan! A visit to the historic town was a must. On a beautiful sunny day, we choose to explore Dinan and its landmarks.

Places to see in ( Saint Malo - France )
Saint-Malo is a port city in Brittany, in France's northwest. Tall granite walls surround the old town, which was once a stronghold for privateers (pirates approved by the king). The Saint-Malo Cathedral, in the center of the old town, is built in Romanesque and Gothic styles and features stained-glass windows depicting city history. Nearby is La Demeure de Corsaire, an 18th-century privateer’s house and museum.
Walking through the cobbled streets of St Malo’s old town feels like you’ve stepped back in time. This popular tourist destination and busy ferry port offers visitors an authentic glimpse into Brittany’s important seafaring past. Once the feared base of pirates (corsairs), heavily fortified against Norman (or English) attack, today's Saint-Malo is one of the top tourist draws in Brittany. The star of the show is the atmospheric walled city (intramuros), largely destroyed in the Second World War but painstakingly reconstructed. The modern towns of Parame and Saint-Servan lie outside the walls. It is also the birth place of renowned French explorer Jacques Cartier who is famous for exploring Quebec.
Saint-Malo has a good bus system, with the main terminals located at the train station and just outside the walls(St Vincent). Get a booklet with maps and times from any bus driver. A one and a half hour ticket costs €1.15. Unfortunately there are no bus services late in the evening. The walled city is easily covered on foot, but you can also opt for a dinky Tourist Train that takes you and your wallet for a ride (€5.50).

Dressé sur son éperon de schiste, le château de Fougères, vaste ensemble défensif édifié entre le 12e et le 15e siècle, vous intimidera sans doute. Flanqué de 13 tours, le tout recouvrant une surface de 2 hectares, ses fortifications, autrefois entourées d’eau, ont été entièrement restaurées et valent assurément la visite. Empruntez le chemin de ronde, il offre un joli panorama sur les remparts et les jardins de la ville.
Ville forteresse de plus de mille ans. Une impressionnante silhouette de granit qui domine la ville… Dès votre arrivée à Fougères, le ton est donné.
