GEORGIA COAST: the BEST road trip to ST. SIMONS ISLAND, DARIEN & ST. MARYS
Join a road trip to some of the best places to visit on Gerogia's coast: the cute town Darien, scenic St Simons island and St Marys with its long history and stunning nature.
Traveling is of course about the journey. But there is something special about the feeling, when you get close to your destination. I was reaching the east coast - and I could not have picked a better spot than Georgia. Leave behind the rush of the highway and join my ride to the coast of Georgia.
Here are my must-visits when plannig a road trip to coastal Georgia:
- Visit the town Darien. Darien in Georgia was founded in 1736 and is the second oldest town in the state. Its history, culture, and beautiful marshland views make Darien an highly frequented weekend destination.
- No trip to Darien is complete without a stop at the Fort King George Historic Site. In the 1700s, the British, French, and Spanish all contested for Georgia land, and once the British claimed the land they had to defend it from all sides. That’s why Fort King George was built. The fort you can visit today is is the full reconstruction of the old wood buildings of the 18th century British fort, in its most probable location, based on archaeological exploration and the written records left.
- a Must-Visit when traveling the coast of Gerogia is St. Simons Island. St Simons Island was voted the number one favorite beach town by Travel and Leisure. It is the perfect mix of seaside idyll and small town charm.
St. Simons is located on the southeast corner of Georgia, about equal distance from the two next big cities Savannah and Jacksonville, making this barrier island community an ideal destination for a quick getaway. The Pier of St. Simons is nearly always crowded with fishermen - and one of the best things to do in St Simons is just watching them getting their catches.
- Stop in St. Marys at the border to the state of Florida. St. Marys calls itself the Gateway to the Georgia Coast.
Settled in the 16th century as a part of Spanish Florida, St. Marys became a part of Georgia in 1763.
- St Marys is most famous for its ferry terminal to the Cumberland Island. Unfortunately I was too late to still catch a ferry, but Cumberland Island is declared a national seashore and supposed to be an outstanding nature experience with untouched beaches and wild horses. Definitly add this to your bucket list when visiting the area!
- Stay a night at the historic Spencer House Inn Bed&Breakfast. The hotel was built in 1872 and has 14 guest rooms, each individually decorated.

Visiting a Subscriber in OURAY, CO (Switzerland of America) | Moochdocking + Cascade Falls | RVing
We spent two wonderful days exploring the beauty of Ouray, Colorado. One of our wonderful subscribers graciously invited us to moochdock in their driveway for two nights. We learned the history of Ouray, CO, hiked some great trails and experienced Cascade Waterfall.
It was a privilege and an honor to spend this time with one of our subscribers.

Welland Canal Day Trip | Lock System
A day trip to Welland Canal, starting at lock #8 to lock #1
The canal allows goods from the Great Lakes ports such as Cleveland, Detroit, Milwaukee, and Chicago, as well as other heavily industrialized areas of the United States and Ontario Canada, to be shipped to the port of Montreal or to Quebec City, where they are usually reloaded onto ocean-going vessels for international shipping.
We did notice on this trip the lack of international vessels, all were from North America. Its usually the reverse. Our supply chain struggles are truly noted with this day trip!

The Port of Bristol comprises the commercial, and former commercial, docks situated in and near the city of Bristol in England. The Port of Bristol Authority was the commercial title of the Bristol City, Avonmouth, Portishead and Royal Portbury Docks when they were operated by Bristol City Council, which ceased trade when the Avonmouth and Royal Portbury Docks were leased to The Bristol Port Company in 1991.
The Port of Bristol grew up on the banks of the Rivers Avon and Frome, at their confluence upstream of the Avon Gorge which connects the city with the Bristol Channel. This part of the port was known as the Bristol City Docks, and is now more usually known as Bristol Harbour.
Bristol Harbour is the harbour in the city of Bristol, England. The harbour covers an area of 70 acres (28.3 ha). It has existed since the 13th century but was developed into its current form in the early 19th century by installing lock gates on a tidal stretch of the River Avon in the centre of the city and providing a tidal by-pass for the river. It is often called the Floating Harbour as the water level remains constant and it is not affected by the state of the tide on the river.
Netham Lock in east Bristol is the upstream limit of the harbour. Beyond the lock is a junction: on one arm the navigable River Avon continues upstream to Bath, and on the other arm is the tidal River Avon.
