Dinan is a GREAT French town to visit. There is more to France than Paris.
Dinan is a walled city, also known as a rampart, in the north of Brittany that has so many beautiful features, it is hard to name them. So many classic cobblestone streets with great shops and restaurants. The port is adorable as are the neighboring towns. I would put Dinan as one of France’s most beautiful places. Sure, the French Riviera is lovely, but there are literally thousands of other vacation spots in France that are stunning and inviting. Make Dinan one of your Top 10 places to visit.

Places to see in ( Dinan - France ) Centre Historique
Built on a hill overlooking the Rance Valley, Dinan is located in Upper Brittany, in the department of Côtes-d'Armor. This medieval Town of Art and History, surrounded by tall ramparts that run for three kilometres, dates back to the Celtic era, but the monks settled on the banks of the Rance in the 9th century. The town developed in the 11th century around a priory. Having become a ducal town in the late 13th century, Dinan benefited from this new status as it developed.
In Dinan, time seems to have stood still. The picturesque cobbled streets, whose restaurants and pancake houses sometimes feature medieval decorations, invite long walks. There are pretty shops and emblematic monuments to see. The small harbour is the starting point for boat excursions on the Rance.Various hikes and water sports activities are available on the banks of the river. There is also the House of the Rance, a museum about the valley that offers many activities including walks, bike rides and boat trips.
After a walk around the harbour, where trade developed in the Middle Ages, head to the picturesque cobbled street of Le Jerzual, an old, steep path that connects the harbour with the medieval town. This charming street lined with half-timbered houses and many art and craft shops used to be the street where weavers and tanners lived. Nowadays they have been replaced by wood-gilders and glass-blowers.
Dinan is a medieval city with old antique walls that welcomes every two years his party Remparts in July. The old town is completely restored, and there are many shops timbered houses reminiscent of old crafts (glass blower, period furniture woodworkers, weavers, pottery...). You find them in the pedestrian street of Jerzual, and there, down this street you will arrive at the port of Dinan, the ride is beautiful. You can also make a mini cruise on the river Rance to the village of Léhon upstream, whose visit is essential, and to the lock of Yvet downstream to sample mussels and chips
Built in the 14th century, Dinan Castle is now a museum with art and history collections. It consists of three parts: the Guichet Gate, the keep and the Coëtquen Tower. The unusual 12th-century Basilica of St. Saviour was never completed. This religious monument combines Byzantine, Persian and Romanesque influences, and contains the heart of Bertrand Du Guesclin. For a lovely view of the town and the Rance, head to the Clock Tower: standing 46 metres tall, this 15th-century edifice is open from April to September and is the highest point in the town.

Today, cobbled lanes and several half-timbered buildings highlight the town’s colourful history and in 1066 many of Dinan´s inhabitants took part in the Norman Conquest and the Hundred Years´ War also left its traces here. However, despite its battles and sieges the picturesque old town has survived to the present day and has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in Brittany. The town´s defences were constructed in the 14th century. A circular wall, two and a half kilometres long, protected the inhabitants of Dinan from hostile attack. Due to its well planned defences the town remained untouched and even today it’s like stepping back into the Middle Ages.

Dinan, the Most Beautiful Town in Brittany? – Seas the Day (Ep31)
It's been argued for a long time that Dinan is the most beautiful town in the whole of Brittany. We thought we should go and have a look ourselves and make our own minds up. Beautiful, yes but the most beautiful, we're not sure, but we did have a lovely time.
If you’ve seen our previous videos, you’ll see we tried visit Dinan towards Christmas to have a look at their spectacular Christmas market, but we didn’t get there. We are happy we waited as there is so much to see and lots of history to explore.
Join us on our journey as we check out the ramparts, château, belfry, churches, very steep roads and beautiful cobbled streets lined with half-timbered houses. This was a wonderful place to go and there’s something new to see around every corner and down every alleyway.

Today's Video: Dinan, the medieval village that has it all. I call it the trifecta. Think of Saint-Malo and its neighbor Dinard as the two points of the bottom triangle. And the ???? ? Dinan.
With its remarkable history and gorgeous intramuros, perched right on the ocean, Saint-Malo attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists each year. A train from Paris delivers visitors into the heart of the Brittany coastline. From there, many bounce off to the infamous Mont-Saint-Michel.
A simple foot ferry across the bay takes you Dinard. I am in love with this idyllic town, its movie-set villas, and 1920's cinema vibes. They call it the Cannes of the North, and Dinard hosts an annual film festival. There's even a statue of Alfred Hitchcock, surrounded by seagulls, right on the beach promenade. The blue and white striped cabanas sit merrily on the sand in the summer. Just about two blocks away is the Les Halles, with over 300 vendors on Saturday morning.
But today, we talk about Dinan. While the region has been inhabited since Neolithic times, this medieval village was first established as a Benedictine convent. In 1064, the Normans of Duke William the Bastard besieged the castle on a motte. This assault appears on the Bayeux Tapestry. But why do I claim that Dinan is the medieval village that has it all?
Here are just a few of my top reasons: Proximity to the beach (30 minutes), picture-perfect half-timbered homes, it has remparts, a chateau, gorgeous churches, medieval events, a clock tower with an XV century belfry, an English garden, an annual medieval festival, an international Celtic harp event, art festivals - PLUS, the village sits on a port!

TRAVEL FRANCE: Brittany Highlights
Join us on our trip to France where we finish our time in Normandy and travel to the neighbouring region of Brittany where we check out some of the major highlights!
In Episode 3 of our Eurotrip 2020 series, we feature highlights of our trip around Brittany, France including the city of St. Malo, the beautiful Mont St. Michel, trying the famous Cancale oysters, and heading to the beautiful city of Dinan.
We hope you enjoy some of our favourite memories on this segment of our trip including sunset drinks in St. Malo, walking around the island of Mont St. Michel (both inside and outside), and exploring one of our favourite cities in France, Dinan (we really do love those half-timbered houses!).
