New Mexico is a constituent state of the United States of America. It became the 47th state of the union in 1912. New Mexico ranks fifth among the 50 United State states in terms of total area and is bounded by Colorado to the north, Oklahoma and Texas to the east.
New Mexico has some of the flattest land as well as some of the most rugged mountains in the country and it was described as The Land of Enchantment. The highest mountain peaks, Wheeler Peak and Truchas Peak are in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in the north-central part of the state. Rockhound State Park | Deming New Mexico
This weekend we headed 4+ hours south of Albuquerque to a state park and area new to us. Rockhound is just south of Deming next to the Florida Mountains. Weather was fantastic on Friday when we arrived but by Saturday afternoon it was windy and turning colder as a front moved in. We got in some rockhounding on the Thunder Egg Trail, as well as hiking in Spring Canyon on the Lover's Leap trail. Great campground and excellent host. We will return!
This is a VERY popular campground and reservations are necessary to get a spot. Most of the people there that weekend were from out of state - several from Washington, Iowa, Idaho, S Dakota, and a few from other states. We were surprised how many came from up north. The camphost and his wife are from Montana and very nice. Do go to the Visitor Center your first day there to learn about the rocks and what to look for if rockhouding in the area. Visitors are allowed 4-5 rocks per person so don't expect to fill up a truckload with you. Regardless, it is fun to look.

Deming is a city in Luna County, New Mexico, United States, 60 miles west of Las Cruces and 35 miles north of the Mexican border. The population was 14,855 as of the 2010 census. Deming is the county seat and principal community of Luna County.

Road Trip! Explore Deming Luna Mimbres Museum and Rockhound State Park
Join me as I Sally Forth from Lake Holloman near White Sands to Deming, New Mexico! I started my journey early in the morning, taking in the stunning views of the White Sands National Monument as I hit the road.
My first stop was in Las Cruces, where I took a quick break to do some laundry before continuing on my journey. Las Cruces is a charming town with a rich history, and it was a nice place to take a break and rest before the rest of the drive.
From Las Cruces, I headed towards Deming, where I made a stop at the Deming Luna Mimbres Museum. This museum is a must-see for anyone interested in the history and culture of the area, and it was a great way to learn more about the region as I drove through.
After my visit to the museum, I headed to my final destination for the day: Rockhound State Park. This beautiful park is known for its rocky terrain and stunning views, and it's also a great place for rockhounding. Although I didn't have any luck finding any rocks on this trip, it was still a beautiful place to camp for the night.
All in all, it was a great day of driving and sightseeing, and I can't wait to explore more of this beautiful region in the future. Thank you for joining me on my road trip from White Sands to Deming, and I hope you enjoyed the journey with me.

We are eastbound on Interstate 10, finally leaving Arizona. Of course, we couldn't pass up Rockhound State Park in Deming, New Mexico. Here you can take rocks home with you. Besides that, though, this is a very scenic park situated on the at the foot of the Little Florida Mountains. You can see the town of Deming off in the distance, watch the most amazing sunsets, and hike some really pretty trails. Sites provide electric and water. All sites except one are 30 amp. There is a primitive tent area.
*You cannot take rocks from Spring Canyon.
What we love about Rockhound State Park:
1. Our site, Site 27, had the most amazing views. Truthfully, all the sites had great views.
2. Sites are large with covered picnic tables. Some had brush between them.
3. Scenic mountains, views, sunsets
4. Hiking trails - Two trails are in the campground and two are at Spring Canyon. You don't have to hike the entire trail to see some pretty amazing views.
5. Close to Deming if you need anything.
6. Peaceful
7. Verizon worked OK
8. You can collect rocks here!
9. Very reasonably priced sites
What we didn't love about Rockhound State Park:
1. Bathroom was not heated and water was tepid.
2. There is only one 50 amp site that we saw, Site 6. All other sites are 30 amp. No problem for us we just watch what we use.
