Foreigner Explores Sumatra's Big City ????????
Everyone told me to be careful in Medan. Watch out! the said. Well there wasn't much to watch out for except friendly, smiling locals who wanted to chat and take selfies with me.
The guidebooks all tell you to skip Medan. There's nothing worth seeing there. It's only worth staying overnight if you have arrive late at night.. A city is always very interesting to me though. Okay it doesn't have a Disneyland or ruins of ancient buildings, but I like to see how ordinary people are going about their daily lives more than visiting tourist traps anyway.
I started off with a visit to Centre Point mall, finally getting a SIM card. With that I was able to use the GoJek app and no longer have to negotiate with the Becaks (Indonesian motorcycle rickshaws). It's also handy being able to pull up Google Maps when you're exploring by foot.
At the mall there's a street food food court where you can enjoy authentic Indonesia hawker food in air conditioned comfort (and pay much more for the privilege, but it's still cheap.)
I walked from the mall to Lapangan Merdeka, a big city park where I watched the local kids train to dance in a BTS style and read a poem about Indonesia's independence struggle. That's what I mean when I said you don't need to find massive popular tourist attractions to find something interesting in a city.
From there I walked to the mansion of Tjong A Fie, who was the richest man in Medan a century ago. His family still own the building but most of it has been turned into a museum, which, as museums go was very interesting. It helps a lot that a tour guide is assigned to you for free when you buy the (cheap) ticket.
I ended my afternoon exploration of Medan with a visit to a royal palace known as Istana Maimum. There you can hire traditional Malay clothes to wear for only 20,000 Rupiahs while you explore the palace. I was very sweaty by that point because of the insane humidity and walking around all day, but I still put the costume on and tried not to pass out from the heat.

Exploring Medan: First Day in SUMATRA????????Indonesia Travel Vlog, Maimun Palace, Raya Mosque, Spicy Food
We're finally in Medan, aka Gotham City, Sumatra!!! In today's Indonesia Travel Vlog we take you on a walking tour all around Medan city - the capital of North Sumatra. We start the day walking from our hotel about 20 minutes to the Maimun Palace in Medan. When we arrived at the palace it was so busy!! We had to pay 10,000 Rp to enter the palace.....and then we decided to dress up! There were so many people wearing traditional royal costumes to take pictures in the palace, so we joined in too! It was 90,000 Rp each to rent the costumes. We got to choose which color we wanted (she said yellow and green are traditional, but the black is the most popular). Luckily they put the costumes on for us otherwise we would have no idea what we were doing! Carles's costume came complete with a sword while Natalie had a fan. After we were dressed we started taking pictures in and around Maimoon Palace and ended up taking soooo many pictures with everyone else who was visiting! ???? After taking lots of pictures, we decided to leave the palace and walk 2 minutes to the Grand Mosque of Medan (Masjid Raya Al-Mashun). The outside of this mosque is GORGEOUS! We were initially planning on trying to go inside of the mosque, but it was getting ready to pour rain and we needed to find clothes to wear so we decided to run away and find shelter! We crossed over the road to an interesting little mall which inititally we were hoping had food, but instead it had an amusement park in the mall as well as a (free?) gym?!? It was by far the strangest mall we went to in Medan! As they did not have any food options, we decided to run across the road again, in the rain, to an Indonesian food court area. There we were able to order Nasi Ayam and Mie Goreng which were SPICY!!!! But at least we avoided the rain. Once the rain stopped we checked out the Sri Deli Park to take pictures with the cute Medan sign! From there we continued walking through the streets of Medan to see the famous water tower - Tirtanadi Tower! It was built in 1908 by Dutch engineers who used strong steel pipes which have kept it standing until today! Apparently it still has pipes that supply water to all of Medan until today! Right next to the water tower is Jalan Selat Panjang - a popular place in Medan to eat street food (however it wasn't very busy when we were there, probably because we were early and it was raining a lot). We walked to Tjong A Fie Mansion - a historical mansion build in 1895 which has been turned into a museum. It was a great place to tour! After all the walking we needed a coffee stop which luckily led us to the coolest building in Medan (the black & white building that we know nothing about)! After coffee, we walked by the Medan City Hall to the post office (Pos Bloc Medan). The Post Office is another historical building turned into a little museum. It was a great and very busy day exploring all over the city of Medan!!!!

Ari menegaskan, tidak ada boleh ada bangunan di se badan minimal 10 meter dari badan sungai, karena kita tahu bahwa Sungai sebagai sumber air merupakan salah satu sumber daya alam yang mempunyai fungsi serbaguna bagi kehidupan dan penghidupan
manusia.
Sebenarnya, lanjut Ari, sungai harus dilindungi dan dijaga kelestariannya, ditingkatkan fungsi dan kemanfaatannya, dan dikendalikan daya rusaknya terhadap lingkungan. “Nah jika ada bangunan di atas bantaran sungai, harus benar-benar di kaji jangan sampai melanggar hukum,” tegasnya.
Diberitakan sebelumnya, menurut Sembiring, salah satu warga yang ditemui di kawasan tersebut. Bangunan itu merupakan milik orang penting di Sumut yang menjadikannya sebagai rumah peristirahatan keluarga.

Indonesia is HUGE!????????Exploring Different Cultures at Taman Mini Indonesia Indah Jakarta Travel Vlog
Did you know how big Indonesia is?? Honestly i had no idea until we booked our flights here and i started to look into how to get around. With over 17,000 islands, it’s the largest archipelago in the world. It’s also the country with the 4th highest population. I was amazed to learn that Indonesia is even wider than the continental United States!
Having so many different islands makes Indonesia extremely diverse. There are so many different cultures all over the country which we wanted to learn about! Luckily we heard about Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (TMII) - a recreational park/museum in Jakarta that’s the perfect place to learn about all the different cultures we’ll be visiting in Indonesia over the next 2 months!
Unfortunately when we arrived we didnt see much information.. We decided to go straight to the cable car in hopes that we’d be able to see the layout of TMII from above. The cable car cost 50,000 Rp each (double the entrance price of 25,000 Rp each) although we think it was worth it because we could already see so much from the sky! The park is laid out like a map of Indonesia with all the different areas positioned where they would be geographically. We were able to see the different styles of houses from Sumatra, Java, Sulawesi, and many other places which we will soon be visiting! We also saw so many other interesting traditional houses and outfits from places like Borneo and Papua. It was amazing to see how all of these unique cultures make up Indonesia! Of course we had to stop by the famous TMII castle for a picture. We also didn’t realize how big the reptile section was!! It was an additional 25,000 Rp to enter, but they had so many different animals - including real Komodo Dragons! We had such an amazing time exploring Taman Mini Indonesia and now we’re even more excited to explore Indonesia for the next 2 months!!
