Places to see in ( Deganwy - UK )

Deganwy is a small town in Conwy County Borough in Wales with a population of 3,936. It lies in the Creuddyn Peninsula alongside Llandudno and Rhos-on-Sea. Historically part of Caernarfonshire, it is in a more English-speaking region of north Wales, with only 1 in 4 residents speaking Welsh as a first language. It is located south of Llandudno and to the east of Conwy, which is on the opposite side of the River Conwy, and with which it forms the Conwy community.

Indeed, the name Deganwy has been interpreted in modern times as Din-Gonwy, which would mean Fort on the River Conwy, but the historical spellings make it impossible for this to be the actual origin of the name although mentioned in Domesday Book is the territory of the Decanae tribe. The original wooden castle was rebuilt in stone after 1210. Deganwy is in the ecclesiastical parish of Llanrhos, and has a Victorian era Gothic parish church dedicated to All Saints.

Deganwy's most notable feature is Deganwy Castle, situated 110 m above the town, which, in the 6th century was fortified as the stronghold of Maelgwn Gwynedd, king of Gwynedd. Deganwy appears to have been the capital of Gwynedd at this time, but this was later moved to Aberffraw on Anglesey. The hill on which the castle was built was fortified many times over the centuries. It was the site of a Norman castle built around 1082 and occupied by Robert of Rhuddlan, and later by Llywelyn the Great and Llywelyn ap Gruffudd. The castle was later demolished by Edward I when Conwy Castle was built opposite so that only ruins remain today.

Deganwy has a railway station on the Llandudno branch line with an hourly train service, available on request, to and from Manchester Piccadilly and intermediate stations. The LNWR built at Deganwy a rail connected riverside quay and wharfs, largely for the purpose of exporting slate by coastal steamer. The slate was brought by rail from Blaenau Ffestiniog. A marina with its accompanying housing and hotel accommodation was established on the site of the former slate wharfs early in the 21st century.

CONWY WALES | Full tour from Conwy Castle to Harbour and Town!

Welcome to sunny North Wales as we explore the historic town of Conwy and Conwy Castle which also features the smallest house in the UK!

We come to the amazing walled town of Conwy with the famous Conwy Castle looking down over the town, and with it's fantastic little streets and riverside. North Wales is stunning and Conwy is a fantastic place to come and explore, especially in the sunshine!

We visit Conwy on one of the hottest days of the year with blue skies, blazing sunshine and a spring in our step as we walk from Conwy Castle down to the smallest house in the UK and then up through the town walls and into the high street and castle street of Conwy Town Centre.

Tourists flock from far and wide to visit Conwy and it's easy to see why with it's town walls surrounding a medieval historic town with it's narrow streets, great shops and cafe's, the historic castle hotel and lots more.

Conwy Castle Walls are worth a visit. If you've got a head for heights, you can take a walk along the top of the wall as it loops around Conwy's cramped medieval streets.

Conwy Castle takes its place alongside Edward’s other great castles at Beaumaris, Harlech and Caernarfon as a World Heritage Site.

We also pay a visit to the National Trust's Aberconwy House. Built in the 14th century, Aberconwy House is the only surviving medieval merchant's house in Conwy. It consists of two lower floors of stone which support a half-timbered upper storey that jetties out over the street.

Conwy, previously known in English as Conway, is a walled market town and community in Conwy County Borough on the northern coast of Wales. The town, which faces Deganwy across the River Conwy, formerly lay in Gwynedd and prior to that in Caernarfonshire.

Hugging the north coast of Wales, Conwy is a compelling choice for holiday makers in UK. A closer proximity to Snowdonia National Park gives Conwy an advantage as a perfect base to explore the region – be it Snowdonia, coast, or Isle of Anglesey.

CONWY CASTLE: WELCOME TO THE MIDDLE AGES! (4K)

Conwy Castle in Conwy, Wales is one of the best preserved medieval castles in Britain. It was my #1 reason to visit Conwy. When you walk through the front gate, you walk back in time, into the Middle Ages and beyond. You can feel the history that took place here. The castle was built at the end of the 13th century by Edward I, King of England, who had conquered Wales. The castle played a key part in in both Welsh and English history, including being involved in several wars over the centuries. Throughout the video, I give you the history of Conwy Castle and added some medieval music to help get you in a medieval mood.

Visiting Conwy & Llandudno | North Wales | United kingdom Travel Guide

Join us as we visit both Conwy and Llandudno, North Wales in the United Kingdom. We arrived early into Conwy, firstly passing the stunning castle. Unfortunately the castle isn't dog friendly so we couldn't visit this time. We had a walk along the harbour, visiting the UK's smallest house before heading for some breakfast. We then drove on to Llandudno where we rode the Great Orme Tramway before a short walk on the seafront.

Places to see in ( Conwy - UK )

Conwy is a walled market town and community in Conwy County Borough on the north coast of Wales. The town, which faces Deganwy across the River Conwy, formerly lay in Gwynedd and prior to that in Caernarfonshire.

Conwy Castle and the town walls were built, on the instruction of Edward I of England, between 1283 and 1289, as part of his conquest of the principality of Wales. The church standing in Conwy has been marked as the oldest building in Conwy and has stood in the walls of Conwy since the 14th century.

Conwy was the original site of Aberconwy Abbey, founded by Llywelyn the Great. Edward and his troops took over the abbey site and moved the monks down the Conwy valley to a new site at Maenan, establishing Maenan Abbey.

Conwy has other tourist attractions that help draw visitors to the town. Conwy Suspension Bridge, designed by Thomas Telford to replace the ferry, was completed in 1826 and spans the River Conwy next to the castle.

The Conwy Railway Bridge, a Tubular bridge, was built for the Chester and Holyhead Railway by Robert Stephenson. The first tube was completed in 1848, the second in 1849. The old mountain road to Dwygyfylchi and Penmaenmawr runs through the Sychnant Pass, at the foot of Conwy Mountain.

The National Trust also owns Aberconwy House, which is Conwy's only surviving 14th-century merchant's house, one of the first buildings built inside the walls of Conwy. Another fine house open to the public is Plas Mawr, an Elizabethan house built in 1576 by the Wynn family, which has been extensively refurbished to its original 16th-century appearance and is now in the care of Cadw.

Why You SHOULD Visit Llandudno! - Seafront Tour, North Wales

Llandudno is a coastal town in North Wales. It’s known for North Shore Beach and 19th-century Llandudno Pier, with shops and a games arcade. Northwest of town, the cliffs of Great Orme headland jut into the sea. Ancient tunnels lead to a cavern at Great Orme Mines. A 1902 tramway has an upper and lower section, and travels to the headland’s summit. To the east, smaller headland Little Orme is a nature reserve. In 2022 the Great Orme Tramway will celebrate its 120th anniversary, yet each year thousands of people still take immense pleasure in travelling to the summit of the Great Orme in an original early twentieth century tramcar. Others prefer to wind their way around the headland, admiring some of the most strikingly beautiful and dramatic scenery, which is visible only from the Marine Drive. This four mile shelf was cut out of the sheer limestone cliffs in 1878 and is designed for vehicles and walkers alike. Alternatively, it is possible to catch a bus in opposte the Pier and go on an informative and visually rewarding sight-seeing tour of the Orme.
